I'd really like some ideas for something new to read or watch with some element of romance.

Have previously loved:
Elizabeth and Darcy
Jane and Rochester
Harriet Vane and Peter Wimsey
Robin and Strike
Linden and Holder
Mulder and Scully
Margaret Hale and Mr Thornton
Brienne of Tarth and Jaime Lannister

Please give me your favourites.

Johnny and Gheorghe in God's Own Country. Amazing film, mesmerising love story.

Jackson and April in Grey's Anatomy.

Zosime · 12/09/2022 20:42

I've seen good things about the Lymond Chronicles but have always been a bit too intimidated to try them.

They are a bit of a project. There's an awful lot of history and travel; they really need to be read with an atlas and a book or website on sixteenth century to hand for reference. But there's adventure and humour and romance as well as the serious stuff. Most of the main characters are Scottish and Scotland is the chief location.

Charles and Sophy from The Grand Sophy
Frederick and Alverstoke from Frederica

And Venetia and Damerel.
And for a very different type of relationship, Adam and Jenny from A Civil Contract. Best enjoyed when one is past the Romeo and Juliet stage of starry eyed teenage romance.

DottyLittleRainbow · 12/09/2022 20:46

Jane Eyre and Mr Rochester
Jo and Mr Bhaer (Little Women)

Anne Shirley and Gilbert Blythe

Absolutely!

charabang · 12/09/2022 20:54

Definitely Ann and Gilbert. Laura and Almonzo (LHOTP) and Pierre and Natasha (War and Peace)

BrandyandGinger · 12/09/2022 20:57

Lucy and George in A Room with A View, but only the film, I didn't like the last chapter of the book.
Nathaniel and Cora in Last of the Mohicans, the film from the 1990s. I think they are the best matched couple in any romance because they are equally brave, good looking and intelligent.

Rachel and Luke from Rachel's Holiday Marian Keyes.

Absolutely agree!
I won’t read the latest book incase they’re not together.

Jane Eyre and Mr Rochester
Jo and Mr Bhaer (Little Women)

Yes to Jane and Mr Rochester.

Shellsbelles · 12/09/2022 21:10

Another vote for Eve and Rourke (JD Robb)
Lady Alys and Davenport (The Rake)

minipie · 12/09/2022 21:59

Scarlet and Gunnar in Nashville

YES!

Flatpackvictory · 12/09/2022 22:06

Maybe I am remembering incorrectly but... didn't Spike try to rape Buffy?!

Meredith and Derek. (Also loved Karev and Jo together. Their ending was awful and unexpected.)

PutinIsAWarCriminal · 12/09/2022 22:11

@Flatpackvictory he did. He was a monster and the attempted rape was the trigger that made him go through the trials to get his soul back. She never forgave or trusted him properly again but he gave his life to save them all in the end. I watched it too often, didn't I!

When did he get with Lawrie? He was friends with Nicola first but lusted after Ginty but then got friendly with Nicola again after the disgrace of the o level maths exam.

He didn't. But they absolutely should. Imagine the dinner parties...

Flatpackvictory · 12/09/2022 22:22

@PutinIsAWarCriminal thanks! Yes I'd forgotten all that. I'm waiting for DC to be old enough so I can watch it all again.

I love Peter and Gamora and their "unspoken thing". (Guardians of the galaxy - best superhero films ever!)

KingscoteStaff · 12/09/2022 22:25

Nicola and Patrick

Carolyn and Herc

Martin and Princess Theresa

Harriet and Peter

Alexander and Bagoas

CymruChris · 12/09/2022 22:55

Also from Lost the more understated Rose and Bernard!

CymruChris · 12/09/2022 22:59

Castle and Beckett

If we're talking Greys - Mark and Lexie 🥺

HereIComeAgain · 12/09/2022 23:04

Lots already mentioned like Joey & Pacey and Strike & Robin - also Chuck Bass & Blair Waldorf in Gossip Girl.

Scarlett & Gunnar sang me down the aisle at my wedding, their chemistry was insane. The last series was sacrilege though.

TheLoupGarou · 12/09/2022 23:08

@AnaglyptaBandersnatch I was going to say Sophie and Howl too but I thought no one else understand ❤️. They are my all-time favourite.

Joey and Pacey definitely in Dawson's Creek.
Rory and Jesse in Gilmore Girls
Buffy and Spike
Kate and Curran in the Kate Daniels series.

I am fond of the (wholly unrealistic) trope if the bad boy changing for the woman he loves 😂

justdonttry · 12/09/2022 23:09

Most of these couples would not last!

Cathy and Heathcliff are the most toxic people ever. It would end in murder. They live for pettyness and malice.

Cathy Jr and Hareton for life

justdonttry · 12/09/2022 23:09

Oh and Cam and Mitchell

TheLoupGarou · 12/09/2022 23:10

I always shipped Jacob and Bella in twilight.

Zosime · 12/09/2022 23:13

I am fond of the (wholly unrealistic) trope if the bad boy changing for the woman he loves

Georgette Heyer's Devil's Cub.

Also, he's not as much of a bad boy as he likes to think he is, but Marcus Didius Falco and Helena Justina.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 12/09/2022 23:14

The second Mrs de Winter and Maximilian in Rebecca…

Pallisers · 12/09/2022 23:16

Allywill · 12/09/2022 16:30

Jean Paget and Joe Harman (Town like Alice - my favourite book)

oh yes. Loved that book. The scene where they meet up again in Australia and it is awkward and then she puts on a sarong ... my teenage self nearly expired.

I also love the chemistry between Eva Ibbotson's heros/heroines, especially Anna and Rupert; Harriet and Rom; and Ruth and Quinton.
