Time to abolish the BBC?

The queen has died - fine; express sypmathy for the family etc - but I do not need to be told the same news and potted history of her live on repeat 24/7 - on every single radio station.
Makes you realice what a stranglehold monopoly BBC has on UK radio.
But if anyone can reccomend a decent UK tald radion station that is not obsessed with tellilng me that the queen has died 100 times an hour, much appreciated.

the issue with the bbc, or at least one of them is its a political machine, im just not sure who is actually driving it, it cant be Davie hes too thick

Person18885 · 09/09/2022 09:31

they publish articles slamming themselves, its all a bit like alphabet soup

PenguinMan · 09/09/2022 09:39

Most TVs and radios have an OFF button.

Why not press it.

How do some people have so much free time on their hands where they can just watch TV and listen to the radio all day!

Oh do get over yourself! I'm in NZ and we've had constant coverage on TV all day, and it looks set to continue for most of the night. I can choose to watch it or not - as can you.

My son in NYC said everyone he knew was glued to it. You're right. It's not just this country and not just this time zone.

And if the state broadcaster can't do it, who can?

So op, YABVU, although I would be happy to see the back of Nicholas Witchell.

Couldn't agree more OP!

I get it's massive news but we aren't even 24 hours in and there isn't anything new to say. Its so repetitive and I've worked that out whilst actively trying to avoid it.

I find it really weird.

It's especially cringy watching the reporters try to speak in 'sad' voices. Why? It bizarre.

IDidntKnowItWasAParty · 09/09/2022 10:15

Are you unable to access non-BBC radio stations for some reason OP? There are loads. YABVU

Time to abolish the monarchy

I find it weird that you keep watching it.

I’ve not seen any television reports as I’ve simply not watched them.

EmzyEmz · 09/09/2022 10:37

Other channels exist, it's not 1997 anymore too , I remember when Diana died and I was around 14 then. Every radio station was playing sad songs, kids TV channels such as Nickelodeon ran straplines at the bottom telling us kids to switch to a news channel. Just pick up a book or go for a walk , you've got access to a multitude of TV streaming services too if you want to sit on your bum all day, I don't see the problem

Getoff · 09/09/2022 11:01

This is always an issue with breaking news of big events. It's particularly bad this time, when I looked last night even most of the foreign news channels (CNN, France 24, Al Jazeera) were stuck on the same issue. Only NHK was talking about something else.

The people saying other channels exist are wrong, if what you want is news.

The people saying this is sensible and appropriate are silly. By all means dedicate one channel to repeating the same facts over and over, so different people can catch up at different times. But having virtually every channel focus on the issue, when there's nothing new to hear after you watched any one of them for 15 minutes, is stupid.

It's not disrespectful or minimising an event to not want to watch coverage for longer than it takes to tell you everything there is to know about it.

Watercoloursky · 09/09/2022 11:21

To be fair, it's not just the Beeb - we've got LBC playing in the office (i.e. commercial radio) and it's all-Queen all-the-time on there too.

Who me or Nicholas Witchell?

I'm agnostic but I do enjoy moments of history.

N. Witchell is getting increasingly indistinguishable from a Galapagos tortoise of mature years.

I’m sick of these whiny petulant rants. It’s 2022 not 1922, there are lots of options to listen to radio who won’t be mentioning the death of the Queen on repeat . There’s this think called the internet, I believe you may familiar with it, since you are posting.

itsgettingweird · 09/09/2022 16:17

Have some respect for people who couldn't care less

Surely they can pick up a remote and change channel?

This. There are more podcasts than you could listen to if you lived to be 100. Check some of those out.
