Pack of Birds Eye Fish Fingers £7.50 !! WTF?

planedelay · 30/08/2022 00:00

In Tesco today. Birds Eye normal code fish fingers. 30 pack, so the largest of the standard size packets but not a huge pack. And they were £7.50!! How much?! For bloody fish fingers!

I asked the lady on the check out till and she couldn't believe it either.

I expected them to be about £4. I bought Tesco own at £3.30.

AIBU to think that a what should be a cheap family staple should not be seven pounds bloody 50? And why?

What else is going to rocket in price?

30 fish fingers for £7.50 is really cheap. That works out at 25p per fish finger. Basically you get what you pay for with food. I dread to think what is in the cheaper non branded ones.

MarchMolasses · 30/08/2022 11:14

£7.50 is better spent on something else.

You could buy a roast chicken and feed 4 with leftovers sandwiches, some veg and potatoes and gravy for that.

GhostFromTheOtherSide · 30/08/2022 07:15

posting trigger warnings before talking about meat is ridiculous.

Incidently, I bought thin sirloins in sainsburys the other day for £2.50.

And £7.50 really isn’t that expensive for 30 fish fingers and the thread title is misleading. You’re buying a massive box of fish fingers and are then shocked they cost more?

Absolutely you’re paying for a brand and there’s no reason to, but this is causing hysteria for no reason.

And wtf is it with vegans talking about vegan fish fingers, vegan chicken nuggets, vegan steaks <insert meat of choice. If you’re a vegan you don’t eat meat so there is no such thing as vegan steak or vegan fish. Just call it like it is. Vegan fingers.

It’s so you know what flavour it is. There are veggie fingers which are made of vegetables and vegan fish fingers which are designed to emulate fish, so you need to reflect that in the name. What would you even call the steaks, vegan slabs?

Equally you could make more then one meal with 30 fsh fingers.

Christ I used to buy the 30 pack on offer at £3.50! Was looking at the Tesco app for dinner inspiration and we can't afford most of the things I'd normally make. Lamb leg steaks 4 pack used to be £4.95 I think, would do 2 meals, now its £7.10. Lamb mince that I used to do shepherd's pie with is now £5.10, used to be £4 on offer. Also hardly any of the things I used to buy on offer are reduced now. We will definitely be eating more ready made and processed foods than before.

applecharlotte12 · 30/08/2022 11:25

I buy ASDA fish fingers - 10 for 69p. No way would I pay this much!

AustinsPowers · 30/08/2022 11:25

My husband eats 10 and I can eat 6 so don’t last long in this house

Good grief. I can't imagine anyone eating 10 fish fingers.

The problem with fish fingers is that they are 2/3 fish (and sometimes not fish fillet but any old bits of fish all mashed up- often pollock) and 1/3 refined carbs.

But they are no worse than eating white bread or other white refined carbs.

They are ok for an occasional 'treat' like all processed food.

Pipsquiggle · 30/08/2022 11:27

Everything will go up, due to inflation and, particularly if the food comes from abroad, - Brexit. There will be a brand tax on there as well.

Frozen will probably be more insulated (literally and figuratively) than Fresh.

Crikeyalmighty · 30/08/2022 11:27

I was actually shocked at the lady talking steak prices - I can get really big and lovely steaks in Windsor farm shop for £6.25 and 2 kg of fantastic lean steak mince (which I split into 4 ) for £10.95 from same place

Some of the supermarkets are clearly taking the piss.

'The British Heart Foundation publishes portion size guides and actually states that 3 fish fingers (once a week) is an adult portion'

Seems unlikely, given that there are about 180 calories in three fish fingers. You'd have to be having quite a lot with them to make a meal clocking in at 500-600 calories.

I’ve linked the source, I didn’t make it up.

You are buying pollock. It's not the same. Great if you all like them, but not comparable.

Exactly the same stuff, they're likely to come off the same production line!

@whatshouldIdo2022 To answer your username, you should try cooking vegetarian meals to save money not resort to ready meals (how on earth can they be cheaper?)

Your lamb mince- if you pad it out with brown lentils, or kidney beans, and lots of veg (carrots and peas), you ought to be able to make 2 lots- one for now and one for the freezer.

That's £3 incl potato for a meal for 4 people. I don't think you can buy a ready meal to feed 4, for £3.

You could also try veg curries

can chick peas ( 60pish)
aubergine (80p)
can tomatoes (?)
1/2 bag spinach
small piece fresh ginger
1 onion

Store cupboard spices - garam masala, cumin, turmeric, chili

No they don't @hangrylady Cheap FF are made of pollock (that's in cat food) and pricy ones are cod or haddock fillet.

Elmore · 30/08/2022 11:34

Cod is expensive because it’s over fished.

you got your ‘cheap family staple’ by buying the own brand, what’s the problem ?

mattressspring · 30/08/2022 11:35

@hangrylady

It's not the same stuff at all.

BarbaraofSeville · 30/08/2022 11:35

But pollock isn't less nutritious, lower quality or less tasty. It's just less popular/fashionable so cheaper. I don't particularly like cod anyway and wouldn't eat it as a first choice.

Unlikely in the sense that I can't see why three fish fingers represents the upper limit of an adult portion, when they have fewer than 200 calories. I don't doubt the British Heart Foundation is a marvellous organisation, but that's nonsense.

It's cheaper. That's the point. People are saying branded fish fingers are expensive comparatively. It's a bit like comparing silverside and brisket. Not the same. Great if you are happy with the cheaper product, but complaining the branded finger is costly when it's not even the same thing makes no sense.

People would usually add other food to the plate to raise the total calories in the meal?

I have eaten fresh pollock- bought at a fish counter- and found it tasteless and rather a very soft texture.

Clearly this is a matter of opinion.

Nutrition is one thing but taste is another.

The reason it 'works' in FF is that the coating has a lot of seasoning.

What exactly is incomparable between birds eye cod fish fingers and Tesco cod fish fingers? You can get cod or pollock in both branded and unbranded versions.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 30/08/2022 11:47

80 gm should be your protein, your meal should be veg, protein and carbs, but mostly veg

Mamamia7962 · 30/08/2022 11:48

Why do people place such little importance on the quality of the food they're eating?

Wonder if those same people do the same with non food items? Would be interested to see whether those people think it's more important to have an expensive mobile phone than it is to eat good quality but more expensive food.

I dread to think what’s in a 69p box of 10 fish fingers. I bet Asda pay no more than 55p for the box of 10, and the manufacturer probably makes 5 or 6p. So that’s 50p to make, package and distribute 10 fish fingers, or 5p each. Cheap food is necessary, but you have to admit that that’s just far too cheap to be sustainable, or nutritious surely?
