Is a size 14 viewed as overweight?

Just reading online that uk size 16 is the average size of a uk woman right now. Im a size 14 and 5ft 3 so always felt overweight anyway but in reality would you view someone as a size 14 overweight? For me anyone who can fit into a size 10 would be considered slim although I know clothes sizes come up different depending on shop. Just curious what dress size people on here buy and if they consider themselves overweight.

I'm size 12-14 (always 14 in bottoms) but I'm 5ft 9. I weigh 11 stone 9 so not overweight (BMI 24). Even when I was lighter at 10 stone 10 I was always a size 14 in trousers. I carry my weight on my bottom and thighs.

Depends on other factors

One of my friends is a size 14, but is 6ft 2 and has a BMI under 25 so isn't overweight

But for the majority of women, they will be overweight when at a 14

I'm obese at a size 14 and am 5ft 6!

That’s so weird. I’m same height and I was a size 14 pre kids. My BMI hovered between 24.8 (so just in the healthy range) and 26 at that size.

SmallestInTheClass · 11/09/2022 13:33

Yes, unless you've pretty tall in which case it could be perfectly healthy.

Gingerwarthog · 11/09/2022 13:33

I'm tall but carry weight on my stomach, am pretty much straight up and down and have small wrists and ankles.
I would look big if I was a size 14. My friend is small, curvy and a size 14 and looks great.
We're all different and you have to take into account your frame.

FinallyHere · 11/09/2022 13:34

Yes I’m going to stop buying cheese because if it’s in the house I can’t resist it it’s like my comfort food.

I've had really good results from eating the low carb way, on MN. I've got rid of the sweet tooth which used to sabotage me all.the.time Link below to the latest thread, there is a link to the spreadsheet which had loads of different tabs including the rules which set out how it all works.

Lots of really supportive and knowledgable people happy to answer any questions. The first two weeks is ultra strict, to loosen the gold sugar has over many people.

It's such a pleasure enjoying eating good food without that terrible rollercoaster of blood sugar highs and lows. Would be good to see you on that thread.

Hope you find what you need to eat well.

Yes I would. I'm a size 12 and over weight. I need to be an 8-10 for my height.

TheKeatingFive · 11/09/2022 13:38

I'm 5,1 so it definitely would be for me.

Heck I'm a size 10 now and borderline overweight (BMI 25/26) so god knows what my bmi would be at a size 14.

HikingBoots · 11/09/2022 13:39

I'm 5ft4 and a size 10 and I consider myself slim, fit and healthy. Although, at my height, even just gaining one or two pounds makes me feel frumpy and chubby.
Yes if I were a size 14 I'd look fat.

Fairislefandango · 11/09/2022 13:41

Imo it's a good idea to concentrate on what you should eat, even more than on what you shouldn't eat. Psychologically it feels more positive and less like just depriving yourself. Plus if you eat filling meals made out of good ingredients and actually get the nutrition you need, it will be a bit easier to resist the processed crap and sugar.

I'm 5'6" a size 14. I'm a bit overweight.

Carpy88999 · 11/09/2022 13:41

Clothes size is irrelevant. Look in the mirror and you'll have the answer.

MrsJBaptiste · 11/09/2022 13:45

I'm 5ft 9 and weight 10st 10 (although ideally would be 10st 7) and am a 10-12 depending on the shop.

Over 11 stones and I'd be a size 14 and would want to lose a few pounds.

CactusBlossom · 11/09/2022 13:47

Ilovemycatalot · 11/09/2022 10:38

Did the BMI calculator thing and I was considered obese. Just upset me a bit guess I’m looking for reassurance but yeah I’m definitely overweight by at least a couple of stone.

Health is more important than dress size. Dress sizes vary between brands - and over the years. My mum had some patterns from WWII and the "larger sizes" are now "average". So much depends on other factors: height, nutrition, activity... An athlete might weigh more but have little body fat. I believe tennis champion Margaret Court had to have dresses specially made as the muscles on her serving arm were so well developed (larger than the other side). It is possible to be too thin. Weight-bearing exercise is important as that helps guard against osteoporosis.

