Time to abolish the BBC?

ThinWomansBrain · 09/09/2022 06:56

The queen has died - fine; express sypmathy for the family etc - but I do not need to be told the same news and potted history of her live on repeat 24/7 - on every single radio station.
Makes you realice what a stranglehold monopoly BBC has on UK radio.
But if anyone can reccomend a decent UK tald radion station that is not obsessed with tellilng me that the queen has died 100 times an hour, much appreciated.

OP posts:

it is a big deal op

If you’d flicked through the main channels, you’d have noticed they were all the same except those that just showed a blank screen. This has been synchronised and had been planned for years.

^^this. It's planned, rehearsed and Co-ordinated coverage of a national event. The BBC, as with most other mainstream media channels, will have no choice but to follow protocol on this. I'm not keen on wall to wall coverage either but I'll dip in and out as I see fit and will be watching Netflix a lot. As a pp said, 10 days is not much to ask for a lifetime's service, even if you're not a royalist.

NotSorry · 09/09/2022 07:26

When I was a kid we only had bbc1, bbc2 and itv - so much more choice these days, I’m sure you can avoid it

eighteenmonthstogo · 09/09/2022 07:28

Yeah great idea OP .. abolish one of the only institutions that can hold government (not the Tories or labour but GOVT ) to account. ! Tremendous idea ... who do you fancy flogging it off to ? Murdoch or Branson ? They would snap it up as it has a World wide reputation for quality. And as such are rightly providing detailed coverage of one of the most significant events in our history.

No no OP I'm with you. Let's abolish all our great institutions and privatise everything. After all it's proved so fabulous for the Gas, Water, Electric, Rail and Post office ... oh wait ... I may have got that wrong . It's proved GREAT for the shareholders and directors but completely fucked the country ... oh well. Profit is King.

If you don't like it. Here's a plan. Get up. Turn off the TV and go and do something constructive with your time.

Thisisa · 09/09/2022 07:29

I agree OP.

There is a difference between not mentioning it at all and mentioning it constantly.

A little bit of acknowledgement that other things are happening would be good.

But I didn’t like the ghoulish live updates either.

georgarina · 09/09/2022 07:32

The UK's longest-reigning monarch died yesterday. What are you expecting, a passing mention?

Turn on Spotify.

ChessieFL · 09/09/2022 07:34

This is a big historical event and if the BBC weren’t covering it they would be criticised!

Watch BBC2, that’s normal programming.

The other main channels are also wall to wall Queen, are you going to abolish them too?

Darbs76 · 09/09/2022 07:36

I’ve seen so many similar posts. Switch off your TV, no-one is forcing you to watch it, and the choice of TV viewing now is endless. Have some respect, she’s not even been dead 24hrs

Snowiscold · 09/09/2022 07:37

It’s protocol and will have been decided long ago. They might not have much choice in the matter.

CornishGem1975 · 09/09/2022 07:37

You do realise you don't HAVE to watch tv or listen to radio?

WifeMotherWorker · 09/09/2022 07:38

YABVU as you can see with the vote results and comments here!!! The majority want this level of coverage as the Queens passing is huge news.

DailyMailHater · 09/09/2022 07:38

Best abolishes them all then as itv, channel 4 and sky news were all doing the same……

i think it was right, the head of state has died so a level of respect is expected….what surprises me is how many people were surprised by the “level of courage”….did people honestly expect anything less

Dragonskin · 09/09/2022 07:39

Our Head of State has just died, it wasn't Ethel down the road. It is the biggest news possible in this country right now and will be talked about by EVERY UK based TV show and Radio station for some time. It will be in Eastenders, there will be documentaries, it will be the focus of the news

If you don't want to hear about it I suggest you stick to Amazon Prime and Netflix for a couple of weeks

Soproudoflionesses · 09/09/2022 07:44

Even Radio x is doing a different show today (rightly so imo) so good luck with that!

MrsLargeEmbodied · 09/09/2022 07:46

i saw last night channel 5, which often has royal programmes, was broadcasting all night programmes about the queen, until 6.30 in the morning, even more than the bbc schedule

WoolyMammoth55 · 09/09/2022 07:49

OP, if you want music without news that's what ALBUMS are for.

She was the head of state of 30% of the world's population and had reigned longer than any monarch ever. Give them 24 hours to discuss without starting an anti BBC thread - as if other stations are just not mentioning it?!

YABVU.

Butterfly44 · 09/09/2022 07:50

Why?
If YOU'RE sick of hearing about it turn to another channel or turn it off. YOU decide watch to watch and listen to. No one is forcing you.

1994girl · 09/09/2022 07:51

SpringIntoChaos · 09/09/2022 06:57

Inappropriate - our Queen has just died! Have some respect!

Yes she's just passed. Yes its sad. But they are right, it's going to be on the news for weeks if not months. Get over it.

BigBearLittleBear · 09/09/2022 07:51

You are aware there at about 35 million other channels and streaming services aren’t you?

DorritLittle · 09/09/2022 07:53

There are a lot of people with vested interest in abolishing the BBC. Are you one of them? If not just turn over. It's not hard!

itsgettingweird · 09/09/2022 07:55

It's hardly the bbc.

Any channel worldwide would report like this on big national events.

Our bbc happens to be the British broadcasting company so will likely to have the biggest coverage.

But every channel will report this a lot. News will be all about this for days. Then again at the funeral.

And for me that's the scary thing. The biggest news? What about the energy crisis that will affect everyone in the country? Both individuals and businesses?

How much bad/undesirable news will be buried as a result of no one discussing anything other than the passing of the queen?

It's sad. It's a historic event? yes. But the biggest news in the midst of an economic crisis? No.

It simply doesn't need days of wall to wall coverage. It's ok to discuss other things.

Bonjovispjs · 09/09/2022 08:00

Just change channels🤷🏻‍♀️

ElspethTascioni · 09/09/2022 08:02

You do know she’s our head of state, right? Do you think there wouldn’t be this coverage if we had a president instead, and they died during service? Of course there would…

Dragonskin · 09/09/2022 08:11

Yes it has been less than 24 hours since she died, the economic crisis has been the focus for weeks and will be again in a couple of days time. To use your own words it simply doesn't need days of wall to wall coverage. It's ok to discuss other things.
