I'd really like some ideas for something new to read or watch with some element of romance.

Have previously loved:
Elizabeth and Darcy
Jane and Rochester
Harriet Vane and Peter Wimsey
Robin and Strike
Linden and Holder
Mulder and Scully
Margaret Hale and Mr Thornton
Brienne of Tarth and Jaime Lannister

Please give me your favourites.

From my youth:
Rhett butler and scarlett o'hara (gone with the wind)
The thorn birds
Dirty dancing (Johnny and baby)
Lost in translation with scarlett Johansson

Patrick Merrick & Lawrie Marlow, eventually...(Nicola always had far too much brisk common sense to put up with him).

chouxpetitfilous · 12/09/2022 19:58

Sandy and Kirsten from the OC

LoobyDop · 12/09/2022 19:59

Sawyer and Juliet and Desmond and Penny in Lost.

Can't believe no one has said Claire and Jamie yet! 😂

Amazing chemistry and I love them together

Outlander for those not in the know 😉

God yes but I'm so jealous of Claire!

Verbena87 · 12/09/2022 20:01

Came to say Peter W and Harriet V. Nobody else comes close.

Lady Chatterley and Mellors

You beat me to it. Best one ever.

But also Jo and the professor in Little Women.

Jack and Rose

OMG! I love Joe and Mrs Boon

Yes! Brilliant choice. Jean is one of my favourite heroines of 20th-century literature. I love the fact that she's so ordinary and unprepossessing to begin with, but then makes two amazing journeys in her life, both of which result in her becoming someone else's saviour. Not least, her endeavours result in the burgeoning of a village and then a town. What a woman!

I also find her relationship with the older Neville Strachan very moving.

HuntingoftheSnark · 12/09/2022 20:09

Most of mine have already been mentioned. Bobby and Pam Ewing.

AnaglyptaBandersnatch · 12/09/2022 20:11

Stephen and Isabelle in Birdsong
Caroline and Mac in Green Wing
Sookie and Bill in True Blood
Howl and Sophie in Howl's Moving Castle

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 12/09/2022 20:17

Jack Bristow and Irina Derevko in Alias
Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas (fictional and factual)
Calamity Jane and Wild Bill Hickock (")
Helen Graham and Gilbert Markham
Star and Michael
Commander Adam Dalgliesh and Kate Miskin (unrequited)
Peter Carey's Oscar and Lucinda (also unrequited)
And from Enid Blyton: Allie Mannering and Bill Cunningham, AKA Smugs!

MoChridhe · 12/09/2022 20:17

Jamie and Claire
Also though not romantic but I think Lord John Grey and Brianna have good chemistry.

AramintaLee · 12/09/2022 20:18

Meredith Grey & Derek Shepherd ❤

Whichwhatnow · 12/09/2022 20:21

Clarence and Alabama for me!

Patrick Merrick & Lawrie Marlow, eventually...(Nicola always had far too much brisk common sense to put up with him).

When did he get with Lawrie? He was friends with Nicola first but lusted after Ginty but then got friendly with Nicola again after the disgrace of the o level maths exam.

AquaticSewingMachine · 12/09/2022 20:23

I still get mad every time Fanny Price won't marry Henry Crawford. Yes, he's the morally compromised rake and whatever, but Edward is SO FUCKING BORING.

Also when Lily Bart won't marry Sim Rosedale and grind Bertha into dust under her heel.

LibbyOTV · 12/09/2022 20:25

Vivien and Cay - from the book Desert Hearts. Probably the best lesbian love story I've read! (film also very good).

Simonjt · 12/09/2022 20:26

Nick and Charlie
Carl and Ellie Fredrickson
Daniel and Viktor

EntertainingandFactual · 12/09/2022 20:29

Dawn and Pete Sutcliffe from Gavin & Stacey. For all the wrong reasons! 😄

HuntingoftheSnark · 12/09/2022 20:29

@MarieIVanArkleStinks love the Bill Smugs match with Allie! Also Olivia Brooke and Admiral Twiss in The Diddakoi, Rumer Godden.

lugeforlife · 12/09/2022 20:34

@AquaticSewingMachine god I haven't read that for so long! I need to revisit it I really do.

Mine have mostly been covered. Spike/Buffy, Wentworth/Anne and Strike/Robin being favourites.

Tragically there is a couple in some Harry Potter fanfic which I love but it has to be AU with a different ending or else it is highly problematic! I set my filters very strictly! There is no part of that sentence I'm not embarrassed by btw.

DH says Fred and Daphne.

pompomdaisy · 12/09/2022 20:35

Cathy and Heathcliffe- surely!

FunsizedandFabulous · 12/09/2022 20:35

Strike and Robin in the Robert Galbraith (aka JK Rowing) novels.
Milhouse and Lisa Simpson (never gonna happen)
I was rooting for Eloise Bridgestone and Theo Sharpe.

lifeturnsonadime · 12/09/2022 20:35

Sadie and Jake (11/22/63)
CJ and Simon (The West Wing)
Heathcliff and Cathy
Scarlett and Rhett
