To be sad that Queen has died but can't wait for the sycophancy to be over

I am no royalist but like many in the same position I am truly moved by today's historical news

It is a "once in a lifetime" moment for many of us and I am going to admit that despite strong Republican views I surprised myself by being knocked sideways by news

Not that it wasn't expected and that the Queen hasn't had a good life but by the sheer magnitude of what is happening

However other threads seem to be dismissing the fact that we can feel both - sadness that an elderly individual who was "known" to all of us has died and an unwillingness to join in the "grief jamboree".

I feel like I did when Diana died - I am struggling to recognise the grief others are manifesting and the absolute deferential attitude present here

I feel like this will just build and build and we will be exhausted by end of it

Evidently

Thistleinthenight · 08/09/2022 23:09

🤣

Blossomtoes · 08/09/2022 23:10

She’s been dead for less than 12 hours. Get a grip.

TarasHarp55 · 08/09/2022 23:10

The worst thing about that awful poem doing the rounds on FB are the comments like.... "beautiful words" or "I'm in tears reading this".

NessLockwood · 08/09/2022 22:17

I'm not in the slightest bit interested in the death of some random stranger and am finding it baffling that people claim to have 'cried' about it. Actually cried? Really? Pull yourself together.

Honestly for a people who believe in a stiff upper lip we've adopted some shockingly weak behaviour the last few decades. Weeping over a cartoon character in the newspapers.

Uneducated

Thistleinthenight · 08/09/2022 23:12

But that poem, though. They should get a grip.

Iamthewombat · 08/09/2022 23:12

Thanks. I particularly enjoyed this bit:

I gently touched each shoulder,

with Phillip by my side

Then I turned away and walked,

with My Angel guide

Is Paddington the ‘Angel guide’ or the be-winged corgi? Also, what’s with dead members of the royal family rematerialising to touch living people on the shoulder? That has creeped me out big time. Can they do it at will? Prince Philip has been dead for 18 months and he’s still at it. Return to thy tomb! Is he standing behind me now, squirting ghost mustard at the ceiling?

DesdamonasHandkerchief · 08/09/2022 23:14

Why the fuck would she be talking to a fictional bear?!

The Paddington fixation is because of the skit during the recent platinum jubilee celebration programme where she takes tea with Paddington in Buckingham Palace 🤷‍♀️

Hambledy · 08/09/2022 23:15

That corgi's other wing is all wonky.

That corgi won't be guiding shit.

Maybe it's just been in the Redbull?

My city was due to host a youth football tournament starting tomorrow. I've just seen it has been cancelled.

So 200 young people have raised money to fly here and stay for 10 days, now for nothing.

It's monumentally unfair to those kids, and an absolute overreaction. Why would it be disrespectful for those children to have the brilliant once in a lifetime experience they were hoping for?

The last time this tournament was on it was actually teams of homeless people, I don't know if it's the same now, if it is that makes it all the more hollow and pointless of a gesture. I feel quite angry about it tbh.

That's so sad - it's just ridiculous.

I just posted on another thread about how I was in TK Maxx which was supposed to be closing at 8pm when they suddenly announced over the tannoy they were closing "in 5 minutes as a mark of respect to the queen so please make your way to the till ". It was 7.20pm. A member of staff then practically rounded on me and told me "you need to go now I'm afraid!" I mean sure, close early if you really feel it's such a necessity but for gods sake at least be honest and admit it's because you all want to get home half an hour early and are delighted you have an excuse!

Id be livid over the football tournament being cancelled - absolutely no valid reason at all for it. It's jus5 going to be "cancelled coz of covid" all over again - an excuse for lazy twats to be even lazier!

Twawmyarse · 08/09/2022 23:17

And why would Paddington be in heaven, he's not dead as far as I'm aware?

Hambledy · 08/09/2022 23:19

Those immigrants are tricky fuckers though.

I'd be pissed off about the bloody bear being the favoured one if I'd been a loyal Corgi all my life. Shares one marmalade sandwich with her and now walking her to heaven. The cheek.

Now, now! Don’t spoil the mourning with logic or sensible questions.

Hambledy · 08/09/2022 23:22

@CandyLeBonBon you raise an interesting question ie can redbull be patriotic in these changed days? Let's head over to Nicholas Witchell so he can jaw on about it endlessly.

YourLipsMyLipsApocalypse · 08/09/2022 22:10

The Queen, who secretly lobbied the Scottish government so she didn't have to follow green energy measures the rest of the country is held by, would be bothered by the amount of plastic, would she? Not sure about that really.

Oh. I didn't know about that. I just looked into it a bit more and the royals environmental credentials are a bit shit really. Shame - that was one of the only things I thought they were ok on.

TheMoth · 08/09/2022 23:24

Is Paddington not the grim reaper then? Surprised no one's appropriated Pratchett's Death yet.

How easy is she going to find it getting in to heaven? Eye of the needle and all that. But she is the Head of the church, so maybe gets a special pass.

So many questions.

Well he certainly won't be talking to Charles any time soon so we might as well keep him busy!

StoneofDestiny · 08/09/2022 23:26

What irks is the media presuming everyone feels the same and only every interviewing people who are prepared to emote and toady. They never interview anyone who says they are not that fussed as they never knew her. But lots and lots of us feel like that. The indifference that dare not speak its name

Very true. You won't hear any criticism - it's like she was a saint! Hardly - she was married to a truly awful man, had to be forced to pay taxes, paid off millions to stop Andrew being exposed in open court. No saint.

Iamthewombat · 08/09/2022 23:26

I expect that Ingrid Seward, Jennie Bomd and the awful Arbiter family are REJOICING at this turn up for the books. Them, and lady Colin Campbell.

Spectre8 · 08/09/2022 23:26

Personally, I don't really feel anything knowing the news. Maybe others felt she was inspiring to them etc and that might explain why they feel sad

Me too 🤣

She's pretty horrible anyway. She goes to my local pub and expects everyone to brown nose her!

If you don't want to see coverage of the Royal family then you can always move to Antarctica, youll live in radio silence.
End of day she was the Queen and like it or not they'll cover every aspect of it right up to the coronation
Just remember it could be worse, we could have a president and look at the state of countries with presidents. So I think suffering the media frenzy of the queens death is a all price to pay

What's up with Ireland's presidency? Surely it's better and fairer to have an elected head?

How can it be right to have someone just because they're born "royal" . It's ludicrous.
