I know it's not reasonable to kill a robin but wtf do I do?

I have a robin who thinks it lives in my house. If I open any of the windows at all, it flies in and then (if I am in, which I am a lot because I wfh) it panics and flies around shitting everywhere. I am so so so over it. What do I do? I love fresh air and like having my windows, but it just comes straight in and I keep finding bird poo all over the place and I have a one and a three year old and I don't want crap all over the place. This morning, I caught it and chucked it out - and I actually just want to kill it now. I know it sounds silly, but I hate having random bird poo everywhere (it stains the carpets, it's GROSS). Is there anyway of humanely convincing it that it doesn't live here? (Yes, I've googled and I know about the fact that it's a sign of approaching death, which doesn't improve my mood.)

Sorry OP but this just made me laugh a lot. I am truly sorry for your despair though. Maybe try a realistic cat scarecrow thing?

ThatThingOverThere · 09/09/2022 13:55

I’ve no advice, but I have the same issue with a bloody massive seagull. I wouldn’t kill him, but he now owes me about 60 quid in light fixtures.

ThatThingOverThere · 09/09/2022 13:57

He also sits right outside my window and watches me watch tv in the evening. Creepy fucker.

ClumpingBambooIsALie · 09/09/2022 13:43

I mean, quite literally, don't kill the robin.

😂😂

This, I laughed way too much at........

You are going to need more than a cd for this one......

It sounds like a bloody stalker!

😃

If a seagull wanted my house I'd probably just move out. Have you seen what they are like when all they want is your chips??? 😱

howdidigethere · 09/09/2022 14:13

The robin sounds like a loveable rogue to me.

Pigeons now, don't get me started on pigeons.

anotherpotoftea · 09/09/2022 14:28

Following in the hope of robin photos.

Ohpaella · 09/09/2022 14:31

You sound unhinged op.

Ohpaella · 09/09/2022 14:31

Why don’t you all rub your hands in glee for the day we have no birds left. Miserable lot.

Murderous bastards....

I have footage (from my bedroom window) of one murdering the other. And it didn't end there..... A plain dead mate wasn't good enough, no no, it had to go and peck it to pieces too.

It was horrid!

@PlumPudd 😂😂😂😂proper belly laughed at your solutions
Sorry op no suggestions but has someone recently died in your family because honestly whenever someone has died there is always a robin nearby or one visits at quite emotional times for me!

takingmytimeonmyride · 09/09/2022 14:44

Obviously you are the CF living in the robin's house. You need to get out, make a nest in the garden and live there and let the robin live in peace in his house.

We have silhouettes of falcons on some windows! Not because we have a robin visitor, but to stop birds killing themselves, by flying into the windows!

Try the RSPB website?

Sorry to hijack the thread, but does that actually work?

(I have a suicidal bird problem myself)

WiddlinDiddlin · 09/09/2022 14:48

I'd just shut or mesh the windows... certainly doesn't cost hundreds or have to look awful but it may take a few weeks for Mr or Mrs Robin to realise they can't come in.

It is most likely the reflections leading them to think theres another robin they must chase off..

I wouldn't bank on it dying of old age any time soon, the average lifespan of a robin may be a year... but thats because so so many die very young. If they survive that first year, they can live a decade or more!

user1471541711 · 09/09/2022 14:59

It is illegal to kill any bird so just get some screening or a sparrow hawk silhouette or put some meal worms away from your house. They
love them.
If you put it in a box and drive it a few miles away, it will be killed by the local robins there and if it has young chicks they will starve.
be nice to the robin!
take it’s photo and make some Christmas cards

I dunno about anyone else, but I'm a birdlover having a bit of a joke commiserating about some of the less-convenient-for-humans behaviours of birds Hmm Lots of people have come up with humane suggestions (NOT including exile to strange lands! though I suspect those suggesting that didn't realise it's inhumane, like those who relocate wild rats and think they're doing a nice thing), while also sympathising with the generally problematic nature of wild flying shitting things that can't resist paying an indoor visit.

Maybe get a cage for it and let it be a pet?

I hate caging bird but maybe this one is used to a life of captivity.

no not a good idea

Thelnebriati · 09/09/2022 15:08

@Chouetted It does work as long as they can see it, its best to have them on the outside of the glass so it isn't hidden by glare. Its also better to have a dark silhouette against a light background.

Agree that it has seemed to work for me also. Get a bird of prey silhouette/s though, not hummingbird or swift or some such.

I've not had a crashed bird since I put up my stickers, maybe 5 years ago? I put 3 up, on the windows that were flown into before.

thunderhoney · 09/09/2022 15:31

I had a crow moping around our garden last summer, looked like it’s wing was broken. I fed it and it just stayed in our garden after that. This summer the crow brought two crow babies, so now all three of them think they live here. They stare through the window when they want food, and sometimes they bring me those silvery holders for tea lights, nicely flattened and pecked on. Once I got a shiny weber bbq plaque and one time even a stainless steel small bowl. I use the bowl for my cat now, so it came in handy! I really hope she doesn’t bring more kids next year.

YesitsBess · 09/09/2022 15:54

I’m fucking howling at the seagull. I had no idea so many mumsnetters had bird stalkers.
