Following on from another thread:

A top sheet under a duvet cover is a good idea and normal - YANBU
A top sheet under a duvet cover is weird and defeats the point of a duvet cover. YABU.

This is the first time I've heard of a top sheet being seen as a way to avoid washing the duvet cover!

Really? It just means you wash your duvet cover infrequently as it doesn’t touch your body, Just as in the old days, we washed our blankets infrequently.

It must touch your body, unless you lie there like you're dead

As you twist and turn thoughout the night the sheet wont always be over you, dont you have times when you lie on top of the duvet or put your leg over it?

In any case just like all furnishings - cushions, sofa covers, pillows - you get skin shedding, sweat, odours, they need to be washed regularly. Its one area I wont be cutting down on. I'd rather freeze than not have fresh bedding.

Moon22 · 29/08/2022 23:11

Had a top sheet growing up.. never thought about it much but I presume because we lived in a very cold house so it was an extra layer? Perhaps I'll reinvest this Winter!
I actually like a top sheet (nostslgia maybe) but am far too lazy to bother with them myself!

Each to their own, but... bleurgh, I hate top sheets. Are duvet covers really that much more bother to wash regularly, when they're basically two top sheets that you can stuff a duvet into?

Washing duvet covers is no bother; taking the off no trouble either, it’s just the getting them back on again that’s trouble, except perhaps for a single. And if it’s equivalent to 2 top sheets, it’s double the amount of washing and drying!

But you can still fit a full set of bedding into one washer or dryer load, and pegging out a duvet cover on the line is no harder than pegging out a sheet. So why is "double the amount of washing" twice the effort?

Dobbysgotthesocks · 29/08/2022 23:18

I have a top sheet and two blankets. I get so hot so usually only sleep with a sheet over me. But for the odd night I will use the blankets.
I don't wash the blankets as often as the sheet because they are barely used!

allboysherebutme · 29/08/2022 23:21

My mum did but not me, I'd get too hot xxxx

I use a sheet under the duvet for my own temperature control but it gets washed as often as the duvet cover.

I do this too.

CecilyP · 29/08/2022 23:23

It really doesn’t! I do hospital corners and tuck in half way up the bed and fold over the top of the duvet.

No, can’t say I lie on top of the duvet. I’m trying to imagine how I’d put my leg over!

No, the washing isn’t twice the effort. It’s putting the darn thing back on the duvet that’s the effort. If you’re just washing a top sheet rather than a duvet cover, there’s more room in your machine for other washing.

I see what you mean, Id be ripping that top sheet right out, cant bear to have my feet trapped in, I swing my leg over one bit of the duvet, and have my feet poking out the end. Then the feet are in and out, in and out all night. I drive myself mad with it. Hot cold, hot cold all night

Me too! I can't bear being tucked in.

Ditto

Baoing · 30/08/2022 01:34

I fidget in my sleep a LOT - layers of fabric would drive me nuts. Summer duvet, winter duvet, that's it. No sheet.

ConsuelaHammock · 30/08/2022 02:30

We have top sheets on our beds. The monsters can’t nibble your toes when they’re tucked in!!

onlythreenow · 30/08/2022 02:43

As I said on the other thread, I'm not in the UK and didn't know people actually don't use a top sheet - but then I don't generally ask people about it either. Most of the sheets I see for sale come in a set - one fitted, one flat and often with pillowcases. I don't see the point of constantly taking the duvet out of its cover so the cover can be washed.

onlythreenow · 30/08/2022 02:50

Why introduce an extra layer to make you hotter and sweatier. No thanks.

I live in NZ and frequently remove the duvet on hot summer nights - but still have the top sheet as a light cover. I rather think a duvet would make you much hotter and sweatier than a sheet!

onlythreenow · 30/08/2022 02:51

A top sheet under the duvet is how the Australians and New Zealanders do it.

Oh thank goodness - I was beginning to think I am odd Grin

allinatizzy · 30/08/2022 03:04

Layers are always better, imo. More flexibile and easier to find your personal level of coverage for comfort, which can change from night to night, if not hour to hour. Some nights I want nothing more than a sheet. DH, meanwhile, will need sheet, duvet, and extra blanket to stay warm enough. It's convenient to just fold a layer off or on as needed.

allinatizzy · 30/08/2022 03:07

Top sheet is left untucked on DH's side of the bed, as he also hates his feet to feel trapped. It doesn't actually have to be tucked in to stay in place, I find. Or maybe the light tucking in at the foot of the bed on my side is enough to hold it steady.

I have a top sheet under the duvet. It means I don't have to wash the duvet cover as regularly.

But you still have to wash the top sheet, so it's not saving on washing is it.... or am i missing something?

Talia99 · 30/08/2022 07:28

I find it interesting how many people are saying a top sheet is ‘too hot’. Using a sheet and duvet isn’t something I thought to suggest on the ‘how to stay warm without heating’ threads (because I assumed that’s just what people did). Maybe I will suggest it next time one of those threads is posted since it sounds like a lot of people are saying it’s warmer than a duvet by itself. I wouldn’t know personally since I’ve never tried it.

Tabasco007 · 30/08/2022 07:19

It's the faff of taking the duvet in and out of the cover you are saving. Not the actual washing that takes time.

Wouldn't work for me as any time I've been in a bed with a topsheet it has ended up twisted up at my feet with me directly under the duvet as normal. So if anyone has been a guest in a bed with a topsheet after I've been there your hosts may have been relying on a sheet to do a job it didn't and you've been sleeping under my used duvet cover!

randomsabreuse · 30/08/2022 07:47

Definitely seems to be a restless sleeper thing to hate top sheets. I definitely don't like them, they get tangled and they mean I can't snuggle my shoulders and the middle of my back into a duvet while sticking my feet/legs out to cool down. I'm a notoriously fidgety sleeper though...

@amusedbush I love everything about this answer. Best thing I’ve read on mumsnet in a long while.

Thank you! Grin

MasterBeth · 30/08/2022 11:02

Putting a sheet under a duvet defeats the object. A duvet is not a blanket, it's a duvet. It's all you need.

drunktrifle · 30/08/2022 11:34

It's the faff of taking the duvet in and out of the cover you are saving. Not the actual washing that takes time.
Surely any once a week duvet cover faff saved will be replaced by fannying about making the bed with a sheet and duvet daily.
