To ask if your company has said anything about the bank holiday?

I work for a big company, we always have bank holidays off. My husband works for a small company and bank holidays come out his leave allowance but the business is always closed. Neither of our companies have acknowledged the bank holiday next Monday. I have meetings booked - my boss and my 'big boss' haven't heard anything from the powers that be. Has your company said anything?

Work in HE and most of the campus will be closed. They are keeping some essential services for students open as it is arrivals weekend the days before.

I work for a big company although I’ve got annual leave this week. Email was sent about 5pm saying that some parts of the business need to be open (customer facing) including my department although as usual for bank holidays not as many people will be needed for my department or for as long as usual so not sure what I’ll be doing yet.

People who already had the day off are to cancel holiday as it will be a bank holiday so not taken out of their leave entitlement.

Small organisation with a Royal Charter here. It was my decision to make and I told everyone today we would be shut, so extra day off, no need to use AL. Got 2 staff who already booked that day off (weeks ago) so they are getting a days AL back to use as they see fit.

What are you expecting them to say? It's a bank holiday ergo no work on Monday.

You didn't think this through did you?

So you think every Policeman, fireman, paramedic, nurse, care home employee train driver, bus driver, power station worker etc will have 'no work on Monday'?

TwoMonthsOff · 12/09/2022 18:28

yes announced officially today

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 12/09/2022 18:28

Yeah we have. Although there are only 4 of us and we all have young kids in first schools so we decided to take the BH.

MirandaWest · 12/09/2022 18:29

Anyone who does have to work that day will have it as TOIL at another time.

SquigglePigs · 12/09/2022 18:29

DH's company have confirmed staff are not expected to work. Nursery are closed. My large business hasn't said anything. Hoping we get the day off. If it's given but pro-rated like bank holidays usually are then I'll lose 2.5hrs annual leave to cover the third of the day I don't get, which will be really annoying.

Same here. Still waiting to hear officially whats happening from head office, work in a supermarket. Store manager will accommodate people wanting the time off but don't know yet if I'll have to make up the time another day, take it out of my annual leave or if it'll be added as a extra bank holiday to annual leave.

Same

I work for a medium size company - 500 or so employees and we were told this morning that they were honouring the bank holiday and set out what everyone needed to do, depending on their role. Some employees work 24/7 shifts so may be working but get another day off of their choosing.

BrianWankum · 12/09/2022 18:40

NHS as well, and can't believe they haven't communicated a decision yet! I think it's pretty poor.

Lochjeda · 12/09/2022 18:42

Local Scottish authority and we are already off next Monday anyway for a long weekend. So we got an email saying that they will discuss at the next cabinet giving us a day in lieu for it.

Same here!

Crunchymum · 12/09/2022 18:45

Not a peep from my company (head office is Canada but we have a massive US office too). Oddly no word from kids school either.

Figgygal · 12/09/2022 18:46

Christ give them a chance theres endless things to think of here beyond are we closing or not? At our place it's going to create an awful headache with systems, timesheets, payroll, how we manage part timers etc stuff like this is usually months in the planning theyve got days

FFSandmoreFFS · 12/09/2022 18:48

We’ve been told we’re closed with one person on call for emergencies.

DH not specifically told but Civil Service so I assume he’ll be off.

nursery & school both confirmed closure
with nursery reimbursing a days fees.

Brightstar29 · 12/09/2022 18:49

I work for the NHS (in a 9-5 role with bank holidays off) in mental health and we get it off which surprised me to be honest because we’ve had to re-arrange patients who are booked in.

starryeyed19 · 12/09/2022 18:50

Nope, not a sausage from my workplace (a university)

WimbyAce · 12/09/2022 18:51

I am guessing with NHS it is difficult trying to work out what exactly will close as so many appointments will have been booked in for Monday and I'm sure they won't want to cancel all of them. Weighing that up against the huge cost of paying people for working the bank holiday.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 12/09/2022 18:53

i see Aldi is closed

MrsLargeEmbodied · 12/09/2022 18:54

my dentist has cancelled my appt.

rafanadalsarms · 12/09/2022 18:55

Local authority and its a bank holiday like any other, email today

thesurrealist · 12/09/2022 18:56

For all the NHS staff who are waiting to hear - I'm NHS England and saw some letters to providers and primary care on out intranet today. I'm assuming they are on the usual NHS site and have been sent to al, Chief Execs and will be shared tomorrow.

It does confirm a BH but, as usual, there's a shed load of prep to do beforehand. Not to mention dealing with the fallout of everything that has been cancelled or postponed this week.....it must be costing us £millions that we need desperately for patient care.

greyinganddecaying · 12/09/2022 19:00

Part time worker here - the company has directed all to take Monday as a bank holiday. Part timers get a full day (not prorata-ed) as it's an unexpected "forced" day off.

DomingoinLittleOakley · 12/09/2022 19:05

I actually work for a bank (albeit not one with a UK HQ) and they haven't confirmed one way or the other!

However, we are all assuming we will get the day off.
