Is a size 14 viewed as overweight?

Just reading online that uk size 16 is the average size of a uk woman right now. Im a size 14 and 5ft 3 so always felt overweight anyway but in reality would you view someone as a size 14 overweight? For me anyone who can fit into a size 10 would be considered slim although I know clothes sizes come up different depending on shop. Just curious what dress size people on here buy and if they consider themselves overweight.

Do you really want to hurt me?

Do you really want to make me cry?

No! I want you to stop caring what the clothes labels say 🤣

primeoflife · 11/09/2022 17:54

@deedledeedledum that's so not true, I fitted in to a size 6 dress in Next. I am not skinny! It's ridiculous

BeanieTeen · 11/09/2022 19:01

@primeoflife but that’s one item of clothing. I think we can all figure out our ‘general size’ by what most of our clothes are. I’m generally a size 10, that’s my go to - but of course I own items that are 8 and 12 and occasionally a size 6 and there’s a jumper dress in my cupboard somewhere that I think is a 14. That doesn’t make me a size 6 or 14 though. I’m a size 10.

Sceptre86 · 11/09/2022 19:05

I'm 5ft 3 and a size 14 when I weighed 14 stone. So yes on me it was obese even.

primeoflife · 11/09/2022 20:09

@BeanieTeen oh yes, I am definitely not a size 6 but I still fit into a 10 when I'm a good stone more than I was 20 years ago and fitted into a 10 easily.

I just think vanity sizing is bonkers, Next is one of the worst though and I always size down there. Thankfully there's nothing my 16 year old would wear there as she at 5'7 and 7 stone would be too slim for any of their clothes! It's madness

Anonymouseposter · 11/09/2022 20:17

It's really too simple to ask whether a certain dress size is overweight. At 5' 3" size 14 probably is overweight but for someone of 5'9" with broad shoulders size 14 probably wouldn't be overweight.
It isn't a question of taller people carrying it better, it's just that some people's actual frame is bigger, and they aren't carrying extra fat.

Friarclose · 11/09/2022 20:21

I'm 5'3 and a size 14/16. I'm 13st. Definitely overweight and look it. I'm 39 and perimenopausal and finding it very difficult to lose weight. Ideally I'd like to get back to 10st but I'd settle for 11. I really do need to make an effort.

MainliningChocolate · 11/09/2022 20:30

I am 6ft 1 and size 12/14 depending on shops and weigh 11st 6. My bmi is healthy but I am not, v unfit and visible fat on stomach and back. Like a pp said, healthy is so dependent on your frame and activity levels, not just a clothes number. I may be relatively slim in the right clothes but underneath I am not healthy and really need to start exercising.

Chazx · 11/09/2022 21:56

i'm 5 ft 8 inch and 9 stone 13. bmi is 21.

Lightest I've been is 8 stone and heaviest is 12 stone 3.

i wear a 12 in relaxed fit clothes or a 14 in more fitted cuts. I'm very wide framed for a woman.

Honestly ... it's very easy to overeat. Since I lost 42 lbs and am looking at portion sizes of things like breakfast cereals, crisps, nuts etc, we need MUCH less food than we think.

Mumsnet never fails to deliver does it? Hmm

dontyouwishyourgirlfriendwas · 11/09/2022 22:02

I’m a size 14 and I’m quite short so I’m definitely overweight. It’s not something that bothers me though and I feel like I look fine. However I definitely don’t want to gain weight because my Dr said if my BMI goes over 35 then I have to come off the hormonal contraception I’m on, which I like.

But it’s an interesting one because in terms of clothing most ‘plus size’ shops cater to size 16+. So in that respect I’d describe myself as ‘mid size’.

FourChimneys · 11/09/2022 22:07

The dress I got married in over 30 years ago is interesting. It's a size 12. It still fits me perfectly although my go-to size now is an 8. A clear indication of vanity sizing.

For the record I feel fat if I go over 8 and a half stone but everyone is different. How you feel is far more important than the number on your scales.

Try the low carb one (Mosley) it worked for me last year, exactly the same as you - crazy menopausal weight gain, not helped by lockdown. I was 13' and now down to 9' in 15 months, it can be done, even uphill against bloody hormones.

Siameasy · 11/09/2022 22:17

Defo overweight for me but that’s a high street 14. My wedding dress was a 12 and I was skeletal at that time! I’m half a stone heavier now and I buy an 8 in shops. No consistency at all!

Mosley is a shot show of a charleton

I'm 5'8" and now the upper reaches of a 12.

I've been a 12 for over a decade but I'm now
definitely above the weight I should be. I need to lose weight around my torso and back especially.

Even though I'm tall, if I edged into a size 14 I would certainly be overweight.

Shocked at the average size being a 16 in the UK - where are all these people!

@kateandme why do you think Michael Moseley is a charlatan?

I did his original 5:2 in 2013 and lost a ridiculous amount of weight in two months. It was when the calorie count was 500 calories per day twice weekly, not the 800 they've changed it to now.

When I'd reached my target weight I stopped the diet completely, but it took almost five years for it to creep back up. I thought it was amazing.

knitnerd90 · 12/09/2022 01:00

Dress sizes really are next to useless as they vary so much and people carry weight differently. I'm 5'9". Normal BMI correlates to about 9-14st. That's a massive range! At a size 14 I'd be fine. I think people are overestimating just how large a UK 14 is especially if someone is tall. It's about proportions. Someone 5' with a 30" waist is going to look much heavier than someone who is 5'10" with the same waist measurement.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 12/09/2022 01:14

Im 5’6” and size 14 and I feel overweight.

I always was slim so find it hard being this size but struggle to do anything about it.

MooseBreath · 12/09/2022 08:47

I'm 5'2 and a 12-14, and am only slightly overweight. My chest is a 34G, so I need to wear a 14, otherwise the top won't go on, but the waist is always baggy and massive on me. For trousers, I have next to no fat on my bum or legs (I am a tap dancer and have a lot of muscle), but in order for jeans to get past my thighs, I need a 12 that eternally need to be hemmed for length.

Body type is a huge factor and most shops don't sell for people with a curvy figure.

Darbs76 · 12/09/2022 08:48

I’m 5ft 1 and if I needed a size 14 then yes I’d be overweight

Musti · 12/09/2022 08:49

I’m 5’ 6 and a size 14 and overweight. Should be a size 10/12 for my height.

Rinatinabina · 12/09/2022 09:02

I’m 5ft 2in, a size 14 was 8lbs overweight at about 10st 4lbs (I’m a lot fatter now).

Rinatinabina · 12/09/2022 09:03

That was trousers 20 years ago, was a size ten on top.
