Being told I look middle class

On a rare date night went out for a nice meal a bit fancy but it was OH birthday treat and went to a sports bar which had good music before we got the train home. I'm quite reserved and a bit uncomfortable in big settings so being in a city Center sports bar on a Saturday night was definitely out of my comfort zone, a very bubbly woman was chatting to me at the bar while we had drinks very out there but I found her really funny and we had a giggle, mid conversation she turned and said you look like you are very middle class, I just laughed in off not really knowing what she meant, I'm curious to know what she actually meant by this, just wondering if I give off a weird vibe for her to think this as I'm guessing it's not a compliment I think I took it as I am/look stuck up which is far from the truth so I would hate to give out that vibe!

She means you look a bit posh. Nothing wrong with that, but she be thinking she had assumed you would not get on but do.

Luredbyapomegranate · 18/09/2022 00:18

I think it’s just the sort of thing a bubbly bar regular says to a women who clearly isn’t. I wouldn’t give it another thought.

Top wife marks for going to city centre sports bar.

BruceHellerAlmighty · 18/09/2022 00:19

If she meant posh she'd have said posh.

Middle class means boring and a bit naff. But, sounds like she changed her mind about you.

I totally disagree. Lots of people object to being called posh, middle class is a safer word.

BadNomad · 18/09/2022 00:30

Middle class isn't posh, though. Posh is posh. Upper class.

LikeTearsInRain · 18/09/2022 00:30

Do you have a photo?

HRTQueen · 18/09/2022 00:31

If I was told that I would assume they were really thinking you look neat but frumpy

HRTQueen · 18/09/2022 00:33

Haven’t heard anyone being described as bubbly for sometime

all sounds very 80’s, can’t help thinking of Just Good Friends

BruceHellerAlmighty · 18/09/2022 00:36

Yes. This could be what it is.

Do you have a lady Diana hairdo and a blouse with tiny pearls on the collar OP?

BadNomad · 18/09/2022 00:30

Middle class isn't posh, though. Posh is posh. Upper class.

Depends who you are. To me middle class is posh.

BruceHellerAlmighty · 18/09/2022 01:21

It specifically means upper class though. You may not use it correctly but that's what it means.

antelopevalley · 18/09/2022 01:24

But that is not how it is used by loads of people who are poorer. It is not just me.

BruceHellerAlmighty · 18/09/2022 01:26

Ok. I can't help you.

mackthepony · 18/09/2022 01:30

Sports bar?

Like a wetherspoons?

funzeny · 18/09/2022 01:36

You were out of your comfort zone at the sports bar. Then suddenly have a great time with a lady very different to you, maybe more outgoing, so very natural to make assumptions as you both know your from different backgrounds. The main point is your both having a laugh and enjoying the night, everyone is from a different upbringing but making new friends, having a good time and supporting each other is what it's all about.
Saying that I can't see me meeting or socialising with anyone upper class, upper class only socialises with the upper class. So I seem to be a hypocrite

BigChesterDraws · 18/09/2022 01:52

It doesn’t matter whether she thinks you are or not. You know you’re not. That’s all that matters.

I am very working class. I don't see middle class as posh. They're just richer than me lol. Upper class is on a whole other level.

Housenoob · 18/09/2022 02:08

I can't get past 'City center sports bar'... Do you mean a pub, like a Wetherspoons? I thought 'sports bars' were mainly in the US or places like Magaluf and Benidorm. I've lived in London, Cardiff and Leeds and don't think I've ever seen a 'sports bar' except maybe Walkabout, if that still exists anywhere!

VerbenaGirl · 18/09/2022 08:30

The joy of late night chats with drunken bubbly women at bars is the unbridled nonsense they contain.

Stationsofthecross · 18/09/2022 08:33

Probably what you were wearing

Notlosinganyweight · 18/09/2022 08:37

You should have got the WKD blues and tequila shots in OP

Lizzy1980 · 18/09/2022 08:46

I don’t think the emphasis is on how it’s said, more how it’s written

HappyRhino · 18/09/2022 08:49

@Housenoob i was just wondering exactly the same thing about Walkabout bars. Do they still exist? I’m not sure I’ve seen one in years. Maybe OP is at Center Parcs and means the Sport Cafe?

OP, maybe just the fact you are calling a pub a sports bar made you seem middle class.

Lizzy1980 · 18/09/2022 08:53

Yes I agree, a lot of people don’t seem to know. I had a few dates with a fella once and he thought that he was middle class, he was far from it. I got the impression that he thought middle class meant you weren’t posh but you weren’t ‘common’ either, just sort of in the middle

Maireas · 18/09/2022 08:54

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 17/09/2022 22:29

You can't be middle class if you say 'could of.'

😂😂👍
