I have already turned the heating on

Anyone else ? How ridiculous is that ? I just got really cold today at 20-21 degrees. I need 22-23 I think.

The tip of my nose was all cold. I'm ridiculous right ? When I speak to anyone else (normal people) they seem perfectly comfortable at 20 degrees- that's warm for them.

I was wearing a jumper by the way !

We're still sleeping with the window open and I still use just a duvet cover. We are in the South West though and it's +19C today so it's been a shorts and t-shirt kind of day. It does feel a bit chilly in the evening though and definitely getting cooler now.

I don't actually know how to turn the heating on in our new house so I won't be doing that for some time. 😂

Michiru · 17/09/2022 19:49

Staffs here and have been sitting in the house with just a T-shirt and pants on.

Arms and legs are getting a bit cool, but nothing a bit of movement won't cure. Currently 13C outside.

Scianel · 17/09/2022 19:53

I'm at the North Pole and its quite toasty at -5 still so I'm in my bikini. Definitely won't be putting the heating on for a few months yet, if it drops below -20 I might put on a jumper.

Why should they resist turning heating on if they can afford it? (Genuine question- I don't understand why you'd "resist" if you're cold and can afford it)

Of course if you want to you can.

But if it’s not very cold and you turn the heating on then your body is going to get used to that heat.

Then as it gets colder you’re going to have to keep turning up the heat as you don’t feel benefits of the heating you have on.

It’s the same reason why people tell you to take your coat off when you come indoors, as you when you go back outside you won’t feel the benefits from it and you’ll feel much more cold outside, as your body has got used to the warmth of the coat.

It would be the same if you spent a holiday somewhere warm and then came back to the UK.
You’ll feel much more cold than you normally would as you get used to the temperature.

This is self-contradictory. As part of your post describes, it is large and sudden fluctuations in temperature which make temperatures seem more extreme than they are objectively. Like going outside on a cold day, or stepping off a plane in a different climate.

You then assert that having a stable temperature in a house would have the same effect, when the opposite would be the case. It would ensure the first effect is not experienced. "Getting used to" that temperature (provided it is one that is comfortable for that individual's biology) would result in feeling comfortable, not suddenly feeling colder and needing to turn heating up higher. Confused

Like a PP said, I have my heating set to the same temperature all year. When the temperature in the house goes below it, it comes on so there is a constant, stable temperature maintained. If your assertion was true I would be continually raising the temperature throughout the seasons and by now have it set at 100°C. Grin

Surely caring about energy use and the environment is a good a reason as any to delay putting on the heating?!!

Also MN is such an eye opener for me. I realise how little energy I really use compared to so many people.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 17/09/2022 21:18

I put mine on tonight for a bit too!

TheChosenTwo · 17/09/2022 21:22

Most rooms in our house (SE) are sitting around 20/21 and it’s feeling chilly to me so lit the fire this evening. Heating will probably be on in the next couple of days if it remains this sort of temperature.

🤣

Quite.

Murdoch1949 · 17/09/2022 22:31

There's no way my heating is going on until there is snow or ice outside. I'm in my 70's, living in the frozen North too. I will not be held ransom by energy companies who are riding roughshod over us. I use the minimum energy I can get away with - wear layers, use throws, have a well insulated house etc. I had my heating on for 2 days last winter, expect the same this year. I can easily afford to pay additional heating costs, I just object to it.

RainingRubies · 18/09/2022 00:42

Sounds fun!

Unfortunately the energy companies are highly unlikely to care about or even notice your protest. All that will happen is you will be cold when you don't have to.

So much sympathy for those who cannot afford these ridiculous prices, and for those of us who just about can and have to. But to claim somehow that you're virtuous for choosing to be cold is ridiculous. Anyway, have fun with your project!

Rosio · 18/09/2022 01:14

DH put our heating on this morning when living room thermo read 16c, but I made him turn it off and put on the electric fan heater, I assume heating one room for 20 mins with that is cheaper than the boiler heating all the rooms

The issue with that is damp. I just moved into a house where my first job was getting rid of all the black mould that had been building up, because the windows were rarely ever opened and the heating had been off for many months (late winter to mid-summer) by the time I moved in.

I'd rather pay an energy giant over the odds when it does get cold than a tonne of builders having to deal with structural damage over time.

mamabear715 · 18/09/2022 09:32

@Scianel :-)

Goldenphoenix · 18/09/2022 09:35

I have dug the heated throws out, have two now - one for me and one for the kids. After the initial outlay they cost pennies to run and perfect for this time of year to help me delay putting on the heating for a bit longer!

mamabear715 · 18/09/2022 09:37

I leave my dressing gown nearby & just pop it over my clothes if I feel a bit nippy. The person who invented them should have a medal as big as a dustbin lid, as far as I'm concerned.

Grantanow · 18/09/2022 09:43

We had friends round for a meal and it felt chilly so we put the CH on.

I was chilly on Friday night too, especially my feet.
But I was too lazy to go upstairs and get my slippers and dressing gown. So I obviously wasn't that cold!

But i did wear them last night and I was nice and toasty, so I reckon i can get away with not putting the heating on just yet.
My son's room was pretty chilly, though, which it always is, so I'm going to get an electric blanket for him.

ivfbabymomma1 · 18/09/2022 12:25

Normally I probably would have it on but for obviously reasons I'm trying to push myself a bit further!! I imagine October it will be on! But I absolutely would under normal circumstances so I don't blame you!!

bbcdefg · 18/09/2022 15:47

I'm sitting in my house in a pair of fleecy lined trousers, a vest, long sleeve top and a jumper. I'm freezing so I'm putting an oodie on on top and going to get a heated blanket. But I honestly can't cope with this cold.
