I'd really like some ideas for something new to read or watch with some element of romance.

Have previously loved:
Elizabeth and Darcy
Jane and Rochester
Harriet Vane and Peter Wimsey
Robin and Strike
Linden and Holder
Mulder and Scully
Margaret Hale and Mr Thornton
Brienne of Tarth and Jaime Lannister

Please give me your favourites.

So glad to see a bunch of Heyers mentioned!

I’d add Abby and Miles Calverleigh and Kitty and Freddy.

witheringrowan · 13/09/2022 09:06

Gen & Attolia (The Queen's Thief).

SittingontheSidelines · 13/09/2022 09:07

Charles and Sebastian
Daphne and Hari
Lucy Snowe and M. Emmanuel.

(A bit of a doomed love theme going on here)

And YES to Sophie and Howl.

blackberriesaretheonlyfruit · 13/09/2022 09:08

Matilde and Matthew Bartholomew

@AquaticSewingMachine god I haven't read that for so long! I need to revisit it I really do.

Mine have mostly been covered. Spike/Buffy, Wentworth/Anne and Strike/Robin being favourites.

Tragically there is a couple in some Harry Potter fanfic which I love but it has to be AU with a different ending or else it is highly problematic! I set my filters very strictly! There is no part of that sentence I'm not embarrassed by btw.

DH says Fred and Daphne.

Snape and Hermione?

Insertdeadcatsnamehere · 13/09/2022 09:41

Jamie and Claire
Jamie and John Grey
Rachel and Joey (can't stand Ross)

shortpeopleproblems · 13/09/2022 09:53

Aramis and the Queen (BBC Musketeers)

Matthew and Mary (Downton Abbey)

Jack and Rebecca (This is Us)

Jane and Rafael (Jane the Virgin)

Ahhh my heart!!

Ratonastick · 13/09/2022 09:55

Bendrix and Sarah in The End of The Affair. Jealousy, obsession, religion and doomed love, what’s not to love!

noworklifebalance · 13/09/2022 10:00

Has anyone said Rory Gilmore & Jess what’s-his-face?

zingally · 13/09/2022 12:05

Claire and Jamie from Outlander. The books are much better than the tv series.

ShouldersBackChestOutChinUp · 13/09/2022 12:50

Jamie and Claire

Brefugee · 13/09/2022 12:52

if you like Jane Austen have you read any Georgette Heyer? Try Venetia.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 13/09/2022 13:35

Lucy Snowe and M. Emmanuel.

I don't know about that one. Personally I thought she had him bang to rights first time, when she says a more arrogant little man never filled a Professor's chair.

He's not as bad as Rochester, but bad enough. Makes you wonder whatever kind of a man M. Hegel must have been!

Hannibal and Clarice is an interesting one. I've been reading some stuff about that character being the successor of the Gothic and vampire narrative. There's something a bit supernatural about his uncanny powers of perception, and the Bride of Dracula idea comes across very clearly in the ending of the book Hannibal, which I didn't find quite so unbelievable as the film-makers apparently did. Harris drew the build-up to that one very well, I thought.

But as to the homicidal mania and cannibalism, red flags everywhere. LTB!

LetMeSpeak · 13/09/2022 13:40

Gabby and Carlos (Desperate Housewives)
Chuck and Blair (Gossip Girl)

CocoPlum · 13/09/2022 13:42

No spoilers but certain couples from A Court of Thorns & Roses series!

HumphreyCobblers · 13/09/2022 13:43

Valancy and Barney Snaith
Miss Pettigrew and Joe

So pleased to see al the love for A Town Like Alice, I just love this book and all the relationships in it.

Also Bagoas and Alexander is the most romantic romance I have ever read. It made me think of Simonides and Lyra, Lysis and Alexias and Theseus and Hippolyta.

KentuckyDerbyandJoan · 13/09/2022 13:45

Christina and William, Flambards 🐎

I think we read a lot of the same books! But who are Bagoas and Alexander, and where do I read about them?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 13/09/2022 14:49

This is my second reply I should say!

Can’t believe how many people like Anne and Wentworth - I can’t stand Anne Elliot/ Wentworth 😂

A modern/ less well know one, but the guys from Stephen Fry’s Making History. I can’t remember their names though…

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 13/09/2022 14:50

I mean the main character

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 13/09/2022 14:52

Was glad I was first to say young Cathy and Hareton!

SittingontheSidelines · 13/09/2022 15:20

I've now just started re reading a town like Alice I'd forgotten how much I loved it.

And now I'm going to have to re read this

HumphreyCobblers · 13/09/2022 16:07

InsertPunHere - it is the middle book in Mary Renault's Alexander trilogy, called The Persian Boy. I read it once a year at least.
