Time to abolish the BBC?

The queen has died - fine; express sypmathy for the family etc - but I do not need to be told the same news and potted history of her live on repeat 24/7 - on every single radio station.
Makes you realice what a stranglehold monopoly BBC has on UK radio.
But if anyone can reccomend a decent UK tald radion station that is not obsessed with tellilng me that the queen has died 100 times an hour, much appreciated.

how can it be 24/7 if its been less than 24 hours?

Ah you are here as well as your own thread, what is wrong with you !

DorritLittle · 09/09/2022 08:21

Not sure what you expected turning on Radio 4 to be honest. It's almost as though you want to be annoyed!

PerfectlyPreservedQuagaarWarrior · 09/09/2022 08:21

Honestly, I think a big part of the reason for the OTT tone of the coverage is specifically because they're conscious of the right wing wanting to defund them and don't want to give them an excuse to call them disrespectful, woke etc etc. They've essentially defenestrated themselves in recent years as a response to that.

Readaboutyourself · 09/09/2022 08:21

Never. I’d watch Huw Edwards present drying paint.

I reckon we've a good fortnight of crywanking ahead of us. We don't really watch TV news in this house but I might try and come up with some kind of bingo game.

Not yet

onlythreenow · 09/09/2022 08:24

Oh do get over yourself! I'm in NZ and we've had constant coverage on TV all day, and it looks set to continue for most of the night. I can choose to watch it or not - as can you.

Inappropriate - our Queen has just died! Have some respect!

Have some respect for people who couldn't care less

Wonnle · 09/09/2022 08:25

Have some respect for people who couldn't care less

The demands for respect primarily go one way. Honestly, a lot of people need to learn that if they want a safe space where they're not confronted with differing opinions about a quite controversial figure, AIBU isn't it.

Bluebellsand · 09/09/2022 08:28

*Look out the window
*Listen to the rain
*Concentrate on the road (if driving)
*See how beautiful/ rundown of your immediate environment/ surroundings.
*Reminisce of better days
*Do some work and actual concentrate on it
*Write a story

You dont have to listen to bbc, there is so much choice.

id just say that the internet isnt a safe place period

ThinWomansBrain · 09/09/2022 08:29

@Person18885 - it went on for about a week with Prince Philip - I expect this will be the same; if it ends some time today, great.

And for those assuming I watch daytime TV all day - I don't watch TV at all.
I enjoy listening to an intelligent update on world affairs, not a constant regurgitation of the same person's life, or why Dorris from Harrow has chosen to stand outsige buckingham palace. It's news, yes - but having had wall to wall coverage, why not restrict it to news bulleteins, a single station dedicated to wall to wall coverage if anyone wants that?

True. Best people stay off it entirely if they feel the need not to be exposed to anything they don't consider 'respectful' because honestly, there's plenty worse on social media.

Person18885 · 09/09/2022 08:34

OP i understand what you mean, i was listening to capital through the night and it was the same news every 5 minutes, i do think it should only be the bbc that airs this stuff and not every single broadcaster

AverageJoan · 09/09/2022 08:38

Iheartmykyndle · 09/09/2022 07:09

Cbeebies is on as normal, maybe you could watch that.

😂👏🏻

DorchaAndLouis · 09/09/2022 08:40

YABU if you've been sitting in front of the TV watching BBC for hours on end.
Of course they're bound to keep recapping when an event of such significance has happened.
This means that people can turn on the TV, get the latest info, then turn it off.
Not sit and watch it over and over again, unless they want to.

MarshaBradyo · 09/09/2022 08:41

I don’t want it abolished but it is wall to wall if you listen to certain radio stations

With PP radio 6 did down beat music for days too, maybe the same

Rapidtango · 09/09/2022 08:43

You could always have a look at BBC sounds - there are thousands of hours of drama, documentary, comedy, science, crime etc etc.

All these 'edgy', cool republican types complaining about the coverage, the protocol has been in place for decades, it'll last about ten days, there's plenty of other broadcast material available, if you don't have the nouse to find it, that's on you.

Threads like this are as ubiquitous as the news about the Queen's death, and tbh far more boring and prosaic.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 09/09/2022 08:44

Perhaps you could play an LP or a cassette tape if you are feeling modern

entropynow · 09/09/2022 08:44

BonesOfWhatYouBelieve · 09/09/2022 07:06

Makes you realice what a stranglehold monopoly BBC has on UK radio.

There are absolutely loads of non-bbc radio stations though.

Exactly. It only makes you "realise" ( if like OP you don't usually bother to think) you have a choice not to listen.
