"Employers have to give you time off for childcare."

Not paid they don't.

To think the queen gave a life time of service to a country full of heartless people.

Agree, she only passed yesterday

The world has just been through a pandemic when the whole country shut down with a days notice.

She gave 70 years of her life for this country. You can give a day

No they don’t. Where is it you work? Think hard now!

@Pumperthepumper yes they do.

If they are arsey or refuse then contact your union.

Where do you work? Are you part of a union?

DillDanding · 09/09/2022 22:05

I really hope it’s on the Saturday. Purely because we all have dentist appointments on the Monday. 😆

I work for a local authority (I’m a teacher) and I promise you, they don’t have to give you time off for childcare. You’re massively out of touch. Where is it you work? You still haven’t said.

Yes. It’s really ‘me me me’ to want a decent standard of living, affordable housing and a fit for purpose NHS. Fucking selfish tax paying idiots. They should have just all been born into a hereditary monarchy like she was ⭐️

PenguinMan · 09/09/2022 22:09

@Pumperthepumper so you’ll be fine then as you’ll have the day off too if the schools are closed, so what’s with the hysteria?

As an ex teacher I know that it’s hard getting time off but they do have to let you have time off for childcare in exceptional circumstances which I have needed to request.

No - they don’t have to give me a day off for childcare. It’s not ‘hysteria’ (you misogynist), it’s pragmatism. Employers do not have to give time off for childcare. Where do you work now?

What has any of this got to do with having a bank holiday Monday?

People can’t afford it.

If your school has refused then go to your union (and find a new school).

MistressIggi · 09/09/2022 22:13

As a teacher I can get 5 days a year for emergency childcare. That would normally be for sickness (cheers, covid) but I've also had to use to when nurseries shut due to heavy snow.

I feel sorry for your students. How brainwashed they must be. The usual aggressive lefty. Politics has naff all to do with this thread.

Thanks, I’ll pass that on to them. They’re just as important as the Queen so absolutely should be entitled to the same standard of living.

Is it that difficult to understand that if one person is having child care issues the business can cope, if every parent is having a childcare issues business will not be able to function.

And saying 'Union ' tells me all I need to know.

Not if you are a teacher in a maintained school in England you dont.

Why the political and economical rant? This isn't about affordability, cost of living etc. This is about complaining about lives being affected, for one day. Take your aggression somewhere else.

I need to give ten days notice to book a days holiday from work. Public service role so will be open. If funeral on a week day school will close. I'm sure lots of people are in the same boat.

I would hope that employers will be understanding under the circumstances.

It’s not one day though. If people don’t get paid for a day it has a knock-on effect. Regardless of how many years of handouts the Queen got from the general public by luck of birth.

DancingBudgie · 09/09/2022 22:21

Surtsey · 09/09/2022 19:12

The most important head of state in the world has died, and they have to arrange the funeral plus security, flights and accommodation for all the hundreds of kings, queens, presidents and prime ministers who will flying here from all over the globe, and you want to know the date of the funeral right now because you need to make plans?

Strewth.

There's 775 rooms at Buckingham palace to choose from. It's not as though they're trying to book them into the nearest Travelodge.

MistressIggi · 09/09/2022 22:22

Hmm, just had a look at local Tesco c&c and they have nothing available next Saturday, Sunday or Monday. Looks like they are hedging their bets!

My goodness, you're going to go into melt down, if you are expected to celebrate the Queen's history with your students. Frightening but glad you've warned us you're in the profession.

BirdyWoof · 09/09/2022 22:23

A severe lack of resilience in these threads.

Firstly, she has been dead one day. I’m yet to see a funeral organised within a day for your average Joe, so I think it’s bonkers to expect a date to be finalised for the Queen’s funeral.

Secondly, instead of taking to Mumsnet to complain about it, why don’t you spend that time figuring out a solutions?

Life is full of unexpected twists and turns, shit happens sometimes. You have to figure it out. Like what you have to do for every other single bank holiday, sickness, strike and school training days.

And as an aside, it would be fantastic if NHS workers would stop prefacing every single life complaint with “I’m an NHS worker”. It’s almost as if it’s your entire identity and personality trait at this point. Lots of people have jobs that work unsociable, long hours, but you don’t see them crying about it online. You chose the job, you knew what downsides it came with, and you chose to have children. Those are all your choices. There are plenty of other jobs out there.
