How do you justify the royals ?

So their ancestors were essentially the biggest bullies and managed to get what they could and have now passed it on.

They're people, just like us, but get to 'rule' over us.

How do you justify this ? It's just so wrong and outdated. Please tell me your reasons why you Support this, I am genuinely interested in whether I can change my mind about it all.

What would Alistair Bruce do without the Royals - he knows EVERYTHING and is AMAZING

SheepOnTheBridge · 10/09/2022 11:33

I think OBEs and MBEs etc should be abolished - what’s the point

Nishky32 · 10/09/2022 11:34

Genuinely interested in changing your mind. Course you are. Course it’s not a goady thread.

if you look at the royal family topic there is lots of debate there, intelligent and otherwise. You could read up and get lots of information on opposing views

PawPrintsInMyPansies · 10/09/2022 11:35

OFFOD.

PawPrintsInMyPansies · 10/09/2022 11:35

Gah, ODFOD

KindOfInvisible · 10/09/2022 11:36

Ah the old "genuinely interested" poster...

mountainsunsets · 10/09/2022 11:38

Ah, yet another goady thread about the Royal Family. What a surprise.

sst1234 · 10/09/2022 11:38

It’s easy to justify when you don’t live in the past and live in the reality of today. You start to not give this amount of disproportionate headspace to people that have no impact on you today, unless of course you tell us you have personally been harmed by one of the Royal Family.

Let go of your anger and resentment. It’s not healthy.

Acheyknees · 10/09/2022 11:40

Just watching the huge crowds in London. Isn't it lovely

unicormb · 10/09/2022 11:40

I don't justify them. It's undemocratic to have an unelected head of state.

Hbh17 · 10/09/2022 11:42

The royal family have the "soft power" to convene and influence, and to support charitable causes.
They are above and apart from party politics.
The business of the state can continue seamlessly and there is no wrangling and controversy about electing a new Head of State.
They serve us, the people.
This week has made me ever more proud and grateful that we have a monarchy.

'They serve us, the people.' - How?

Branleuse · 10/09/2022 11:45

I dont understand it either OP. Theyre just posh Kardashians to me. I dont get this level of hierarchy. I get that people loved the queen, but i cannot see any good reason to keep the rest of it up now, and i resent the amount of attention and money that goes on this one rich family.

StripeyDeckchair · 10/09/2022 11:45

I think that there needs to be an update around language etc

But the alternative is a president and that's not always successful & has it limitations and problems.

Goady 😂 fml, is anything not ‘goady’ on here now?

What would you say it was then - would be really interested in your opinion. Bet it is GREAT

maddiemookins16mum · 10/09/2022 11:51

I can’t justify them, I really can’t. But I like them (and wouldn’t want many parts of their lives). It is what it is. It also doesn’t make a huge difference to my every day life.

Georgeskitchen · 10/09/2022 11:53

Why should our centuries old tradition be abolished,? I agree it needs slimming down drastically, something Her Majesty's has been quietly doing for a few years. Charles has made it clear he will swing the axe ( metaphorically of course) but our Royal family is famous around the world, people flock here for the pomp and ceremony, Trooping the colour etc, The palaces and everything (although I agree they don't need so many palaces, castles etc) we are an island steeped in history not all if it good I agree but let us not forget that we are far from the only nation who had an empire.
So just leave our RF alone and let us enjoy the attention and the respect they bring

WeAreOnTheRoadToNowhere · 10/09/2022 11:53

I'm no royalist but most of our PMs I would be horrified at the thought of them as presidents
So a non powerful head of state saved me from having to watch the likes of BJ swan around as a president
That's my only plus point

Why should they get to keep ruling for centuries to come, just because they were born into it? What a life they have. God save the king ! Why just the king ? What about the rest ? Is his life worth more than someone else's life, that we feel we need to bestow such blessing on him ?

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate them or anything and I am not hugely anti royal. But just watching them the last few days. What a life ! It's just mad.

You know it’s not the dark ages don’t you? They won’t whip you while you’re toiling your tithed strip of land to eek a living? They won’t chop off your head if you don’t bow to them?

They’re just a figure head with a unique symbolic constitutional role. I’d rather have this lot with their baubles and shiny gold carriages and a 1000 year back story than some ‘elected’ head of state which just makes us another grey, boring republic. Worthy but dull.

The pomp and gold carriages is what makes us irrationally proud, gives a feel good flag waving day when there is royal wedding and gives us global soft power.

There really isn’t more to it than that. You wouldn’t save much money getting rid of it but as a nation we’d be poorer spiritually and ceremonially.

Oh dear.

Two words. President Thatcher.
But you're not really interested in being convinced, because your opinions are based on fact-free selective emotionalised bs

Mamamia7962 · 10/09/2022 12:06

slippe - Would you want that life though? I certainly wouldn't. No amount of money makes up for the loss of freedom in my view.
