Wedding on day of Queen’s funeral!!!

The Daily Mail are saying funeral is on day 10 of mourning. Assuming tomorrow is day 1, is that not Sunday 18th? What happens to a wedding on that day?!

@PerfectlyPreservedQuagaarWarrior thank-you 😊

@theexceliconisgreen I saw that post as well, I am sorry for the comments you got. It seems to be always the case that people virtue signalling have none themselves. Really hope your wedding goes ahead and your sister is there to see it. Did you manage to speak to anyone in the Registrar's office by any chance? I'm waiting on a break between work meetings to call.

@callmebridezilladontcare thank-you 😊haven't managed to get through yet, phone lines are busy as I imagine a lot of people are calling in this morning..

Why would anyone feel they can’t attend ?? I doubt any of her friends know the queen personally 😂😂“

This. I’m feeling unexpectedly sad about her but it won’t stop me getting on with my day 🤷‍♀️

HollyFlan · 09/09/2022 10:31

My wedding is scheduled for Monday 19th which was chosen as a date that is significant to us personally. I phoned the Edinburgh city chambers today to ask, and they advised they are not sure yet regarding our wedding. They are cancelling weddings within the next 5 days however and/or trying to reschedule as city chambers is closed due to the Queen being laid to rest temporarily in St Giles. So there are cancellations happening from the Council by the sound of it.

Drunkencrow · 09/09/2022 10:33

I am now worried if wedding is the day of the funeral it will be cancelled be it the Saturday or Monday. Any other day likely fine.

Same for us - it's a date we are very fond of. We weren't able to get through the Registrar's office yet but hoping to gain clarity soon. Fingers crossed for both our weddings.

Oh gosh @HollyFlan Sad

I still find it completely nuts the posters on this thread who think all those concerned are being over-dramatic and "just carry on as planned"! It may not be the B&G's choice to carry on as planned! We need someone who can legally marry us to be able to get married! Angry

BarbaraofSeville · 09/09/2022 10:49

Well Monday 19th September is my birthday, so I'm now intrigued as to what makes it special to two other Mumsnetters.

Exactly! I'm all for just carrying on as planned with parties and the like, but getting married is actually one of the things where you can't just go with the flow!

Marvellousmadness · 09/09/2022 11:13

Why on earth do people marry on a Sunday 🤔🤐

BarbaraofSeville · 09/09/2022 11:16

Why not? Plus not everyone has a standard Monday to Friday week or any ties to the Church of England/Scotland/Christianity or any other faith.

Sunday will seem perfectly reasonable to many people, plus it reduces demand on Saturdays. If you can't get a weekend date at your choosing because all the Saturdays are booked up for months on end, why not do it on a Sunday?

Check the official guidance on National Mourning.
www.gov.uk/government/publications/the-demise-of-her-majesty-queen-elizabeth-ii-national-mourning-guidance

You are good to go, in line with the final wishes of the Queen and the blessing/approval of this of the King. I hope that venues respect this.

The official guidance states that its completely discretionary as to how you behave and there are no obligations to behave in a certain way or to cancel certain events or celebrations.

There is an emphasis to be more tactiful over timings particularly on the day of the funeral BUT it is not a blanket ban on doing certain things.

I hope you go ahead and have a wonderful day.

I married on a Sunday. Why is it different to any other day? Plus Fridays and Saturdays are the most popular so you're more likely to get a closer date if you go with a Sunday.

callmebridezilladontcare · 09/09/2022 11:21

Our registrar's office told us they have zero guidance as of yet, and therefor can't confirm or deny that they will do weddings the day of the Funeral. So we're on hold for now until they know more.
Trouble is, it's exactly 10 days until the wedding and there's so much to be arranged or moved or cancelled altogether that every moment counts.
Nothing to do now but wait for the Registrar to get back to us once they know more.

MermaidEyes · 09/09/2022 11:22

My local MP has just announced the funeral is Monday 19th. Bit premature, I haven't seen it officially announced anywhere else yet....

It's cheaper. Fewer couples marrying means less competition for venues, both for the ceremony and the reception.

Why on earth do people marry on a Sunday 🤔🤐

Very common with British Jews. Obviously Friday or Saturday presents logistical difficulties, so Sunday is the easiest remaining day for most people in a society where the weekend runs Friday evening to Sunday evening.

It was all over the TV this morning.

CurzonDax · 09/09/2022 12:15

To all the couples being affected by this - you are not unreasonable about worrying (certainly no bridezillas!).

Issues is - if the venue decide not to go ahead, the venue will just offer couples to reschedule/refunds. However, venues aren;t the only suppliers - the venue doesn't;t have a contract with the florist/photographer etc, the couple do. Through no fault of their own, the couple will then have to default on these contracts, and could potentially lose money. Hopefully, most suppliers will be reasonable and understanding, considering the circumstances, but as most of us COVID brides know - this isn't always the case.

I hope things work out, and go smoothly for every single one of you!

Drunkencrow · 09/09/2022 12:33

Hoping it's Monday and not Saturday personally ! Not many get married on Mondays.

QuebecBagnet · 09/09/2022 12:40

The local cathedral to me has cancelled upcoming weddings and also graduation ceremonies for next week. They’ve said they can not hold events during a period of official mourning.

TeaandHobnobs · 09/09/2022 12:52

Today is considered Day 0, so at the moment the funeral is expected to be Monday 19th.
However as the Queen died in Scotland, details are a little bit fuzzy as to the timings of her coffin being moved to London, and the various periods of lying in state in Scotland and in London. So it could be later?

BrokenMatress · 09/09/2022 13:34

Wedding here on the 17th- I just wish they would hurry up and name the day. They must know.

the80sweregreat · 09/09/2022 14:08

It is a tad annoying that they won't tell us which day.
