I have already turned the heating on

Anyone else ? How ridiculous is that ? I just got really cold today at 20-21 degrees. I need 22-23 I think.

The tip of my nose was all cold. I'm ridiculous right ? When I speak to anyone else (normal people) they seem perfectly comfortable at 20 degrees- that's warm for them.

I was wearing a jumper by the way !

yes, i did say at the time, it is so easy in the heat of august to proclaim that the heating will never go on, reality strikes and most people change their minds.

Scianel · 17/09/2022 09:10

This topic seems to occasional weirdly angry reactions.

Shoved mine on for a bit last night. Thermostat was saying nineteen and it felt chilly and miserable despite putting on a thick cardigan and sitting under a fleecy blanket.
Heated it back up to twenty and that took the edge off a bit.
It's six degrees outside where I am, autumn is definitely here.

HikingBoots · 17/09/2022 09:16

Why should they resist turning heating on if they can afford it? (Genuine question- I don't understand why you'd "resist" if you're cold and can afford it)

We can afford it, but I bitterly begrudge paying the new higher energy prices - I'd rather that money be in my savings account - so we will resist as long as possible.

saleorbouy · 17/09/2022 09:21

As with the heat in a hot country your body will acclimatise to the temperature. If you run your house slightly cooler this winter you will soon acclimatise and it will feel normal.
Explorers to the poles reduce their clothing and expose themselves to colder temperatures to maximise the benefits of the limited clothing and thermal layers they can use.

I would also urge you all to familiarise yourselves with your heating controls, and use a thermostat with timer and heat controls so you're not heating an unoccupied home.
Adjust the boiler controls to reduce the hot water and radiator temps to economic settings.
Fit TRV thermostat radiator valves on the rads so that individual room temps can be different and bedrooms temps can be reduced.
If you have a combi boiler, avoid briefly using the hot taps at sinks and basins as this will fire up the boiler every time.
If you can balance your heating system so that all the radiators heat evenly throughout the home. (There are YouTube videos for this)

bbcdefg · 17/09/2022 09:24

I will never acclimatise to a colder temp. Even in 25/26 degrees this summer I had a cardigan on.

OhFFS! · 17/09/2022 09:29

Also menopausal, so windows wide open, no duvet at night and a whinging husband because he's cold. I long for the days I feel cold. We only ever heating on late autumn, and have temp set for 16.5. But also wear oodies etc. we're on lpg and price cap not available off grid so we are super stingy

Heating in September? Don't see why people can't just wear layers or get under a duvet TBH. It's not hard.

Yesterday I was wearing a jumper and a thick wool blanket coat indoors, and using an electric blanket. I was still cold so yes I put the heating on and lit the fire.

Temperature isn't determined solely by month. In some years it's been a similar temperature on Christmas Day. Sometimes it's like this in July. There's no logic to deciding whether to put the heating on based on the month of the year when temperatures are so variable.

PepperSprayFirstApologiseLater1 · 17/09/2022 09:46

My thermostat is set to 15, so sadly no. Can't afford it.

I'm also on lpg, do you mind how much increase you have had on 47kg ? Ours is £3.75 which I was quite pleased with , expected more ?

I understand being cold, but it makes no sense to me to pay for the heating AND light a fire Confused

LouLou789 · 17/09/2022 09:56

DH was wearing jamas, a hoodie, cardigan, socks and had a hot water bottle yesterday evening. I pointed out it was 20 degrees and there’s a long way to go yet. To be fair he does take blood thinners that probably make him colder but I’m trying to encourage him that it’s because it’s suddenly cooler and within a week he will be used to it.

If I had a real fire (I don't but have had in the past) I'd set the heating lower than I can tolerate and then heat the room I'm in to comfortable level for me (with a T-shirt, top and jumper on. And thick socks. And blanket/heated throw). I do this with my electric fire. The rest of the house can be cooler because I'm not actually spending time in there (for eg I go to the kitchen to get a drink). Bedrooms can be cooler because I have a warm duvet and use an electric blanket.

