Following on from another thread:

A top sheet under a duvet cover is a good idea and normal - YANBU
A top sheet under a duvet cover is weird and defeats the point of a duvet cover. YABU.

We have a top sheet- it helps help you warm because you can tuck the sides in

Sooverthisnow · 29/08/2022 12:36

We must be really stinky because the top sheet gets washed regularly with the other bedding but the duvet cover about 4times a year! The bed is aired every day.

Sooverthisnow · 29/08/2022 12:37

*skanky
or stinky

Bouledeneige · 29/08/2022 12:38

Only during the heatwave. Otherwise it's daft

mondaytosunday · 29/08/2022 12:38

Nope. I don't wash my duvet cover as often as my fitted sheet but I think another sheet would get tangled up every day.

WhizzFizz · 29/08/2022 12:44

We have two single duvets as I run hotter than DH.
I have a single sheet under the duvet and most nights just use the sheet.
It's all washed weekly though.
Unwashed duvet covers 🤢 and I thought it was only students who didn't wash bedding between guests.

YANBU. I overheat horribly at night but hate being uncovered. With the sheet I can throw off the duvet but still have a layer over me.

Same, especially in summer.

nomoreflyingfucks · 29/08/2022 10:10

For guests yes as it saves washing, but every day no.

whaaaaat?! That’s disgusting to not fully change the bedding between guests

Aprilx · 29/08/2022 12:57

I’m using a bed spread at the moment so I am using a top sheet underneath. But definitely not when I am using a duvet cover.

This! Plus it saves washing!

PeloAddict · 29/08/2022 13:37

Yes. It adds another layer to trap air in winter too (put a blanket under your bottom sheet if it's really cold as well
It means I can have the duvet and DP gets the sheet Grin as he's always hotter than me

PeloAddict · 29/08/2022 13:38

@Snowiscold depends on the duvet. I have a blanket on top but my duvet is wool so there's nothing to squish out of it as such! Grin

maddy68 · 29/08/2022 13:58

I am 100% judging anywhere I now visit with a sheet under the duvet

I am assuming you are a reeet skank

Cheeselog · 29/08/2022 14:04

YANBU. It feels horrible and you get all tangled. Whenever I stay at someone’s house that does this I ditch either the sheet or the duvet, depending on temperature.

Sorry that should say YABU!

shazzybazzy34 · 29/08/2022 14:17

Cannot BEAR the feeling of a sheet under the duvet, always gets tangled at the bottom, hate that hemmed in feeling.

Pixiedust1234 · 29/08/2022 14:38

Always had a top sheet. The duvet replaced the eiderdown and we always had a top sheet with that. Mind you we always have a mattress protector too. Apparently some people only use a bottom sheet and nothing else!

CinnamonSweet73 · 29/08/2022 14:55

Top sheet always because I can't bear a draught around my toes and I like them to be tucked in! (I'm tall so that might make a difference.) I do wash the duvet cover as often as the sheets and pillowcases though, the whole lot gets changed each time

Talia99 · 29/08/2022 15:30

Top sheet always. It never occurred to me not to. My mother does - I’m fairly sure because in her mind the duvet replaced the blankets and bedspread she had before - and that’s how I was taught.

I like it because for much of the year, I feel cold if I’m not tucked in. The sheet never ends up at the bottom of the bed - maybe I’m not such a restless sleeper as some people? In hot weather, it lets me throw off the duvet and in cold it feels warmer.

I have a feather duvet so even with a top sheet, it settles nicely around me.

I do wash the duvet far less often than the sheets - I basically treat it as a bedspread. It never touches skin and I can’t see any point washing it more often. I do wash the duvet cover in the guest bedroom when the guest leaves along with the sheets and pillowcases.

Sooverthisnow · 29/08/2022 17:44

Definitely worth having some sort of insulated layer (blanket or topper) under the bottom sheet- it will keep you so much warmer. I grew up in a house with no central heating when we were little and I was never cold in bed cos my mum had it sorted 🙂

SpongeBob2022 · 29/08/2022 17:50

I find a top sheet really uncomfortable. Also unless you are an elderly person and struggle to get the duvet in it's cover, I don't really see the difference between shoving in a top sheet to the washing machine or shoving in a duvet cover. I don't get why washing an additional sheet is somehow saving time so you don't need to wash the cover. Surely it's just replacing one bit of material for another. I don't get it!

If abroad on holiday I quite like a sheet as it's so hot but I like something covering me.

Beetle76 · 29/08/2022 17:55

I’m a recent convert to using a top sheet and a duvet cover. I think it looks nice and feels fancy and luxurious, particularly with good sheets!
But I live in a country where sheets are sold as complete set as the norm: fitted/top/pillowcases.
This also works seasonally as it’s very hot/cold so in summer the duvet is only a very thin 100% cotton one but in winter it’s a heavy weight job plus I switch to flannel sheeting. Super, duper cosy!

aramox1 · 29/08/2022 17:57

The whole point of duvets is not to have to have sheets. Might as well go back to sheets/blankets/quilts like when I was a child. Duvets are much warmer. Just turn them over or wash them less.

Housewife2010 · 29/08/2022 18:00

We always have a top sheet under our duvet. All the bedding is washed weekly. The sheet is tucked in so we don't get tangled in it. All our bedding is linen and linen sheets feel gorgeous against the skin. We've just come back from a weekend staying with relatives. There was no top sheet and a thick quilt. I woke up at 3am every night very hot and just had a sweltering hot quilt over me. I don't wear much in bed so didn't want to sleep with no covers so was very uncomfortable and sweaty. It is so lovely to be back in my own bed where I can just pull back the quilt and sleep under the linen sheet.

Sparklingbrook · 29/08/2022 18:01

Urgh no, a top sheet would be horrible. We have summer and winter duvets.
