To ask why people vote Tory?

Tierne · 07/09/2022 14:25

It has to be said that life in the UK on low or middle income is much harder than it seemingly is in other western countries of similar wealth. I dont think the Tory party is making this country a nice place to live in at all. But they keep getting voted in.

So if you vote Tory:
Why do you vote for them?
Would you ever change your vote and for what reason?
Do you feel uncomfortable at how Tory policies batter the most vulnerable in our society? For example making it impossible for people to get on the housing ladder, high rents and low tenant protections, no energy bill caps, etc?

NB: I dont want this to turn into a Tory bashing thread. I'd just like to hear how Tory supporters feel about their party.

No, you missed the point. I’m not saying that at all, the point being that most of the tories haven’t got a clue what it’s like to struggle and neither do they care, because they’ve never lived through it and it doesn’t effect them. They are mostly billionaires who grew up with silver spoons in their mouths.

It’s got nothing to do with other parties or other MP’s

Of course it hasn't got anything to do with other party's MPs, in your eyes! So how about all the millionnaire virtue signallers, who are left leaning:

Bob Geldof
Gary Lineker
Hugh Grant
Emma Thompson
Steve Coogan
Bono

That's off the top of my head. What about two Jags Prescott, Blair and Kinnock?

Scurryfunge12 · 08/09/2022 17:47

There’s nothing to say that millionaires can’t have compassion for the less fortunate though is there?

I was saying that the tories don’t care, not that every millionaire/billionaire doesn’t.

It’s just less likely that someone who grew up with money would understand or care.

Anyway, my original point was, if your parents have money it’s much more likely that you will. If you can be bankrolled by your phone parents to get a private education etc.

TooBigForMyBoots · 08/09/2022 17:47

Did you forget JKR in your list @Culldesack?

Scurryfunge12 · 08/09/2022 17:47

*parents, not phone parents!

I would like to know what your definition of not caring is. If all of those millionnaires cared as much as they purport, why havent they given away their wealth? You can't just say Tories don't care, full stop. I would expect that argument to come from a secondary school pupil, prompted by their left wing teacher.

What happened to keeping it civil?

Scurryfunge12 · 08/09/2022 18:10

I’m not suggesting giving away their wealth.

The standards of living in this country this last 12 years has absolutely nose dived, cuts to services left right and centre, a complete lack of compassion which has disproportionately affected those on a low income, cuts to police and education
disabled people who have life long disabilities needing to jump through hoops to get what they are entitled to incase they’re a lying scrounger, more food banks than ever before which is a disgrace in a country like ours.

There’s a load examples which I can’t be arsed to list.

Meanwhile the rich stay rich. I’m not interested in whataboutery either before anyone says that, it doesn’t make it right. They shouldn’t be getting tax cuts when they are absolutely filthy rich already and the ordinary folk have to suffer even more.

I’m not suggesting that any party is perfect by any stretch, just that life is noticeably more and more miserable as time goes on like I’ve never experienced before in my life.

Dragonskin · 08/09/2022 18:14

So what i really want to know is: if you've been voting for the government over the last 12 years, have they delivered on any of the reasons for doing so? (and just saying "well, they're not Labour" won't cut it with me because that is not an answer)

Well truthfully my last vote was against Labour rather than for the Tories mainly because I pay a lot of tax already and would have ended up paying significantly more if JC had his way (which living in the SE with a giant mortgage for a small house would have caused our family an issue). And my tax burden hasn't massively increased so yes

Then your husband and children are at risk from this law in a way other British citizens are not.Sad

Not really. It’s as unlikely that they’ll lose their citizenship as that they’ll die from a lightning strike. The idea that the UK government is about to start stripping UK citizenship from anyone who’s not a terrorist just isn’t worth worrying about.

MattDillonsEyebrows
But the thing about the left that annoys me the most, is the whinging, we have had the most diverse cabinets in history over the last few years, all Tory governments but it's still not enough. It like
"We need more people of colour"
"what?? Not Nadhim, he's a man!!"
"We need more women"
"eh? Not Therese! she's fat!"
"We need more women of colour"
"Duh! I wasn't talking about Kemi, I disagree
with her!"

