To be sad that Queen has died but can't wait for the sycophancy to be over

I am no royalist but like many in the same position I am truly moved by today's historical news

It is a "once in a lifetime" moment for many of us and I am going to admit that despite strong Republican views I surprised myself by being knocked sideways by news

Not that it wasn't expected and that the Queen hasn't had a good life but by the sheer magnitude of what is happening

However other threads seem to be dismissing the fact that we can feel both - sadness that an elderly individual who was "known" to all of us has died and an unwillingness to join in the "grief jamboree".

I feel like I did when Diana died - I am struggling to recognise the grief others are manifesting and the absolute deferential attitude present here

I feel like this will just build and build and we will be exhausted by end of it

@ReneBumsWombats no I'm not surprised at all. But it is a bore.

workiskillingme · 08/09/2022 22:30

It's more annoying when they are talking with fondness about that berk Charles being king

YourLipsMyLipsApocalypse · 08/09/2022 22:30

You sound kind of silly @Culldesack

Again, people discussing current events in a way you don't like, doesn't mean it was designed to goad arguments. That's all.

Monkeybutt1 · 08/09/2022 22:30

I'm with you, I'm sad she has passed like I would be for anyone but I'm avoiding the news and will be for the foreseeable
I have no issue with others grieving if that's what they why to do but it's the forced grieving. Shops closing, events cancelled etc and this is tomorrow not even the day of the funeral!

bedtimestoriesforbears · 08/09/2022 22:30

@Overshadowed
Very sorry for your loss

I completely agree. So far I’ve had a message from school saying children will be supported if needed due to their potential grief, message from sports fixtures saying respect will be paid before matches, 90% of my social media friends are posting broken hearts with pictures of the Queen.

I’ve just cuddled my 3 children to sleep after telling them my Nan passed away today also. They don’t give a crap about the Queen right now but will be forced to go along with public mourning when they have REAL grief to deal with.

I'm sorry for your loss @Overshadowed, and for how alll this coverage might impact the grief within your own family.

Mochudubh · 08/09/2022 22:32

I agree with you OP, I'd like to know what's happening in Ukraine, Pakistan etc but the news has been nothing but the Queen on all the news channels (apart from the American ones which are, well, American). Why do BBC1 and BBC2, BBC Scotland and BBC News channel all have to show the exact same thing?

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 08/09/2022 22:32

Yanbu. Performative "grief" is not respectful- its exploiting the woman's death for personal ego/ attention in most cases.
Also nothing more cringe than random companies / organisations like posting mawkish statements on twitter to get their brand out there. So distasteful.

LampLighter414 · 08/09/2022 22:33

I looked up the Facebook poem. Found a lot of posts. One with the Queen holding Paddingtons hand and a corgi alongside “I’ve done my duties Paddington, please take me to my husband”

so strange

YourLipsMyLipsApocalypse · 08/09/2022 22:33

My city was due to host a youth football tournament starting tomorrow. I've just seen it has been cancelled.

So 200 young people have raised money to fly here and stay for 10 days, now for nothing.

It's monumentally unfair to those kids, and an absolute overreaction. Why would it be disrespectful for those children to have the brilliant once in a lifetime experience they were hoping for?

The last time this tournament was on it was actually teams of homeless people, I don't know if it's the same now, if it is that makes it all the more hollow and pointless of a gesture. I feel quite angry about it tbh.

Why the fuck would she be talking to a fictional bear?!

dalilicios · 08/09/2022 22:35

This is the first time it has happened in most peoples lifetjme in this country to lose their head of state especially by a woman that is respected across the world as the symbol of this country. This doesn't happen every year or decade. So please forgive me to feel sad to lose the face of the woman who has been in our lives since we were born whether seeing her on our banknotes or seeing her cutting a ribbon or hosting important diplomatic gatherings for the sake of our country. This isn't the news about an athlete dying. This is about losing our head of state who has served this country for 70 years.

Mochudubh · 08/09/2022 22:36

Oh,and a weather forecast would be handy. Yes, I can Google but the BBC is meant to be the public service broadcaster.

We know this. Doesn't mean everyone is grieving though.

Literally no one is saying that you can't do any of the above

@Overshadowed sorry for your loss. I hope you find your own way through the noise. I had a similar situation at the time of a different royal death. Don't be reticent to seek out your regular support networks and keep your loved ones close.

OnlyEverAutumn · 08/09/2022 22:39

Oh @YourLipsMyLipsApocalypse that’s bloody ridiculous! Those poor kids 😢

A fictional illegal immigrant bear, I think you'll find.

If Paddington did exist irl and got into buck house grounds some fucker in a furry hat would shoot him, for sure.

Qwerkie · 08/09/2022 21:08

Yanbu - there’s an awful poem making the rounds on Facebook, some maudlin shite about Phillip tapping her on the shoulder and them going to heaven or something

We literally just got sent this in a WhatsApp group and both my husband and I were agog at both the premise and the terrible grammar throughout. 😅

CandyLeBonBon · 08/09/2022 22:42

YourLipsMyLipsApocalypse · 08/09/2022 22:21

Oh settle down @CandyLeBonBon it's just someone's opinion, just as valid as those posting about the nation's granny.

I'm perfectly settled thanks, but you might want some support with that rigid personality you've got going on!

I laughed so hard at this. Unfortunately I am on a train and my fellow passengers are aghast at my display of mirth.

YourLipsMyLipsApocalypse · 08/09/2022 22:43

Nah I'm good @CandyLeBonBon

Where do people make such shit up from about others they've never met 🤷🏻‍♀️

Completely agree

Some random trade association send condolences

Im sure they'll be touched

FloorWipes · 08/09/2022 22:45

I think that some of the people who are getting quite angry about the news coverage/expressions of grief/changes to plans/reactions of other people etc. are actually experiencing and expressing their own form of grief. This is quite a big event - so it’s an understandable coping reaction to want to control the situation and downplay the significance.
