Is this dress "slutty"? (Their words not mine)

PyongyangKipperbang · 05/09/2022 15:57

I ask because, in MNspeak, a "close female relative" described it as such.

For context this is not my normal attire, I am currently wearing black skinnies and a Def Leppard Tshirt! But I have been invited to a "Come as you were" fancy dress party. I didnt really have a clue what to wear and was toying with going out and out silly and wearing something a 1970's little girl might wear when I found this for £6 in TKMaxx. Big hair, make up put on with a trowel, heels, more make up and enough perfume to kill an elephant....job done, clubbing early 90's me! Not that I did much clubbing but ya know, artistic licence!

She says that it would look ok on either of older two daughters as they are early twenties but it is "inappropriate and slutty on a woman of your age". I told her it was fancy dress and a laugh but she is deeply disapproving. In hindsight, me saying "Oh good, perhaps I'll pull then" to the slutty comment wasnt the best thing I could have said!

So....AIBU to wear it?

Photo would be useful wouldnt it?!

Looks great wear it where you want.

iklboo · 05/09/2022 17:42

@lemartin - no, the poster is taking the piss out of someone upthread who said OP's tattoo being in an 'uninspired place'. Smile

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 05/09/2022 17:43

It looks great - not my thing at all (the print). If I'd say anything maybe a tad too short but you've got a cracking figure so wear it!

Person criticising definitely jealous of your figure!

Theblacksheepandme · 05/09/2022 17:44

@lemartin
Don't think you got the joke there.

balalake · 05/09/2022 17:44

Not slutty, but I would not want to wear something that is Liz Truss's style but with a pattern not a plain colour.

pompei8309 · 05/09/2022 17:13

Nice dress ,nicer figure but very uninspired place to have a tattoo , that makes the “whole thing” looks cheap , sorry

I'll just pop into my TARDIS and tell 18 year old me not to do it then!

I have regretted it virtually since I had it done but at the time was struggling a lot and I wasnt thinking straight. But nice to know I look cheap.....is that like slutty but with less money?

GelatoQueen · 05/09/2022 17:46

I don't think it really meets the brief and wouldn't associate the dress with clubbing in the 90s. But then I was more grungy ....

mamabear715 · 05/09/2022 17:49

It's great! You look brilliant. :-)

I'll be a bit controversial here as everyone is saying it looks great but you did ask opinions so I will share mine too (even though I'm worried I'll get people hating on me for going against the consensus)

I personally quite like either showing the chest / leg rule.

I wouldn't use the word your aunt used as I think that's rather rude, but In my opinion I think it's rather revealing dress on the chest legs and it's tight (although I agree not by some of todays standards)

I think you have a beautiful feminine figure and I personally think (don't hate me people!) it would look stunning in something a little bit more covered to leave a little to the imagination. Perhaps with a longer mid length flowing skirt and a fitted top or a bit more covered at the top if you're going for a shorter tighter skirt. I think that would look elegant and show off your figure in a lovely way.

Of course at the end of the day it's up to you though Daffodil

X

But would it meet the brief if elegant? I don’t think the OP is trying for elegant, given it’s fancy dress. And I know I personally wasn’t elegant in the late 90s/early 2000 when I was clubbing.

OP I agree with pp that it doesn’t look all that 90s. And it probably needs to be a bit more slutty, if my recollections of that time (and my clothes) are accurate.

Christmasiscominghohoho · 05/09/2022 17:51

Not slutty at all.

goldfinchonthelawn · 05/09/2022 17:51

Not remotely slutty. You look incredible.

I was expecting something like this

coconotgrove · 05/09/2022 17:52

It looks great.

However, yes, it is a bit tarty*, but it’s also very 90s Kookai too - my manager had a very similar Kookai dress in a red poppy print - she was a bit of a rock chick and wore it with back-combed hair, heavy eye-liner and studded ankle boots.

*my rule of thumb has always been to showcase either cleavage or legs, not both together

Well, I googled 'inspiring places' and the first result was the Uyuni Salt Flats. So, if the OP had her tattoo done there she'll be grand. Or the Rocky Mountains or the Cliffs of Moher, which were the next two results.