Well now you can see why peoples bills/usage are so high! ( not talking those with med conditions or disability or those in the far north)

I’m not an under heater and I don’t like being cold but my 30s semi is holding its temp for now. Heating doesn’t go on generally till temps hit nearer ten degrees day time. October hopefully! It is 6 degrees and the house is 18 which doesn’t need heating.

This thread is so different to the tons we’ve seen over summer where no one is putting heating on ever, or only to18 degrees once a week, buying blankets, air fryers, oodies. It gets slightly cooler and boom the heating is on already cos it’s freezing. It’s not it’s only September.

Where in the UK are you? Because where I am, it actually was "freezing" this morning. There was a frost.

I don't understand this "it's September" mentality. The jet stream dip that has brought cold air from the Arctic doesn't know what arbitrary date it is.

7Worfs · 17/09/2022 10:08

I’ll have to start turning the heating on soon - co-sleeping with a baby so can’t use a duvet all the way up, and breastfeeding in the night so chest exposed. And my 3yo keeps kicking the duvet off in his sleep.
Young children are even more expensive now!

Ricardothesnowman · 17/09/2022 10:14

My thermostat is set to 18. It was on when I got up this morning. I don't feel cold at all. so turned ot down to 16 to keep it off for a few more weeks.

I know everyone is saying its suddenly got colder, but I haven't noticed it yet.

Ds is sitting under a blanket, but that might be because he is wearing shorts and t shirt and refusing to put anything else on, not even socks.

As another poster said, it's so that the heating can be set lower as the fire warms the main living spaces more than the rest of the house.

You are a proper wuss! My Dad would have so much to say to you. Get layers on and go for a fast walk for ten minutes to warm up. Honestly I can hear his eyes roll 2000 miles away.

Good for him. I don't know what's wrong with people, one hot summer and everyone's 'freezing' because it's become a bit cooler. Get up and move around a bit, fgs. Twenty start jumps should do it 😆

I saw guidelines for the elderly on winter heating. It said keep room at 24c if you are sitting.

Workyticket · 17/09/2022 10:29

It's cold up north but I'm resisting!

Came home from work to ds and his pal sat in the kitchen chilling with the roof windows wide open!

I've got my knock off Oodie on and I'm off to Primarni for fluffy socks or slippers this afternoon

My parents / in laws pick up ds 3 times a week between them after school and bring him back here so we'll start setting the heating for when they're here soon.

They're all 70s and I wouldn't expect them to sit in the cold in my house.

FruitPastilleNut · 17/09/2022 10:35

We're in S Wales and there was a definite nip in the air this morning...enough that you can feel the cooler air on your skin but not enough to 'feel cold' I think.

14 year old ds appeared in the living room at 7.30am proclaiming that it was freezing and asking to put the heating on...whilst wearing a pair of summer PJ shorts and no top 😂

What I've realised though is that if this was last year, I'd have stuck the heating on for an hour without a second thought. This year, I told ds to get his oodie on and he did and was fine. Similar story with other two dc...they're not cold, they just haven't yet realised they can't continue to wander around near naked like they have all summer.

LeatherBasket · 17/09/2022 10:43

Would be better to get yourself an oodie and a throw, and read a book, rather than posting such tripe on MN.

Damnautocorrect · 17/09/2022 10:48

It always takes me a while to adjust to the temperature change.
im ok(ish!) once I’m used to the heat or cold. I think I’m like a dog, need to moult or grow extra fur until I’m used to it.
our heating hasn’t been off off, but the thermostat is set at 15 and timed to only come on for an hour in the morning and hour in the evening. So for now it’s jumpers and blankets until that decides it’s cold enough.

creamwitheverything · 17/09/2022 10:53

I have had mine on the past 2 days for a few hours in the evening, I refuse to be cold.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 17/09/2022 10:54

I’m cold. I have a cold. Husband is away so I’m wearing thermals and snuggling with the dogs. Can’t afford to put the heating on though I may light the fire later.
