To hope that not every TV channel is wall to wall coverage of the queen's death?

I loved the queen and am very very upset. But I don't want to see coverage on all channels as happened when Philip died. I want some choice.

Am I being unreasonable?

Well theast hour of the athletics was supposed to be on BBC 3 from 8pm. It is not on,, but neither is there coverage of the Queen's death. There is just a black screen with white text on it reading "Programmes are suspended for a major news story. Please switch over to BBC One." If they're not showing anything about the Queen on BBC 3 why on earth can't they show the programme which was scheduled to be on? It's not as if it's a potentially offensive or disrespectful comedy programme.

Genuinely…. Who has no alternative other than watching tv all day, every day?

Quite a few of my bed bound elderly clients when I worked in care.

Not care homes btw. They were in their own homes.

Me! There’s only so much reading and sleeping I can do. I enjoy tv. It’s the only thing I can actually do and have done for the last 8 weeks

The OP obviously wasn't around when Diana died in 1997.

True. I was a child then and I’m not from the UK. It was everywhere. This is historical moment. An era has ended. We can’t just move on after 5 minutes.

I use TV as an escape from watching DH die earlier this year. I find the evenings hard because I replay a lot of stuff from that last day over and over in my head so TV is escapism for me so I am glad I have been able to find channels that are not wall to wall about the queen.

YANBU but luckily we can watch streaming instead if we don't want wall-to-wall tributes and sad music.

This is why I've just subscribed to Netflix.

I think I might do the same.

I could watch "The Crown".

Are people that fucking sad they have absolutely nothing to do than watch terrestrial TV for 15 hours a day?

Not sad at all, I don't watch huge amounts of terrestrial TV generally but tonight I want to watch a live sports event which was being broadcast on the BBC but has been removed from all BBC platforms including iplayer. I am using a VPN to watch on YouTube as the YouTube coverage isn't available in the UK. Plenty of people won't have the option of doing that.

@IHateWasps and @Soubriquet

In both of those examples, people may want to watch tv all day every day… but seriously … it’s not mandatory

This won’t go on forever but it’s an event of world importance. 🤷🏼‍♀️

No one is going to be hurt/come to any grief whatsoever as a result of missing a sporting event.

Likewise no one is going to be any the poorer if they don't have 12 days of non stop coverage of the Queen's death on every mainstream channel.

One is a once in a lifetime event.

The other isn’t.

Go figure.

YANBU. And I say this as someone who feels quite emotional about the whole thing actually.
I remember when Phillip passed away, we were on a long car journey that day. Sad slow songs the whole way on every radio station. It was a bit much.
It will be the case though that that’s all the tv channels will show. No one wants to be the TV channel not paying tribute, how would that look.
Streaming all the way. I predict low tv ratings all round.

An event of world importance that isn't going to have any actual real impact on the daily lives of your average citizen and which could be adequately covered while still leaving a channel free for regular programming.

The monarch and head of state just died, and we are about to have the last full state funeral probably in history. You're never going to see anything like this again in your life, this won't all happen to the same extent for Charles, William or anyone else born after her time or who was not the longest serving British monarch in history. This is a major historical event, and a major event for the UK.

Yes, it is about to be bloody inconvenient for a few days. Historical events are like that. You can tell your great grandchildren how you were there and there was nothing much on telly and we all had to watch Netflix.

Maybe twice in a lifetime, given Charles is in his 70’s.

YANBU. We've got weeks of competitive grieving to look foward to.

I wonder if there will be books of condolence and people queueing round the block to sign them, like when Diana died?

The radio in the car was interesting just now.
No singing on any of the channels. Just music - not too intense. But no singing.

It is history but what is there to say?

Gonna be an interesting drive home with all the reflectful music, even on the dance channels. I really don't want to listen to jazz thank you, and certainly don't think it's in any way respectful

Freeview channels, other than the old terrestrial ones, seem to be showing 'normal' programmes. Radio seems to be wall-to-wall sombre music, even Planet Rock is playing classical music.

It's a major event - but unlike some other major events there is not much 'happening' or much drama.

I will watch the funeral. But I am avoiding the TV tonight. Just watching a film

Or even 3 or 4 times... my dd is younger than Prince George so it's entirely possible she'll see 5 monarchs. Granted being one at the moment she won't remember this!