That is definitely more inspiring than the bum!

I don't recall people in the early 90s being bright orange.

Who said anything about fake tan? Add orange skin to that and OP would look very cheap. I was talking about a proper tan - the sort you get if you spend some time outside in the fresh air? Pasty white is not a good look. And the OP did ask for opinions. I'm giving mine, even if it is different to the majority. I've not joined the Borg, I still do my own thinking.

KarmaStar · 05/09/2022 17:54

Sorry to read about your dd op.
I don't think you are thinking this through objectively and I do appreciate why,but you are potentially putting a lot of pressure on the shoulders of the best friend and this could cause the friendship to end.
Children are very resilient,be led by your dd and she will cope fine, she will make new friends and blossom.
This will strengthen her confidence overcoming what she faces.
try not to worry, instead send positive thoughts and images out into the universe of your dd running, laughing being happy.🌻🌈

Urghh...dressing for you age and the BOB!!

My mother was over the moon when I had to cut my long hair short thanks to a bleaching disaster during lockdown! So I dyed it pink. One thing worse than long hair on the over 40's is pink hair apparently. Now I am growing it back out and she has realised she has long lost that battle!

I have been "nugded"away from band shirts and docs/converse on strolls in M&S with a not very subtle "Oh that would look lovely on you" in the department I swear should be renamed "Middle-Aged-Appropriate-Apparrel"

BTW I am nearly 50 but fuck it! My mother looked older than I do now when she was 30 and that was all down to her clothes. She is really beautiful and has a great figure herself. She could have totally rocked the 1970's and 80's but she dressed like my grandma!

I think your mums wrong - but it’s not 90s … I remember jeans and those body con tops and short skirts and huge tops and DMs and everything black

agreed - no way is it 90s. But depends which end of the 90's you mean... apparently mom jeans were in fashion. I recall wearing LBD's a la Katherine Hamnett bardot style one (yes I paid a lot of money for that!) and LBD a la Robert Palmer Addicted to Love video with long sleeves. Add to that polo necks, black leggings, ski pants, also sequin gold halter-neck dresses, then later on you had Spice Girl looks but I went clubbing in mid 90s and wore:

padded velvet jacket
Padded DKNY sport jacket
Karen Millen - anything and everything from padded KM Sport dresses to bell bottoms, long sleeved wrap tops, crochet tops. tight leather/spandex trousers, Cargo pants plus matching skimpy tops with leather thong threading. Dresses were short, skimpy, black/maroon - Peter someone was one designer?
sparkly jeans - tight
Antoni & Alison logo tops
But you also had the indie kids who wore slightly different clothes to us house/techno girls Wink
shoes were platform and velvet or wedge types (I had some great Pied a Terre wedges)
Morgan de Toi skimpy tops, skirts, trousers for clubbing, Jane Norman for cheaper trends!
Spagetti strap tops and sequinned or not - I didn't like them much as I had boobs whereas my friends had no boobs or small, I was at least a C cup but size 8-10.

A natural tan?

I am naturally ginger so naturally either white or red.....any tan on me has to come out of a bottle!

You're a similar age to me so if you suit it and feel comfortable in it then stuff it - wear it!

Wow that Shein one is something else! Couldnt wear that.....waaaay too many stretch marks and see previous comment about spaniels ears!

OP posts:
speakout · 05/09/2022 18:01

How do you feel in the dress OP?
Forget the "slutty" comment.
It is very tight, showing your curves, legs and cleavage- looks great on you, but not something I would feel comfortable wearing- but that's me, I would spend the night holding in my stomach, checking my boobs were still contained and pulling the skirt down. I prefer to blend into the background.
If you own the dress and have the confidence then go for it.
But starting this thread suggests that you have doubts.

catandcoffee · 05/09/2022 18:02

OP did you say your age wrong ?
Looks amazing on you and I never noticed your tattoo. I was too busy admiring your great figure.

Age is just a number 😉
