Do you care that Liz Truss had an affair?

On the one hand, I feel that it's her own business, but on the other, I want a PM I can look up to, who I can trust, who has dignity. After Boris, after his endless lies, Truss doesn't inspire the integrity that I want to see in my country's leader. AIBU?

That's still how many fewer than the current incumbent??!

I felt a bit sick when I saw pictures of him and The Wife on holiday... I have zero idea how she fancies that..???!

mowly77 · 01/09/2022 02:11

I don’t care. There are far more compelling reasons for her to not be prime minister than who she shagged when she was 25.

As many a PP has pointed out.

And nothing will ever top John Major & Edwina Curry.

PigletJohn · 01/09/2022 02:20

The idiot Truss will be chosen as your next Prime Minister by a small number of mostly elderly, rather right-wing, anti-Europe, Brexers, who are members of the Conservative Party. The same people who chose dishonest and incompetent adulterer Johnson.

The only good thing you can say about this is that their choices are unpopular among the rest of the population, so perhaps they will get voted out.

DowningStreetParty · 01/09/2022 02:26

Name a prime minister within your living memory that was worthy, someone you felt able to look up to with respect. Someone you trusted who you felt had the peoples interests at heart.

Gordon Brown
^This 10000%.

MangyInseam · 01/09/2022 02:27

While something like this may affect my view of someone in a personal sense, I don't necessarily care politically.

That's mainly because I don't think that kind of screw up, or even ongoing infidelity, necessarily indicates a person will be untrustworthy or otherwise ineffective in political life. In many cases very good leaders have had shitty personal lives but were very effective in their jobs. And then in some cases, people just screw up for reasons that are confined to their personal life, their marriage is in trouble, whatever.

What is more concerning to me is if the personal failing seems to leak over into other areas. I think this was the case with Boris, for example. His political instincts were overall quite good, I think, but when push came to shove, he would do what was easy, or seemed nice, which also seems to have been how his sex life worked. Not quite enough of the right kind of grit all round.

I don't really have much sense of how LT fits into all that.

FriendOfDorothyGale · 01/09/2022 02:29

I voted YABU, because if you think any tory who becomes PM, has any integrity, you're fucked before they even get the post.

Tory integrity is an oxymoron

John Major, Tony Blair, Gordon Brown, Theresa May all had integrity and were not liars.

Yeah John major had an affair with Edwina Curry
And Tony Blair not a liar??
Apart from " weapons of mass destruction " of course .

He was allegedly a horrendous bully when it came to staff, though. Really awful to work for and in quite a dark space emotionally/mentally a lot of the time.

I agree we were very, very lucky to have him at the helm when the credit crunch hit. He'd done an economic PhD I believe and genuinely understood what was happening, in a way the muppets in power right now couldn't begin to. And can't begin to, terrifyingly. But if we're talking personality, he was no hero, either.

I don't think anyone terribly admirable enters politics. It's not a life a sane person would be that attracted to, is it?

Major had an affair with Edwina Curry while he was PM.

PyongyangKipperbang · 01/09/2022 03:23

Do I care? No

Do I think that a PM should have integrity? Yes

Do I think that the likelihood of anyone who actively seeks the post of PM will have integrity and be trustworthy? Hell no.

Anyone who thinks that someone who will do whatever it takes to become PM is trustworthy, is a "low information voter" - AKA Thick. As. Mince.

Mothership4two · 01/09/2022 03:50

I'm no fan of hers, but TBH, if it was in the past, it wouldn't overly bother me in a leader as long as it doesn't get in the way of them doing their job. It does however set my teeth on edge when MPs trot out their families to improve their image and you then find out they're a cheater.

Winston Churchill consistently gets voted as the best ever British Prime Minister and he had a mistress (apparently/allegedly!)

Verbena1 · 01/09/2022 07:11

No, I care that we are (probably) going to be lumbered with her as PM.

Meraas · 01/09/2022 07:13

ParvuliThankYouDebbie · 01/09/2022 01:40

Tony Blair not a liar? Did you type that with a straight face?

My thoughts too 😂

balalake · 01/09/2022 07:23

Whilst her lack of morals are nowhere near that of Boris Johnson, if the rumours about her and a current Conservative MP are true, then yes it does matter. Something 20 years ago and especially before being in public life you could accept as being in the past, but not something recent and whilst in government.

FrecklesMalone · 01/09/2022 07:36

Surely May is better than Thatcher who destroyed the North of the country and did fuck all to repair the damage. Amazingly trickle down economics doesn't work in an unfair playing field.
In terms of trashing the country it goes:
Johnson, Thatcher, Cameron, May, Blair, Major, Brown.
Truss is probably in the bottom 3. May and Cameron are interchangeable.

FrecklesMalone · 01/09/2022 07:38

Actually I stand by Cameron as third worst as allowed Brexit to happen purely to save himself and the Tories. He fucked up this country for decades for a piece of power.

ConnieSaks · 01/09/2022 07:40

Another vote for Gordon Brown

Alltheprettyseahorses · 01/09/2022 07:42

I really couldn't care less. One was supposed to be with Kwasi Kwarteng I believe, he's been involved with quite a few women and good luck to them all.

ScamelaAnderson · 01/09/2022 07:45

Hoolihan · 01/09/2022 00:29

John Major, Tony Blair, Gordon Brown, Theresa May all had integrity and were not liars.

John Major had an affair with Edwina Currie between 1984 and 1988, while both were married to other people. The affair started while she was a backbencher and Major was the government whip in Thatcher's government.

DontSpeakLatinInFrontOfTheBooks · 01/09/2022 07:46

Of all her failings this should be at the lesser of them.

I’d be more shocked if a Tory MP hadn’t cheated on their spouse to be honest.

knittingaddict · 01/09/2022 07:47

Mrstwiddle · 01/09/2022 00:12

More than one affair? Yes, it does bother me, and it would if she were male.

I feel the same way. Is it too much to ask for a PM with some degree of integrity and morality (I know that's an old fashioned concept).

If the man or woman had other good qualities and would make a competent leader then I might have to shrug my shoulders about any affairs. Sadly, I don't think that's the case here.

justfiveminutes · 01/09/2022 07:48

I care actually. If you don't have honour and integrity in your personal life you are highly unlikely to have it in your professional life. I can think of lots of politicians who are known to have had affairs and none of them are particularly admirable.

Oblomov22 · 01/09/2022 07:51

Yes it bothers me, none of them have any integrity. It bothers me more that I think she's flaky and a bit of a pratt.
