Top sheet under duvet, yes or no?

Following on from another thread:

A top sheet under a duvet cover is a good idea and normal - YANBU
A top sheet under a duvet cover is weird and defeats the point of a duvet cover. YABU.

I started doing this a few years back, cuts down the super king duvet cover washing and perfect in Summer to throw off the duvet.

FridayiminlovewithRobertSmith · 29/08/2022 10:38

I love a top sheet. My husband doesn’t. My husband won, but when we’re at hotels it feels lux.

Oldraver · 29/08/2022 10:38

Yep, means I can throw the duvet off if I get too hot

k1233 · 29/08/2022 10:38

@WhatTheFlap are we sisters? LOL My mum is the same. I have to untuck all the bedding at the bottom. I'm an "active" sleeper and can't be pinned by the bedding.

FridayiminlovewithRobertSmith · 29/08/2022 10:38

I think the hotels don’t do it to avoid washing duvets by the way! 😂😂

gogohmm · 29/08/2022 10:39

No except in very hot weather because we fold the duvet down

amusedbush · 29/08/2022 10:39

I have never heard of this Blush

Is a top sheet the thing I have to turn into the Hulk to kick out from under the mattress when I stay at hotels? Because I vote no for that! Grin

Valhalla17 · 29/08/2022 10:41

Yes because it's means your actual duvet is better protected from any sweat etc!

IceStationZebra · 29/08/2022 10:42

I voted YABU because I had never come across this outside of hotels before meeting DH, who learned it from his mum.

It’s quite a good idea for longevity of the duvet cover or if the temperature is not quite warm enough for just a sheet (or if it’s cold) but it seems like a bit of extra faff and washing!

PenCreed · 29/08/2022 10:43

I hate top sheets - I move a lot in my sleep and end up hopelessly tangled. Also washing the duvet cover really isn’t that much hassle, is it?

viques · 29/08/2022 10:44

Why are people still using their duvets in the summer? I take the duvet out and pack it away for the summer, just have a top sheep and an empty duvet cover. It’s lovely when the nights get colder and I put the duvet back, really appreciate it then.

InsertPunHere · 29/08/2022 10:46

YABU, top sheets are horrible

We have summer and winter weight duvets

  1. I have a summer duvet so it's nice and light
  2. I'm autistic and you wouldn't believe the ridiculous routine I need to sleep (specific duvet and cover, special pillow, window open, brown noise playing, sleep mask, Squishmallow beside my head Blush)
  3. Sleeping under a sheet doesn't provide adequate protection from the monsters under the bed
maddening · 29/08/2022 10:48

I would.wake up tangled in sheets

maddening · 29/08/2022 10:50

But in the summer I have a blanket that is light enough to sleep in the warm and heavy enough to sleep as a sheet is too light. The duvet gets shoved off the bed and only used to make the bed in the day.

yikesanotherbooboo · 29/08/2022 10:59

It's a good idea if you don't move around much as it does save on laundry but I hate it for the tAngling.

Surely less faff and less washing - as the duvet cover doesn’t need to be washed as often, and nor do you have to pull the cover off and put it back on.

Interesting results so far. My mum always put a top sheet underneath the duvet cover. I used to think she was doing it wrong. I’ve now decided she is doing it right and it’s lots easier and less faff. I’m converted. And in winter it adds a handy additional layer.

YABU unless you don't move about in bed at all the duvet still needs washing.
PIL do this, we stayed at their house once for a week once as we had building work going on and they were on holiday. The sheets were clean but the duvet cover stank of armpit at the top. DH washed it the first night.

I can't sleep without it. Even if I get too hot, I need a bit of it touching me. I always struggle to sleep on holiday in hot places when they don't have a duvet.

Summerfun54321 · 29/08/2022 10:34

My MIL does the top sheet thing. It’s really uncomfortable and gets tangled and always ends up scrunched up at the bottom of the bed anyway. It doesn’t save the duvet getting slept in as the sheet moves so much.

Totally this. My mum used to do it but I think noticed how scrunched up the sheet got and has stopped doing it.

HotWashCycle · 29/08/2022 11:08

The duvet doesn't work properly if there is a sheet underneath it - it doesn't move around as it should when you are settling down to sleep. Also it is hot and feels restrictive. So YABU.

Reallybadidea · 29/08/2022 11:12

Yeah, my parents do this because it's apparently easier than changing the duvet. Except that making the bed in the morning has become a 2-person job which requires both parents to traipse upstairs mid-morning.

Mind you, my mum also thinks leaving the sheets in the spare room for the next set of guests is also reasonable "but it's only Aunty Pat, she won't mind" 🤢

Bodice · 29/08/2022 11:14

I don’t Ike them. I use washable coverless duvets now which are life changing.

RoomOfRequirement · 29/08/2022 11:16

Top sheet then comforter here. No duvet or duvet covers to wrangle with. And if you get hot overnight but still like to be covered (to stop the monster getting you), you kick the comforter off and still have the top sheet. I'll never use a duvet and cover again!
