Is this dress "slutty"? (Their words not mine)

I ask because, in MNspeak, a "close female relative" described it as such.

For context this is not my normal attire, I am currently wearing black skinnies and a Def Leppard Tshirt! But I have been invited to a "Come as you were" fancy dress party. I didnt really have a clue what to wear and was toying with going out and out silly and wearing something a 1970's little girl might wear when I found this for £6 in TKMaxx. Big hair, make up put on with a trowel, heels, more make up and enough perfume to kill an elephant....job done, clubbing early 90's me! Not that I did much clubbing but ya know, artistic licence!

She says that it would look ok on either of older two daughters as they are early twenties but it is "inappropriate and slutty on a woman of your age". I told her it was fancy dress and a laugh but she is deeply disapproving. In hindsight, me saying "Oh good, perhaps I'll pull then" to the slutty comment wasnt the best thing I could have said!

So....AIBU to wear it?

Ooh, it was your mum?

My mum is trying to convince me to get my long wavy hair cut short and "smart". I'd look awful and she knows I would. Quick straw poll of my friends says keep it long.

She keeps buying me FatFace clothes as well. Then complains that I never wear them. They go to charity after a year or so.

Jealousy is so sad. I have a 3 year old DD and I'm never going to try and passively aggressively get her to look ugly.

I agree with those who have said it looks nice on you, the pattern is more mature and it’s really not skimpy, so although it’s a nice dress on you it’s not really ‘fancy’ dress in my eyes. You wouldn’t look out of place wearing it to the pub or out for a meal.

iklboo · 05/09/2022 17:21

Looks ok. I don't love the pattern as it's a bit outdated, but definitely wouldn't consider that slutty.

It's meant to look outdated. It's a fancy dress party 'come as you were' theme.

Nice dress ,nicer figure but very uninspired place to have a tattoo , that makes the “whole thing” looks cheap , sorry

Apart from not asking your opinion about her tattoo, she can hardly bleeding move it to suit you can she?

SplendidUtterly · 05/09/2022 17:23

It looks good on you!

Beezknees · 05/09/2022 17:23

Also a load of bollocks.

BadNomad · 05/09/2022 17:23

Where is an inspired place to have a tattoo, anyway?

Sheffieldissunny · 05/09/2022 17:23

Wear what you want! It shouldn't be up to her to tell you what you can/can't wear!

Bum?

Octomore · 05/09/2022 17:25

This. The dress looks great, but it's not a 90s look. Those sorts of big prints weren't in fashion back then.

IncompleteSenten · 05/09/2022 17:25

Oh there's nothing wrong with it.
She's being an ageist wanker.

luci3lou · 05/09/2022 17:26

I'll be a bit controversial here as everyone is saying it looks great but you did ask opinions so I will share mine too (even though I'm worried I'll get people hating on me for going against the consensus)

I personally quite like either showing the chest / leg rule.

I wouldn't use the word your aunt used as I think that's rather rude, but In my opinion I think it's rather revealing dress on the chest legs and it's tight (although I agree not by some of todays standards)

I think you have a beautiful feminine figure and I personally think (don't hate me people!) it would look stunning in something a little bit more covered to leave a little to the imagination. Perhaps with a longer mid length flowing skirt and a fitted top or a bit more covered at the top if you're going for a shorter tighter skirt. I think that would look elegant and show off your figure in a lovely way.

Of course at the end of the day it's up to you though Daffodil

Photo would be useful wouldnt it?!

Wow, I was expecting something totally different. You look fabulbous, not slutty. AND you have an amzing figure ‐ probably the reason for the sour grapes

cultkid · 05/09/2022 17:27

Not slutty

Are they normally rude

Puzzledandpissedoff · 05/09/2022 17:28

I'd have preferred the actual dress without the tie/ruche up the side - as in display one asset rather than them all - but nevertheless it looks fabulous on you, and let's face it you've got the sort of figure that would look good even in a bin bag!!

Enjoy Smile

But does it look "slutty"? That was the question.

lemartin · 05/09/2022 17:29

This is not slutty in the slightest, you look lovely! :)
I imagine the old trout was probably just jealous. I was definitely expecting a neon/ spandex clingy dress from the description, but the one you've shown is really nice! If I was at a restaurant and you entered on a date I wouldn't look twice (maybe an envious glance!)

Sunnyqueen · 05/09/2022 17:33

Looks banging
Think close female relative may be a bit jelly.

IcakethereforeIam · 05/09/2022 17:34

Well, I googled 'inspiring places' and the first result was the Uyuni Salt Flats. So, if the OP had her tattoo done there she'll be grand. Or the Rocky Mountains or the Cliffs of Moher, which were the next two results.

Podgywodge · 05/09/2022 17:36

Tempted to report this post as a troll post but only because I'm envious of your figure. You look bladdy gorgeous.

Somethingneedstochange · 05/09/2022 17:37

Looks great on you you've got the figure for it. If you feel comfortable and confident in it go for it.

NotLactoseFree · 05/09/2022 17:38

If I looked that good in that dress I'd wear it on the bloody school run.

Slutty my ass.

Wrong thread?

Julieann418 · 05/09/2022 17:39

Looks good you have a lovely figure.

jays · 05/09/2022 17:41

It looks brilliant on you, you have a fantastic figure, wear it and enjoy the party!

ChateauMargaux · 05/09/2022 17:41

It's fab!! And a pair of fishnets would cost you more than that!!

It's a come as you were... not come as someone else thinks you should theme.

And before I even saw the dress I thought of this poem by Donna Ashworth.... but actually you are aging well!! Rock it!!

Men don’t age better than women,
men age without fear,
without worry,
without judgement.
Men age secure in the knowledge that it’s as it should be,
and the fight is not theirs to take on.
Men age without prying eyes looking for lines,
looking for grey hairs or spare fat.
Men just age.
Freedom looks good on them, doesn’t it?

Women age with the eyes of the world upon them,
lest they be considered to have let themselves go,
or lost a battle in the war.

Women age with the rules and restrictions,
of dressing correctly for ‘their age’,
employing new make-up techniques to hide drooping eyelids,
and steer attention away from the wrinkles.

Women age with the burden of beauty and the expectations of society,
wearing them down and creating even more pressure than before.
Making it harder to look ‘well’.

Men don’t age better than women,
they age without guilt.
It’s worth a million new lotions, potions or pills,
promising youth.

Let’s try it and see,
if freedom looks good on us all.

Donna Ashworth