Is a size 14 viewed as overweight?
DeeCeeCherry · 11/09/2022 13:49

It would be viewed as overweight I guess.

Im 5ft6 size 14. Vegetarian. I eat well, and leave 12 hours minimum between meals as eating well = I dont get hungry/crave sugar and snacks at all, or have a big bloated stomach. I lift weights daily and Im toned.

I dont want to go below size 14 thanks. It doesnt suit me, Ive always looked better at this weight. Face & body. We're all different. So im overweight I guess but happy, no food police/food angst woes

Doubledenimrocks · 11/09/2022 13:52

I'm 5ft 6 and a size 10. My BMI is healthy but I am broad (from the side I look very slim but from on front or back I look big. If I were a 14 I would be very definitely overweight.

Do you really want to hurt me?

Do you really want to make me cry?

TheOrigRights · 11/09/2022 14:05

I have never been a size 14 so I don't know what I'd weigh to be that size, but even if I was still within the healthy BMI range, I'm pretty sure I would look too heavy and it would not be a healthy weight for me. I'm tall and slim, always have been. Unless I did loads of muscle building exercises, the extra size/weight would be in the form of fat. No thanks!

lugeforlife · 11/09/2022 14:12

My mum is 5 ft 1 and has been a size 14 for years. She weighs (and has done since she was 18) between 9 and 9 and a half stone which I think is about bmi 23/24? She has an incredibly broad back - like a little tortoise.

I am overweight at a 14 (am 5ft 3) but not obese. Obese for me is just over 12 stone which very roughly equates to a 16 for my shape.

Even at a 16 though it's 16 because of legs and arse. Waist is usually good size smaller.

CC1991 · 11/09/2022 14:14

I'm just over 5 foot and normally wear a size 8 or 6 on top and an 8 or 10 on the bottom. Not sure what my BMI is, but I'm pretty much bang-on 8 stone or 50kg. I've noticed that H&M and Superdry have 'inflated' their sizes so that I'm now an XXS in H&M tops (was an S five years ago) and too small for almost any tops from Superdry - I recently had to send some XXS tops back to them for being too big!

Idontknowwhatto · 11/09/2022 14:16

5 foot 4 here and any time I have been a size 14 I was definitely overweight. Rolls of fat everywhere, thighs rubbing together leaving painful sores, legs and arms disproportionately big, double chin(s), very round face. Haven't read the full thread but see there are multiple pages so hopefully I haven't missed much.

Mammyloveswine · 11/09/2022 14:29

I'm a 14 and definitely overweight..I have at least 3 stone to lose...

I have always been a size 10 (even an 8) my entire life so to have whacked on 3 stone over covid and not lost it has been a shock!

It has gone hand in hand with a depression/anxiety diagnosis which tbf is much improved!

Ive just started back at the gym and started logging my cals on my fitness pal.

SavoirFlair · 11/09/2022 15:08

There is a mental side to weight loss which just seems to bypass lots of Brits .

the number of folk who post on threads “people who have money and the right lifestyle are the ones who stay slim” I find hugely frustrating

deedledeedledum · 11/09/2022 15:44

@Kennykenkencat I'm confused by people saying 'old 14 vs today" and then citing Marilyn. Why is anyone today thinking of sizes as they were 60 years ago? We have change height and shape so much in the past 60 years. Someone who was a size 8 then was small. Someone who is a size 8 now is also small. No one is a size 8 today looking like they are a little dumpy are they

That mental side is greatly aided by not having to worry about money and other issues.

diamondpony80 · 11/09/2022 17:39

I'm 5ft 9 and would be overweight at size 14 so I'd imagine most people would be overweight at size 14. Maybe a bit taller and you might just squeeze into a healthy weight range.

Marilyn Monroe was an old size 14 to day she would probably be a size 10
Size 10 today isn’t exactly an unpopular size.
I don’t see only older skinny women buying that size.

The only reason Dd doesn’t buy size 4 or size 6 clothes in the adult section is because they don’t make clothes for her height and leg length ( but they do in the children’s section)
