To ask if your company has said anything about the bank holiday?

I work for a big company, we always have bank holidays off. My husband works for a small company and bank holidays come out his leave allowance but the business is always closed. Neither of our companies have acknowledged the bank holiday next Monday. I have meetings booked - my boss and my 'big boss' haven't heard anything from the powers that be. Has your company said anything?

I assume you mean BH are added into his annual leave and he books them as annual leave takes as they fall?

RedRobyn2021 · 12/09/2022 19:06

Small company and we are closed

maddiemookins16mum · 12/09/2022 19:10

Yes, we have the day off. If anyone prefers to work (they still could to an extent), the can take another day before 31 Dec.

Christmascaroll · 12/09/2022 19:13

For the Really big companies it's probably waiting for the exec's to make a decision from whatever remote island they're on.

Meseekslookatme · 12/09/2022 19:14

We will be closed.
Paid day off

RenegadeKeeblerElf · 12/09/2022 19:17

NHS, we've been told business as usual as it is too short notice to rearrange planned activity. We are a speciality with a lot of very time sensitive care though so not easy to reschedule. Clinical staff will work as normal (tbc about pay rate), non clinical to use annual leave.

VicSynix · 12/09/2022 19:18

Work for a GP surgery (non medical but see patients). Told to rearrange any appointments for next Monday as it's a bank holiday, haven't been told anything about pay/leave etc. Luckily I tend to use Mondays for admin but I really, really feel for everyone trying to rearrange and rebook appointments. We've got more than enough to deal with right now!

emmathedilemma · 12/09/2022 19:18

We’re closing all uk offices but the email confirmation didn’t come out until nearly 5pm today.

Whatafustercluck · 12/09/2022 19:23

Yes, bank holiday and confirmed in company-wide comms, even down to advising staff to claim it back if their annual leave falls over it.

Mouseaboutthehouse · 12/09/2022 19:25

@MrsMontyD I mean he gets x days if which 8 (or however many it is) are bank holidays. There's some closure dates at Christmas too.

We have had confirmation of closure now too, with allowances for those already on leave on Mon/work PT/ have to still work.

NHS we are working as usual

anyone wanting to take day off will have to take it as annual leave but this must be authorised by managers (this already causing me a headache)

we are also being told to avoid central London how some are meant to get to work I’m not sure

WimbyAce · 12/09/2022 19:56

I was just watching our staff briefing from earlier and seems like they were awaiting an update from nhs employers regarding pay rates etc but the assumption is it will be normal afc bank holiday ts&Cs.

Boreded · 12/09/2022 19:58

EmergencyPoncho · 12/09/2022 17:07

Knickerless it's not mandatory.

Thankfully not, we’d be screwed for a week of each month 🙈

MrsGamgee · 12/09/2022 19:58

Work for a financial institution and my team are always closed for bank Holidays, the call centre is always open.

We received an email to say all colleagues would be getting the day off, holiday not coming out of our allowance.

DH also works for a financial institution and so far they haven't heard anything.

AffIt · 12/09/2022 19:59

Nothing official yet.

I'm a global HoD for an international company, but the vast amount of our clients are in NA, so I would imagine those of us in the UK / EU will be given a 'quiet pass' in the morning (I think the funeral is 11am?) then expected to get on with it when NY opens at 2pm GMT.

Whitewolf2 · 12/09/2022 20:00

Medium sized US owned firm, UK HR have said today the office is still open for anyone who needs to come in but they will honour the bank holiday. Which presumably means we can all take it off.

fairgame84 · 12/09/2022 20:03

DH works for a small company. They are staying open and said if DH doesn't work he will lose a holiday day. He's going to work.
I'm on mat leave but otherwise I'm a nurse in the nhs so I would get BH pay if I was on shift.

Speedbumps · 12/09/2022 20:19

I wonder if we all work for the same large company...

Anyway, mine haven't said anything yet. I can't imagine they wouldn't give is the day off. The kids' school and nursery are closed so if they don't I'll have to take leave

Ragwort · 12/09/2022 20:23

Yes ... retail, we have been told we will be closed and have an additional Bank Holiday which we still have to 'book' but the allowance has been changed to reflect the extra holiday. Excellent for me as I had already booked Tuesday - Fri off (Mondays always a busy day so I rarely take it off) .. now I can get away on Sunday and have a six day break. Smile.

IsTheOffDutyDoneYet · 12/09/2022 20:23

NHS here too (district nurse). We will be in and doing calls as usual. No comms yet RE leave, though it’s been marked in our Employee Online as “Queens funeral”. No additional leave hours have been added (yet).

LBOCS2 · 12/09/2022 20:23

My medium sized company is closing, we had an email about it at about 4pm confirming.

Imanessexgirlgetmeoutofhere · 12/09/2022 20:25

Small company, told today we will not be given the bank holiday. Contracts list the bank holidays we get (Easter Sunday, May day etc)

Anyone who wants to take it as holiday or unpaid leave can

ScampiFlies · 12/09/2022 20:30

Haven't heard but it's a hotel so I doubt it. Dh has heard and his small company will be closed, they'll be paid and holidays untouched.

Comefromaway · 12/09/2022 20:31

Aubriella · 12/09/2022 17:12

bank holidays come out his leave allowance but the business is always close

Is that legal? Forcing employees not to work BHs and being unpaid for them?

Perfectly legal. Employers have the right to have shutdowns or close on bank holidays and for it to come out of normal holiday entitlement.

We are closed on all bank holidays and for 10 days at Christmas and it comes out of our holiday allowance. The employer has to give twice as much notice as the length of holiday so for 1 day holiday they have to give 2 days notice.

ShamedBySiri · 12/09/2022 20:47

NHS here. My department isn't outpatient but it's not wards, day case only so we work Monday to Friday plus on call, Bank holidays taken as they come.
Currently being asked if we want to work Monday or alternatively do a list on Saturday. Half the department are from the Philippines and I quite understand they aren't particularly concerned to be off on Monday. Would I bother for the funeral if whoever is head of state in the Philippines?
So the discussion is centred on pay - Bank holiday rate being greater than Saturday rate. And time in lieu.

Personally I have said I do not want to work on Monday. I don't want to be at work and then come home and watch the funeral on iPlayer in the evening. I have great respect and love for The Queen and would like the day off.

Obviously the wards have to be staffed whatever though I think that those who would like the day off should be able to swap with someone who would rather earn the extra money.
