Campervan parked in front of my garage

I own a garage that's on the next side street to where I live. We don't put our cars in it because it's used to store things. My husband's things mostly. Our aim is to clear it out so we can put one of our cars in it. My husband sometimes puts his car in front of the garage. Anyway there is an absolutely enormous campervan parked in front of our garage. Its parked so close up to the garage doors that we couldn't go in the garage at all. And obviously prevents us from parking in front of it. They tried to park there on Monday but my husband stopped them. No idea who they are but my husband works nights so not here.

Well when I legally park on the side street near me infront of someone’s house who does not like me parking there I come back to find my car has been keyed all round. 🤷‍♀️

I'm one of the tiny minority who voted YABU. I did so because I got the strong impression from your OP that you and your husband have some vague plan to clear the garage at some indeterminate date so that you can actually park a car in it.

Since you're not needing to get a car in and out just now, and don't sound like you're actively in and out doing the clearing at the present time, then it seems to be that you're being rather petty - "it's my ball and you're not playing" sort of style.

If I've got it wrong, I apologise.

So you’re saying it’s totally fine for strangers to park on private land and obstruct access as long as the owner doesn’t need to get through at that exact point? You’d leave your car on a strangers driveway?

you sound very inconsiderate and entitled

How has this thread been allowed to progress without a diagram?

Shocking! 😂

Round here there'd be a post on the local Facebook group before the handbrake was on!

Makes me roll my eyes, but it's surprisingly effective at shaming people into moving.

Obviously you include the number plate,
and the first 20 posts are people checking if it's got tax and MOT.

Extra points for showing the miniscule gap between vehicle and garage. Preferably with something incongruous for scale. Like a croissant.

Seriously though, is it just parked up or do you think they're sleeping in it?

This is exactly the way to handle it. We also have a garage sited away from the house in a side road which people love to park in front of - no idea why because there is ample space both in bays and at the side of the road, plus it is totally unlit and cars are often broken into if left there. When a polite note hasn't worked, it is amazing how quickly a photo of shame on Facebook works! Last time I had a message from the owner within 5 minutes asking me to remove the picture as it was invading her privacy (😂), that she had only been there a few minutes to unload (she had parked there all day the previous day and had been there for over an hour that day), and she would move it immediately. It took a few back and forth messages pointing out she wasn't just dropping something off and asking if it was OK to repeatedly block access to another's property, and I actually got an apology! She hasn't parked there since.

This followed by "He says he's pretty sure its our next door neighbours." later on pretty much shows this is not true 🤣

The van parked on Monday is not the same van. I thought it was but it's isn't

I’m presuming that (as usual) no-one has read OP’s update.

Just me and you by the looks of it

My thoughts exactly!

Lovemusic33 · 15/09/2022 08:44

Why do people keep asking OP if it’s on her drive? She’s explained the garage is not outside her house. Lots of people have garages that are not outside there houses, usually in a block/row of garages on the same road?

Put a note on the campervan, saying if they don’t remove it you will be opening the garage door damaging their precious camper. Cheeky fuckers.

Brilliant! We have a very uncomfortable sofa and a small garden. Should we pop round when you’re at work to sit on your sofa and relax in your garden? After all, you wouldn’t be using them, right? It’d be a bit mean of you to object, and exactly like saying “It’s my ball and you’re not playing with it” 🙄

Put up a notice on the garage saying 'Private garage in use, please do not park on the drive or you will be towed.'

only the council and regulated authorities like police can issue orders for towing or clamping, they wont do that on private property which is a civil issue so towing them would be illegal.

I think OP should wait with a thermos of hot tea and a packet of hobnobs and when the driver returns, offer them a cuppa and a biscuit and have a nice chat.

Have a biscuit yourself while we're waiting.

This is the same logic, which would lead to randoms sleeping in your bed when you’re out or using your house whilst you’re away.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 15/09/2022 10:22

Sorry, i havnt RTFT so this might have been suggested already. Do you have a wheel clamp/lock? I would clamp it and leave your phone number so she actually has to get in touch with you before she can move it.

Zonder · 15/09/2022 10:47

Hope it's gone now

DaSilvaP · 15/09/2022 11:00

StridTheKiller · 14/09/2022 20:29

Torch it.

Maybe try some nicer methods first?
Quite a lot can be achieved by asking people nicely and talking to them as equals. Only if that doesn't work, then consider what next.

TheEggChair · 15/09/2022 11:15

It sounds like your garage driveway is being advertised onl8ne for additional parking for a fee. Get a penguin bollard and signs up ASAP. Someone's idea up thread of advertising the van for sale with your number on for people to call will get the quickest results.

Everanewbie · 15/09/2022 11:26

I would be interested to hear the culprit outline their rationale for why this is ok. I just can't see how their brain is working on this.

Great idea if you want a criminal record

TeapotCollection · 15/09/2022 13:46

I would actually clamp it, then when they kick off say “Oh dear, my husband is away and before he went he told me that a friend of his would be parking here and I was to put the clamp on. I just assumed this was his vehicle, never gave it a thought that anyone would just assume they can park on our land”

Most of which is criminal damage yeah...

torch it
pop the tyres
scratch “DO NOT PARK HERE” in the windscreen with your key 😈

I like you.

It's on OP's private property fgs Hmm

That's a good enough reason for it to be shifted. It doesn't matter what they do or do not use their OWN drive and garage for, it's theirs!

Ask @a1poshpaws she seems to be on the same wavelength as the cheeky parking fucker Grin