All these nicely diverse people and yet -
shock and effing horror - their ideologies are
all wrong, you see.
So wrong, in fact, that they are not really Black
or Brown the way they are supposed to be.
The only way for them to be truly diverse is
the progressives' way.
The far-righteous way that is.
That's the only game in town now.
Otherwise, they are just as evil as any white supremacist or fascist.
Now they're in government they actively participate
in the structures & system of oppression.
Wicked, wicked diverse people.
Jesus...

The tories are mostly billionaires?

You surely must know that that’s not true, don’t you, or is this really the sort of conspiracy theory that are doing the rounds on the left?

DdraigGoch · 08/09/2022 18:21

TooBigForMyBoots · 07/09/2022 21:08

My point is you can't trust the Tory party on this. They are no more or less likely to believe TWAW than any other party and theyll spin on a sixpence. Not only that, voting Tory "because at least they know what a woman is" is simplistic and dangerous. I feel sorry for any GC Bridgend voter who voted on this basis only to elect Jamie Wallis to the HoC.

Do you have any evidence that Wallis uses the women's toilets? Or does anything else against women's interests (hit and run victims excepted)?

Scurryfunge12 · 08/09/2022 18:26

@FarFromHome2 most of them are rich, maybe not all billionaires but most are privileged and would not have lived through hardship. It’s evident by the ideology.

Some people will always work in factories or shops with no means to better themselves and earn more, because various circumstances do not allow for this, and to deduce that the reason people are poor is because they don’t work hard enough is somewhat erroneous. That’s all I’m trying to say.

Culldesack · 08/09/2022 18:31

Blossomtoes · 08/09/2022 18:02

There's nothing wrong with my analogy. I could have called the poster childish names. I cannot understand the simplicity of saying all Tories are privileged and most billionnaires!

So you just made it up then. Invented, and then posted a lie.

Why? Do you not understand how infantile that is, to simply lie to try to make a point that you know isn’t true?

You’re just another dishonest leftist who is angry but lacks the dictation to understand why, and yet another great example of why decent people are so often turned away from Labour.

Scurryfunge12 · 08/09/2022 18:35

@Culldesack and I cannot understand the simplicity of thinking people are poor because they don’t work hard enough and everyone should just get a better job or retrain as if it’s that simple.

I know it wasn’t you that said it, but still. I never said they ‘don’t care’ I gave reasons why. Most of the cabinet come from a place of privilege and have not experienced hardship, so therefore it is more likely for them to turn a blind eye to it.

Scurryfunge12 · 08/09/2022 18:38

@FarFromHome2 I didn’t purposefully invent anything, I was trying to get a point across about privilege. You’re just being pedantic now, you know exactly what I’m trying to say.

Scurryfunge12 · 08/09/2022 18:52

What I meant to say was I gave reasons why I think they don’t care, rather than just saying they don’t care without giving any explanation, like was made out. If they gave a shit the country wouldn’t be in the state it is currently in.

Scurryfunge12 · 08/09/2022 19:04

@Kashmirsilver are you honestly living in a cave? What state? If you honestly don’t know then I can’t be bothered to explain to you because I’ve posted enough now.

To say something like that suggests you’re not in a financially precarious position, disadvantaged in any way or use many public services that have been decimated.

Yes, you are trying to say that you are making up lies about both the background and wealth of Conservative MPs to justify your own unevidenced view that they don’t care about or understand the life of people like you.

Don’t you understand that that’s not how you make a valid argument? You can’t decide how someone is, make up facts to try to justify it, and when those “facts” are wrong then claim that the person correcting you is being pedantic.

Do you actually know how the wealth and privilege of Conservative MPs compares to that of other parties? Do you also firmly believe that as Jeremy Corbyn was from a wealthy family and went to private school they he too had no idea about the life of “ordinary” people?

The law remains when the government changes. This UK government is moving further to the right. Your children do not have to commit terrorism for this law to be used against them.

But I get the reasons why you need to believe it won't ever apply to your DC.

Well no, most people aren’t. I think a problem here is that people like you have little idea how normal people live, people with a good career, a nice house, cars, and so on.

It’s a problem with many on the left who’ve got no idea how normal people are, what they do, or how their lives are. You also seem to have very little monthly for those whose taxes pay for everything.
