No, they don’t. Where do you work now?

I’m guessing you’re retired, since you’re so reluctant to say.

I’m quite a few years off retirement unfortunately.

I’m an ex teacher and now work in a hospital. I do not want to say what I do as it’s quite niche and may be outing.

You have no issues getting time off if the schools are closed.
So your hysteria over childcare was completely unnecessary and false.

Hospital staff like myself may struggle more but legally employers must give you time off for exceptional circumstances, which this would be if the schools are closed due to the Queens funeral.

cinnamonbiscuit · 09/09/2022 22:24

I work in a cathedral and we were told today that we will be putting on a county memorial service on Sunday 18th, ‘the eve of the funeral’ is how it was described. No idea how they know this before it’s been announced!

Ponoka7 · 09/09/2022 22:26

Medical appointments, planned admissions/surgery etc should definitely not be cancelled. I'm attending an hospital appointment on that day with a 79 year old neighbour because he seems to have been diagnosed with bladder cancer but can't remember. I know a child whose been waiting two years to get their tonsils out etc etc. We are playing catch up as it is and it's going to be a tough winter for the NHS. Public transport also shouldn't be cut down on. My DD and many who work in the same hospital have had all of their disposal income go on taxis and had to walk home after a long, busy shift, during the month long bus strike. Sunday service on a lot of routes means no service.

Twiglets1 · 09/09/2022 22:26

It sounds like it will be Monday 19th. Banks will be closed, ( though they won’t call it a bank holiday), schools will be closed, maybe even supermarkets will be closed (possibly at discretion of individuals companies like some close Boxing day while others open). Council workers will have the day off, transport workers etc.
Hospitals will have to stay open like they do even on Christmas Day. Frontline NHS staff who have to come in I expect will get a day off in lieu while lots of admin staff won’t come in unless absolutely necessary.

Butterflytown · 09/09/2022 22:26

Our infant school (non religious) have emailed to say they’re staying open throughout the mourning period including the expected date of the funeral, Monday 19th. The fact they’ve already said that makes me think (hope) they won’t change their minds and have already thought about it/ been given guidance.

I think whether schools should close for the funeral must have been considered as part of the planning, so hopefully it can be clarified quickly.

So what if you were retired. I'm 51 and retired and certainly won't be apologising to bitter teachers. It's people like that, that made me leave education. Lefties, full of their own self importance, always under the guise of being caring.

No they don’t. Where is it you work? Think hard now!

@Pumperthepumper yes they do.

If they are arsey or refuse then contact your union.

Where do you work? Are you part of a union?

They have to give you the time off to arrange emergency childcare. They don't have to pay you for it.

jcyclops · 09/09/2022 22:27

I don't know when the funeral is, but the TV coverage starts Sunday 11th and goes on until Thursday 22nd.

No, i do - I can’t take time off for childcare. I am not entitled to time off due to childcare. So your hysterical lies are just that: lies.

Will you get paid if your kids school is closed and you have to take time off for childcare? In your super-identify role as an NHS cleaner?

You don’t have to apologise. You just have to appreciate that it’s not as simple as ‘you want it so you’ve got it’. Because otherwise you look like an idiot.

My DCs school has said the same and are adamant that they’re staying open but I do wonder how much say they actually do have, as they aren’t allowed to stay open on a bank holiday.

IrishladyNE · 09/09/2022 22:31

Dear me, everyone argues about everything all the of time. It’s quite comical really. I’m sure employers will be sympathetic if the school closes and make allowances. Most workplaces will give the people the day off. It will be fine. I used to get myself in a right state about school closing during Covid’s it was nightmare. This is just a day that was months at a time.

RibenaBiscuits · 09/09/2022 22:31

I have a court hearing scheduled for Monday 19th that I've been waiting around 2 years for because of various delays. I have been living in a constant state of anxiety waiting for this hearing but finally thought I was at the finish line. My solicitor informed me that if the funeral takes place on Monday the courts will close, the hearing cancelled and I'll have to wait - potentially months - for a new date. I just want to cry.

Pumperthepumper · 09/09/2022 22:31

Culldesack · 09/09/2022 22:23

My goodness, you're going to go into melt down, if you are expected to celebrate the Queen's history with your students. Frightening but glad you've warned us you're in the profession.

I’m not expected to. I’d happily celebrate her achievements and at the same time point out how she was able to do them.

Not if you are a teacher in a maintained school in England you dont.

Well no, I'm in Scotland, as is the poster I was replying to.

PenguinMan · 09/09/2022 22:35

In your super-identify role as an NHS cleaner?

@Pumperthepumper What a rude thing to say! so what if I was a cleaner?

Do you think that as a teacher you are above a cleaner?

Before I was a teacher I worked as a cleaner and there’s no way I thought I was a better person once I became a teacher.

Looking down your nose at cleaners just proves what type of person you are.

You’ll be fine you don’t need to have time off if schools are closed as you will not be in work.
So I don’t know why you’re acting like you can’t have time off if the schools are closed for the funeral - because you’ll already have time off!!

But yes employers must give you time off for exceptional circumstances like emergency childcare.

What union are you with?

MadeWithCare · 09/09/2022 22:27

This. At my Trust these emergency leave days are paid, but they don't legally have to be. They are also only for use in an unforeseen emergency, so where a child is ill, or normal childcare arrangements breakdown unexpectedly, and are to give to time to make other arrangements. As presumably the funeral date and any school closures will be announced about a week in advance where I work this wouldn't count as an emergency as its known about in advance.

I didn’t say anything about the rank of cleaners, that’s all on you. You’re projecting a lot.

Do you get paid childcare leave as an NHS cleaner? No, you don’t.

We're a mai trained school and will do as we're told. If we're not instructed to close we'll stay open.

I know academies have more autonomy, but good luck to any head who tries to stay open if "everyone" else is closing.

But it doesn't have to be paid which may be a problem for many parents, and this situation might not actually be classed as an emergency as its known about in advance (albeit only a week or so in advance)

@RibenaBiscuits not to stress you out any more than you already are.

But I know someone who was waiting for a court date and due to the barristers being on and off of strike this has been delayed.

Has your solicitor spoken to you about the strikes and if you’ll be affected?

I believe the court date can still go ahead but you have to represent yourself if you’re the defendant (which I wouldn’t personally do).
