Top sheet under duvet, yes or no?

Following on from another thread:

A top sheet under a duvet cover is a good idea and normal - YANBU
A top sheet under a duvet cover is weird and defeats the point of a duvet cover. YABU.

I have a top sheet under the duvet. It means I don't have to wash the duvet cover as regularly.

But you have to wash the sheet. What's the difference?

Malbecfan · 29/08/2022 18:03

We do as we have an electric over-blanket. It's my fault as I didn't check properly whether it went over or under us but it's really good. So we have the top sheet, then the electric blanket then the duvet. It's lovely and toasty in winter. In summer, we keep the top sheet as I quite often kick the duvet off but want something over me.

Maggiethecat · 29/08/2022 18:03

Recently started doing this as I was just using top sheet in the summer but as it’s starting to cool I’ve added duvet on top of sheet.

I really like the feel of crisp cotton against my skin which I don’t get with the duvet.

Not as much faff?

makeitsonumber1 · 29/08/2022 18:04

This is bizarre. We use a flat sheet under the duvet but everything gets washed once a week. I have never heard of this being used to avoid laundry - grim.

Antarcticant · 29/08/2022 18:05

No. My mum does this and all that happens is the sheet gets nastily tangled as the night wears on. I just change my duvet cover when it needs it. I've got loads of duvet covers so I don't have to be in a rush to wash and dry them.

DillDanding · 29/08/2022 18:05

No! I would just find this massively irritating.

largeprintagathachristie · 29/08/2022 18:10

A top sheet under the duvet is how the Australians and New Zealanders do it.

(I’d find it annoying.)

Doona is Australian slang for duvet.

ErrolTheDragon · 29/08/2022 18:12

just have a top sheep

Cosy....Grin

I grew up with sheets, blanket(s), bedspread and eiderdown. I like the flexibility of layers - the bedroom varies in temperature day to day and sometimes quite a bit during the night. And I'm guessing those who can't see the point haven't hit menopause yet...

So now I have those layers but with a single duvet on a double bed so it acts like an eiderdown. I can sleep on one half of the bed and fold the unwanted layers over the other half, flick them back as required if I wake up too cool. DH likes weight... he prefers sheet, a blanket, and two thinnish duvets.Confused fortunately we have a bedroom each.

I do wish hotels would provide a top sheet as well instead of just a duvet. Duvets are horrible when it's warm, and I can't take the dratted thing out of its cover because DH wants it in.

Nat6999 · 29/08/2022 18:15

Yes, it saves changing the duvet cover & if I get too hot I can throw the duvet off & still be covered up.

VerveClique · 29/08/2022 18:18

There’s another thread running about saving energy.

Top sheet and duvet cover all the way. This is the way generations of our family have always done it! Much less washing and drying required, much more ability to regulate temperature.

Some think it’s rank but honestly nothing bad has ever happened because I only wash the duvet cover once every 6 weeks or so Grin.

PyjamaDuddlejuck · 29/08/2022 18:24

You are neither BU or not, it just depends. Some people use duvets like an old-fashioned quilt, with a sheet underneath, and this cuts down on washing and the drama of changing the cover too, because this can be tricky or impossible for some people without help. OTOH this is not really what a duvet is designed for so most people use as intended, and the reason I stopped sleeping with a sheet underneath a blanket or duvet is because I tend to get wrapped up in them. Do what works for you 😃

JimJamJollyWolly · 29/08/2022 18:25

I would absolutely love a top sheet (worked as a chambermaid that taught me how a bed should be!), it feels like luxury! But DH hates it, he's a restless sleeper and it gets all in a mess. So a YABU from me (Although I don't think you are, I'm sure you are very nice!)

If you have a large bed ie super kingsize you know the difference is massive. Plus, my duvet cover was eyewateringly expensive, so i dont want to have to wash it weekly

XingMing · 29/08/2022 20:23

I put a top sheet under the duvet cover if we have a visitor staying one night, I wash the top and bottom sheets, towels and all the pillowcases. If there has been a long interval between guests I will wash the lost so the sheets are not dusty.

XingMing · 29/08/2022 20:25

Wash the lot... my keyboard is erratic.

Whataplanker · 29/08/2022 20:30

My mum used to make my bed up with a top sheet, blanket and duvet in winter and just top sheet and duvet in summer.

HairyMcLarie · 29/08/2022 20:38

We put a top sheet on in our Airbnb. It looks nice folded over the duvet and adds a 'luxury' hotel sort of vibe. Also they are hired sheets so they are lovely and crisp. Also means guests can choose duvet and sheet and blanket if cold, or a mix of them if warm. The duvet cover still gets washed! Only time it doesn't is if the duvet has been packed away in a wardrobe by the guest and they tell me it was unused (we live on tank water so saving water is critical!)

I do the beds so my research tells me that 9 out of 10 guests use the top sheet. 1 in 10 have pulled it away to just use duvet cover.

I'm now worried that the presence of the sheet makes people think we don't wash the duvet cover!

SkygardenTower · 29/08/2022 20:38

I’m still struggling with a duvet, even a 4tog summer one, in the heat. We just use the empty duvet cover in the summer.

But then we only use a 7 tog duvet in the winter and a bedspread when cold.

Nimello · 29/08/2022 20:39

broccolibush · 29/08/2022 10:07

YANBU. I overheat horribly at night but hate being uncovered. With the sheet I can throw off the duvet but still have a layer over me.

Exactly this.

TowerRavenSeven · 29/08/2022 20:58

Yanbu! I bring a blanket and a top sheet with me when traveling because I cannot stand duvets at all! Too bloody hot but if I take it off I get cold if I don’t have a sheet. It’s blankets and sheets for me all the way.

susususu · 29/08/2022 21:00

Nope, my DPs ex wife used to do it so it was automatically stopped by me. She is a bitch so obviously wrong!

MooseBreath · 29/08/2022 21:15

I'm from Canada. We use a top sheet under the quilt/comforter/duvet. In the winter, people typica

MooseBreath · 29/08/2022 21:16

Agh, refreshed page posted.

In the winter, people typically use a fleece blanket under the top layer as well.

I don't see how it's less washing and drying.
Presumably you wash your top sheet, bottom sheet and pillowcases as much as others wash their duvet cover, bottom sheet and pillow cases, then you have the duvet cover to wash as well.
