Time to abolish the BBC?

The queen has died - fine; express sypmathy for the family etc - but I do not need to be told the same news and potted history of her live on repeat 24/7 - on every single radio station.
Makes you realice what a stranglehold monopoly BBC has on UK radio.
But if anyone can reccomend a decent UK tald radion station that is not obsessed with tellilng me that the queen has died 100 times an hour, much appreciated.

I get having it on BBC1 24/7 but shutting down other channels? Give me a refund then please? And yes I have Sky, Netflix, Disney and Amazon (lots of free gifts before u judge) but that is BY CHOICE!

You could always have a look at BBC sounds - there are thousands of hours of drama, documentary, comedy, science, crime etc etc.

All these 'edgy', cool republican types complaining about the coverage, the protocol has been in place for decades, it'll last about ten days, there's plenty of other broadcast material available, if you don't have the nouse to find it, that's on you.

Threads like this are as ubiquitous as the news about the Queen's death, and tbh far more boring and prosaic.

👏👏👏👏

I mean, they're clearly not.

@Person18885 - it went on for about a week with Prince Philip - I expect this will be the same; if it ends some time today, great.

And for those assuming I watch daytime TV all day - I don't watch TV at all.
I enjoy listening to an intelligent update on world affairs, not a constant regurgitation of the same person's life, or why Dorris from Harrow has chosen to stand outsige buckingham palace. It's news, yes - but having had wall to wall coverage, why not restrict it to news bulleteins, a single station dedicated to wall to wall coverage if anyone wants that?

I completely agree.

One channel dedicated to constant coverage is plenty

I agree OP but streaming is now your friend.

Agreed, the iPlayer is excellent

PerfectlyPreservedQuagaarWarrior · 09/09/2022 08:55

Yes, let's have some RESPECT

Actual queen shit.

justaladyLOL · 09/09/2022 08:55

Oddly the royal stuff is the only time I have any time or respect for the beeb I think they get it right
Otherwise it is just unwatchable woke rubbish
I cannot even watch match of the day with the laughing idiot Micah Richards who is utterly useless

MorningtonCroissant · 09/09/2022 08:56

YANBU to find the endless coverage annoying (especially when it's telling us nothing new), but YABU to want to end the BBC!

Commercial radio is excellent at the moment - all music and no ads! Try that.

Novum · 09/09/2022 08:58

Seriously, how helpless can you be if you can't find an alternative to listen to? Not only are other radio stations incredibly easy to find, but there's podcasts, recorded programmes, YouTube, Sounds, audiobooks, etc etc. Why should the entire network of BBC channels be disbanded just because you can't be bothered to put your brain in gear?

PerfectlyPreservedQuagaarWarrior · 09/09/2022 09:00

It is interesting the way the allegedly so left wing BBC is in full on nation is in mourning wasn't she wonderful mode, whereas the more right leaning GB News see no reason to give Harry a bit of time off from nitpicking even in the hours after he's lost his grandmother. I'm a republican who has no respect for the institution and even I think the media should be laying off the grieving family for a bit.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 09/09/2022 09:01

As soon as l heard l turned all channels off. I watched the gates of Balmoral for 2 minutes, but didn’t see the point of filming the gates.

l tried iplayer but that was off too.

I’d like to know more about the energy cap and other news, but I’m avoiding it all.

Im not a huge tv watcher, dip in and out occasionally. Not a monarchist either. I don’t want to hear anything about it. So I’m avoiding it.

Monday55 · 09/09/2022 06:59

You can flick through the radio channels until you find one that's not reporting about the Queen's passing?

You really can't atm. Even the dance channels are playing "reflectful" music interspersed with telling us the Queen has died every few minutes.
I actually got to the point of wondering if the artists had pre-recorded all the extremely slow versions of the songs ready for this moment. And wondering how many people were finding themselves dropping off to sleep with all the calming music.

You are going to have days of this at least up to her funeral. For someone who claims to enjoy intelligent world affairs you would realise this. BBC sounds had many many podcasts listen to those.

phishy · 09/09/2022 09:08

I don't really listen to the radio (10 minute drive to work so not much opportunity in the car and prefer audiobooks) but surely other stations are available?

theworldhas · 09/09/2022 09:09

Agree. Its biased coverage of certain political events also proves its way past its expiry date. It might be salvageable if it halved the license fee and dumped

a) Virtually all political content. and
b) naff entertainment, including Celebrity whatever, Eastenders etc
c) the website

and just focused on providing high quality educational docs and other high quality cultural content.

You haven't been watching if you think it's all "unwatchable woke rubbish". This is a channel that includes Attenborough, Antiques Roadshow, Strictly, Sewing Bee, Line of Duty, Gardeners World, University Challenge, sport, Call the Midwife, the Proms, Sunday services, Carols from Kings, Coastal Railways, Last Tango in Halifax, the Repair Shop, Midsomer Murders, Stages ...

Is every single one of those woke, rubbish, and unwatchable?

theworldhas · 09/09/2022 09:14

BBC doesn’t provide objective reporting. It’s provides an attempt at objective reporting from the lens of one who is knee deep in the values and worldview of the British Establishment. While also being constantly under fire from the government for not being establishment enough.

AclowncalledAlice · 09/09/2022 09:14

Yesterday was just too much. BBC1&2 showing the exact same thing BBC3&4 suspended and all the BBC radio stations saying having the same program. By all means have full coverage on BBC1 and R4 with maybe a sombre tone for the rest of the radio shows, but the BBC is supposed to "Be for all" so would it have been so bad to have BBC2 showing the scheduled BBC1 programming and BBC3&4 to go ahead as normal?

Cornettoninja · 09/09/2022 09:18

It’s 2022 and people genuinely can’t find other media to entertain themselves? Baffling.

The only thing l’d watch from there is Call the Midwife and The Antiques Roadshow.

l hate The Proms, and don’t know anyone who watches Sunday Service or Carols from Kings.

So yeah, most of it is rubbish.

Tbf the only thing I watched out if that is Line of Duty and even then I wouldn’t miss it

I do rely on the radio stations 4 and 6 though so I pay the fee for those and the existence of the BBC which I do value

Rapidtango · 09/09/2022 09:28

Just had a 30 minute drive listening to R4 and it was really interesting, commentary on King Charles (wonder how long it will seem strange writing that!) and his views on climate change, an interview with someone who painted the Queen's portrait in 2010, some personal anecdotes from people who had met her. We're living through an important historical event and the coverage reflects that.
