To find the Paddington memes so irritating and borderline offensive?

Getting lots of Paddington memes on my Facebook feed related to the Queen's death. Even saw a disgustingly twee one today with an image of Paddington and the Queen walking off into the distance hand in hand, with a caption something like 'I'm very tired now Paddington, will you take me to Philip now?' 🙄

Now I know the Paddington sketch from the Jubilee was mildly amusing, I enjoyed it at the time, but for some reason this mawkish and ridiculous association of a child's toy with the death of a respected leader is really pissing me off. Is it just me or does anyone else feel the same?

wow what a trivial thing to get upset about. you must have something really going on in your life for Paddington to upset you this much to write to Mumsnet

GingerAlison · 13/09/2022 19:33

i get irritated by daft posts in my email news feed like this one

Ladybyrd · 13/09/2022 19:34

@GingerAlison And yet you found time in your busy, interesting life to respond.

FeatherBlower · 13/09/2022 19:38

saraclara · 12/09/2022 19:34

Yep, I hate them. Twee, overly sentimental and thoroughly cringe worthy. I wish it was possible to block them from my social media.

They're also ruining Paddington as a book character.

Agree! Also hated the sketch at the jubilee too…

Im responding to the email I just received! And please stop notifying me too! . Thats evan worse. Thinking of leaving Mumsnet due to the amount of really stupid posts. they are realy silly of late , juvenile and not acts of mature adults

Hide Thread is good. You don’t even have to open it if you think it’ll offend you.

Toomuchtrouble4me · 13/09/2022 19:44

I thought the drawings were quite sweet. Not something I’m invested in but I couldn’t muster the interest to be irritated by them either. They are harming nobody and some obviously like them. 🤷‍♀️ YABU - different strokes …

All of my Mumsnet notifications go straight into the spam box. Suggest you do the same.

A580Hojas · 13/09/2022 19:47

GingerAlison - don't get worked up. You just need to adjust your settings or notifications or something. And even if you get tagged in a thread or notified about it in an email (you can make that stop if you want to) there's literally 0 obligation on you to respond in any way. Don't worry. No one cares what you think. No one cares what anyone thinks on Mumsnet. We're all just posting into the atmosphere and it's totally meaningless. Be calm Smile.

anon666 · 13/09/2022 19:48

This thread has me howling with laughter. I needed a laugh, it's been a bit sombre since Thursday lunch when events started happening.

I think it's harmless tbh, and if it floats your boat, fine. People are, searching for a way to articulate their feelings and if it helps so be it. As Nietzsche said, we've killed God, so we have nothing left to express the void after death. (yes I had to Google Nietzsche to get the spelling right). If Paddington can fill that void as an infantilising Grim Reaper, so be it. 😂

But I also think it's fine to see it all as a load of sentimental old garbage. Also it is a bit bizarre on so many levels. It takes all sorts.

I'm just glad someone put words to that slightly nauseating feeling I got scrolling through ever more variations on it.

The Captain Tom / Prince Phillip thing is also pricelessly crap.

I mean they are dead, but what Queen amd Prince Phillip would have made of it all, God only knows. They both had a sense of humour.

Who are you talking to? You know Mumsnet can’t hear you talking into the void, yes?

And why do you think we care what notifications you receive?

Sparklingbrook · 13/09/2022 19:50

I never even look at my @ notifications, I have 15 outstanding apparently.

OnlyEverAutumn · 12/09/2022 19:32

Terrible. Paddington should be more widely respected and not exploited in this way 🙄.

🤣🤣

turningpurpleygreen · 13/09/2022 20:30

@Deguster

Isn't it!

When did this start? Was it Diana?

Did people do this for previous monarchs?

BarbaraVineFan · 13/09/2022 20:33

Arghhhhh now the bloody BBC has jumped on the bandwagon, ffs! This is from the BBC News website

I’m trying to be patient but if one more person shares that nauseating poem on Facebook about going to Philip, I will hunt them down & hurt them. Everyone has the right to express themselves, I just don’t understand why they feel they must do it through bad poetry.

And on facebook as well.. it's just so cringe worthy.

Scottsy100 · 13/09/2022 20:37

I think it’s a ridiculous thing to get offended over and you obviously have far too much time on your hands. If silly memes make people smile or offer a little comfort then does that really affect you

gnilliwdog · 13/09/2022 20:41

Not a fan of Paddington, preferred E.Nesbitt. Still, I find it interesting how many frustrated poets the nation has been concealing, however. As if there are a multitude of romantic souls, longing to express themselves, who have kept it under wraps until now - a socially acceptable time to be expressive. Bring back the arts, and let's have some better poetry all round, I say. I don't think Paddington quite cuts it, however.

Offended? I think you'll find that we're just really irritated or in danger of our eyes rolling permanently to the back of our heads.

Sparklingbrook · 13/09/2022 20:45

So now we have Paddington instead of Strictly. It's a Paddington takeover.

Mollymoostoo · 13/09/2022 20:47

Funny how noonenis drawing pictures of her with Daniel Craig strapped to her back.

LaDamaDeElche · 13/09/2022 20:47

Borderline offensive 😂 Yes, YABU.

Realitysucks · 13/09/2022 20:48

Oh come on you obviously have never watched Paddington! Yes he is a fictional character but he loved the Queen! You obviously just don’t get it!

Well one skit was 10 years ago and the other 3 months ago. So no not really.
