Following on from another thread:

A top sheet under a duvet cover is a good idea and normal - YANBU
A top sheet under a duvet cover is weird and defeats the point of a duvet cover. YABU.

I have a top sheet under the duvet. It means I don't have to wash the duvet cover as regularly.

This exactly.

GreenManalishi · 29/08/2022 10:01

Not for me, I have three sets of the same plain white so I'm not hunting for matching pillowcases, and just chuck it all in the wash once or twice a week.

YourLipsMyLipsApocalypse · 29/08/2022 10:03

Ew no, I hate the feeling of being caught up in layers of material. Just a duvet for me.

hewouldwouldnthe · 29/08/2022 10:04

Recipe for night time entanglement in layers of polycotton. YABU

broccolibush · 29/08/2022 10:07

YANBU. I overheat horribly at night but hate being uncovered. With the sheet I can throw off the duvet but still have a layer over me.

nomoreflyingfucks · 29/08/2022 10:10

For guests yes as it saves washing, but every day no.

TomatoBrain · 29/08/2022 10:20

Generally no. This a student thing we had in halls to save money and washing - the duvet cover was washed once a term. Top sheet became bottom sheet, bottom sheet and pillow case washed weekly. However, I have warned DH we might return to this method this winter to save on washing costs. Plus hopefully it will keep the DC a bit warmer.

Penguinfeather781 · 29/08/2022 10:23

No - I don’t think there’s a big difference between washing a sheet weekly and washing a duvet cover weekly. I do take the duvet out the cover when it’s hot and just use the cover though.

maddy68 · 29/08/2022 10:24

No? Why would you do that? Surely it wrinkles and gets wrapped up through the night? Just wash your duvet cover

MrsSkylerWhite · 29/08/2022 10:24

No, too hot.

KosherDill · 29/08/2022 10:26

Top sheet here.

God that's disgusting. You don't wash the duvet cover for guests? Pillow cases ??

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 29/08/2022 10:27

My Mum does this as it's much easier to change a sheet than a duvet cover.
But I like being 'hugged' by my duvet, which I don't get with a sheet so am less comfortable.
I think you'd have try it and see if it works for you.

Dahliasrule · 29/08/2022 10:28

Top sheet here, too. Yes, you still have to wash the sheet but it saves having to struggle putting the duvet cover on so often, particularly if it is a king size one.

rainbowandglitter · 29/08/2022 10:28

No from me.

mateysmum · 29/08/2022 10:28

i always have a top sheet under the duvet as I find especially in the summer I get too hot with the duvet up to my neck but too cold without it. I don't find it gets tangled up. It also avoids any draughts if DH nicks the duvet!

Elphame · 29/08/2022 10:29

The sheet under a duvet idea is very popular in the US where they seem to have just switched comforters for duvets!

I hate staying in US hotels as you have no idea when the duvet cover was last washed and people are gross.

WhatTheFlap · 29/08/2022 10:31

I like to have my limbs sticking out all over the place and prefer to have just a duvet as the sheet gets in the way and I end up tangled. Even worse when I stay at my mum’s and she tucks it in so tight I spend 20 minutes getting it untucked by kicking it 😂

Just this.

Never been tangled.

Summerfun54321 · 29/08/2022 10:34

My MIL does the top sheet thing. It’s really uncomfortable and gets tangled and always ends up scrunched up at the bottom of the bed anyway. It doesn’t save the duvet getting slept in as the sheet moves so much.

Motheranddaughtertotwo · 29/08/2022 10:34

I use a sheet under the duvet for my own temperature control but it gets washed as often as the duvet cover.

k1233 · 29/08/2022 10:35

I have a feather doona. Top sheet is seasonal for me. Our summers are hot, so I have a top sheet. I get majorly tangled in the top sheet, so am not a fan. I live for cooler weather when I can ditch it and sleep directly under the doona. In winter I find direct contact with doona keeps me warmer than if there are layers between me and the feathers.

tedgran · 29/08/2022 10:35

We didn't have duvets when I was a child, but my German relatives did, they never had a sheet under the duvet. In the summer we have linen sheets and cotton blankets, duvets are far too hot.

k1233 · 29/08/2022 10:35

Doona covers are also seasonal. Light in summer, heavy in winter.
