AIBU?

To find the Paddington memes so irritating and borderline offensive?

Getting lots of Paddington memes on my Facebook feed related to the Queen's death. Even saw a disgustingly twee one today with an image of Paddington and the Queen walking off into the distance hand in hand, with a caption something like 'I'm very tired now Paddington, will you take me to Philip now?' 🙄

Now I know the Paddington sketch from the Jubilee was mildly amusing, I enjoyed it at the time, but for some reason this mawkish and ridiculous association of a child's toy with the death of a respected leader is really pissing me off. Is it just me or does anyone else feel the same?

It makes me cringe. Some absolute shite is being shared on Facebook.

'I'm very tired now Paddington, will you take me to Philip now?'

I don't understand that one. Unless Paddington is also dead.

No, tbh I don't mind at all.
Might be just me but I think they are quite sweet. Now, the sketch of HRH as Freddie Mercury, I think is awful..

Terrible. Paddington should be more widely respected and not exploited in this way 🙄.

That's the stuff of nightmares.

O do give over. What difference, overall, does it make to you? Let people express themselves how they wish. At least they're not writing poetry.

Mawkish is exactly the right word OP. I agree. I might add maudlin as well.

i loved the sketch. These memes make me cringe.

You’ve not seen the poems then?

Paddington isnt a toy, he is a fictitious character who can be anything you want it to be, it can be a bear leading you to the afterlife to meet your husband, it can be in toy form, there can be stories about him

Out of all the things you could be offended about, you're offended about some cartoons of a fictitious bear?

Yep, I hate them. Twee, overly sentimental and thoroughly cringe worthy. I wish it was possible to block them from my social media.

They're also ruining Paddington as a book character.

Is Paddington dead!?!?

I think they’re awful but - trying to be kind - if that’s how people, especially children, want to remember her that’s fine isn’t it? It doesn’t really matter. Give it a few weeks and no one will remember the stupid poems and utter crap that’s floating about on Facebook etc at the moment.

They remind me of those awful ones when Prince Philip died and they had Captain Tom waiting for him .

The thing is I feel like one sketch has now taken a life of its own.
If HM had been connected with Paddington in a more long standing way then fine. But it was literally one sketch in the last year of her life.
The first pic / meme was quite sweet. Now it’s just very annoying and repetitive.
Feels like it’s reducing the wonderful rich huge wealth of experiences down to one small sketch and a marmalade sandwich.
People have put jars or marmalade in with flowers ffs.
I personally don’t want HM to be forever connected with Paddington.

Can't bear them (no pun, etc), but all part of the general mawk-fest that is currently FB. I suppose we'll be moving on to the next thing soon enough.

That made me laugh 😆

My neighbourhood announced on Facebook they’re going to do a “clap for the queen” on your doorstep thing like the whole nhs covid thing and my 10 year old who has autism and is very black and white about things said, “why do that? She can’t hear them. She’s dead”.

🙈🙈

I thought it was just me. They're very cute but surely completely inappropriate and possibly offensive. Paddington is not a deity.

YANBU I can't quite put my finger on it but I don't like the Paddington art- and I have no issue with either Paddington or the Queen otherwise. I have enjoyed some of the other art that has come out (I even don't mind the HRH x Freddie pic, it's quite funny) but Paddington and the endless icky poems are too far for me.

I also found the Paddington sketch a bit difficult to watch as it sort of felt like HM Queen wasn't quite there. Particularly towards the end of the sketch, felt like an elderly lady being wheeled out for show. Totally different to the James Bond one.
