Is this dress "slutty"? (Their words not mine)

I ask because, in MNspeak, a "close female relative" described it as such.

For context this is not my normal attire, I am currently wearing black skinnies and a Def Leppard Tshirt! But I have been invited to a "Come as you were" fancy dress party. I didnt really have a clue what to wear and was toying with going out and out silly and wearing something a 1970's little girl might wear when I found this for £6 in TKMaxx. Big hair, make up put on with a trowel, heels, more make up and enough perfume to kill an elephant....job done, clubbing early 90's me! Not that I did much clubbing but ya know, artistic licence!

She says that it would look ok on either of older two daughters as they are early twenties but it is "inappropriate and slutty on a woman of your age". I told her it was fancy dress and a laugh but she is deeply disapproving. In hindsight, me saying "Oh good, perhaps I'll pull then" to the slutty comment wasnt the best thing I could have said!

So....AIBU to wear it?

Close female relative is being ridiculous.

You look absolutely fine.

Can't comment on whether it looks appropriate for the 90s as not a 90s person as far as clubbing is concerned (too old).

Would just say to go easy on the perfume though, as that can be really unpleasant for everyone around you.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 05/09/2022 16:12

Your boobs look fabulous.

Chooksnroses · 05/09/2022 16:13

You look fantastic!

mattermore · 05/09/2022 16:14

You actually have the body of a twenty year old ( seriously, can’t see any signs of ageing!).

Shodan · 05/09/2022 16:19

Frankly, if I had legs like yours I'd wear the damn thing all the time.

But- (and I'm only saying this since it's for fancy dress, I'll say it)- the pattern looks like Granny's curtains.

Oh that was a joke, I did it then but I wouldnt do it now!

Thanks for thall the compliments, the boobs are being helped by a very good bra (spaniels ears without 🐶😅)

The pattern is brighter than in the photo, light isnt great in the photo and I dont have the confidence to any wackier and it was cheap!

Looks amazing! Go for it!

jennakong · 05/09/2022 16:27

You look brilliant for (whatever age you are - guessing forties perhaps judging from your other comments) - I suspect your relative is jealous of your cracking figure & legs rather than genuinely disapproving of the dress...

Opaljewel · 05/09/2022 16:27

PyongyangKipperbang · 05/09/2022 15:59

Photo would be useful wouldnt it?!

I think your friend is jealous. You look fab!

fruitbrewhaha · 05/09/2022 16:28

That's not 90s though. 90s clubbing was rave wear. Baggy trousers, lots of bright colours, 60s revival etc.

If you were a rock chick the go grunge. Flannel shirt tied around your waste and a nirvana t shirt.

Mistymountain · 05/09/2022 16:28

Why don't you wear the rock metal gear, if that's what you were actually into. I think it would look way better?

oopsfellover · 05/09/2022 16:28

Omg it’s lovely. I want your figure 😀

Greensleeves · 05/09/2022 16:29

Fuck me, if I had your figure I would wear the shit out of that dress.

Ignore your mother. Always a sound starting point for any life decision Grin

Pinkdelight3 · 05/09/2022 16:29

It looks neither slutty nor 90s and doesn't sound like it's "as you were" either, so an odd choice given the brief. But otherwise, you carry it off well and your DM is wrong. That's probably the most "as you were" element though, having your mum disapprove of a slutty outfit feels distinctly 20thC.

Chikapu · 05/09/2022 16:29

If I had legs like yours I'd walk around in nothing but my pants all the time!

Carpedimum · 05/09/2022 16:30

You look fanfukintastic @PyongyangKipperbang absolutely go for it! I mean, it’s not a job interview is it, it’s a fun night out! If you’re comfortable, you go for it.

SavoirFlair · 05/09/2022 16:31

You look bloody amazing in it - go for it

SunlightThroughTrees · 05/09/2022 16:31

I think you have an absolutely fabulous figure! I will go against the grain though a bit though and say that I generally follow the rule of “boobs or legs” ie show one area of your body off at at a time. I personally wouldn’t wear an outfit with a low neckline that was also fairly short.

I think slutty is such a horrible description though (I know you are quoting someone else’s words OP and it’s not your description).

StridTheKiller · 05/09/2022 16:32

It's neither 90s nor revealing. What an utter anticlimax!

PyongyangKipperbang · 05/09/2022 16:33

Maybe I could go OTT rock/metal to make it more fancy dress ish then? It used to be jeans, docs and band shirts (and still is!) but I could go with a skirt and ripped fishnets? with a mangled cut off tshirt and fake tattos?

OP posts:
Discovereads · 05/09/2022 16:33

I’m baffled, it doesn’t look “slutty” at all, it looks really nice & age appropriate on you.

But I also think it’s not 90s and not what I’d wear to a fancy dress “come as you were” party. It’s a bit of a “middle aged date night” type of look tbh.

Mistymountain · 05/09/2022 16:35

Yes! Your new suggestion re mangled rock, fishnets, tattoos sounds great

PyongyangKipperbang · 05/09/2022 16:35

Well it was closer to 90's stuff where I lived, small town in the Midlands. There wasnt some huge rave scene (if you wanted that then you had to travel). I am talking town centre clubs.

Believe it or not we didnt all wear the same things!

And its about as revealing as I can go!

I think this is it as you said you used to dress this way. Think Tank Girl.
