Following on from another thread:

A top sheet under a duvet cover is a good idea and normal - YANBU
A top sheet under a duvet cover is weird and defeats the point of a duvet cover. YABU.

They do this in hotels and it drives me barmy. My feet get all caught up in it, very uncomfortable

I hadnt heard of this being a device to stop needing to wash the duvet cover so often (we do bedding weekly)

I hope thats not the case in hotels?

Coulddowithanap · 29/08/2022 21:42

Both ways are normal.

bellac11 · 29/08/2022 21:44

This thread is an eye opener

Some people are writing as if they only own one duvet cover set

Others are making the distinction between 'cotton' for the sheet and then their duvet cover. Dont they know you can buy pure cotton or pure linen duvet cover sets? I dont have any polyester or poly cotton in my bedding.

Plus the idea of washing them every few weeks. Thats really not ok. Thats horrible. Seems like I wash our actual duvet more times than some people wash their bedding.

yabu

single duvets is the way to go. easy to change when needed. and dh can keep his farts under his own one.

how do you not get tangled with a top sheet? don't you need to spend a lot of time pulling it smooth before going to bed?

LilyPeace · 29/08/2022 21:47

This is the first time I've heard of a top sheet being seen as a way to avoid washing the duvet cover!

I always use a top sheet because I like how it feels and think of it as more luxurious. I also like that I can kick the duvet off if it's too hot and still be covered.

All bedding gets washed together though, including duvet cover.

I think the hotels don’t do it to avoid washing duvets by the way! 😂😂

I think in plenty of establishments they do.

Why are people still using their duvets in the summer? I take the duvet out and pack it away for the summer, just have a top sheep and an empty duvet cover. It’s lovely when the nights get colder and I put the duvet back, really appreciate it then.

Hardly surprising that you don't need a duvet when you're laid under a sheep 😲

drunktrifle · 29/08/2022 22:02

No way. We stayed in a B&B that had single duvets and it was annoying, we kept getting cold gaps when we tried to have a cuddle.

Tangled123 · 29/08/2022 22:14

I used to have top sheets all the time as a kid. I don’t bother with one as an adult though. Don’t want the extra washing and it’s too warm this time of year anyway.

I find a top sheet really uncomfortable. Also unless you are an elderly person and struggle to get the duvet in it's cover, I don't really see the difference between shoving in a top sheet to the washing machine or shoving in a duvet cover. I don't get why washing an additional sheet is somehow saving time so you don't need to wash the cover. Surely it's just replacing one bit of material for another. I don't get it!

If abroad on holiday I quite like a sheet as it's so hot but I like something covering me.

100% agree. Really surprised that so many people find the idea of washing the equivalent of two sheets at once too much to cope with, but one sheet is fine!

Are you all insisting on ironing the duvet cover or something? Or perhaps you haven't perfected the technique of putting the cover on the duvet?

Im wondering this, its odd

And the best way to get any duvet cover on, is pick up your cover inside out, put your hands right into the top corners, grab your duvet and shake the cover over it.

Anthea Turner did this on big brother. Changed my life

HaveringWavering · 29/08/2022 22:27

@bellac11 yup, that's how I do it. However for people not strong enough to shake a heavy duvet vigorously enough to get the cover to move down it evenly there is another twist on this.

Hold cover inside out, put hands in and find duvet corners. Secure each corner to duvet using a clothes peg.

Work the cover down the duvet then place the other two corners of the cover over their respective corners of the duvet. Hold these and give it a final shake to even the cover out before buttoning up.

bellac11 · 29/08/2022 22:29

Oh i dont shake it vigorously at all, I dont have the strength myself, I just sort of grab the duvet with my hands in the cover to make sure the top of the cover sort of flops down over the end, then I sort of wiggle and pull the cover down bit by bit. Its a chore but Ive got problems with my hands that are quite disabling so its the only way

MacaroniBaloney · 29/08/2022 22:42

I've moved to coverless duvets. Life changing. Bung it in the wash. Quick to dry. No wrestling getting a cover back on or ironing required.

No need for a top sheet to reduce the duvet washing. Bork.

InPraiseOfBacchus · 29/08/2022 22:45

Each to their own, but... bleurgh, I hate top sheets. Are duvet covers really that much more bother to wash regularly, when they're basically two top sheets that you can stuff a duvet into?

Top sheets "settle" onto me, making me feel smothered. I like a light but puffy duvet that makes me feel like I'm resting underneath a warm cloud.

VestaTilley · 29/08/2022 22:47

It’s a hangover from the days of blankets and eiderdowns, isn’t it?

No need if you regularly wash your duvet cover.

Libertyqueen · 29/08/2022 22:53

amusedbush · 29/08/2022 10:47

  1. I have a summer duvet so it's nice and light
  2. I'm autistic and you wouldn't believe the ridiculous routine I need to sleep (specific duvet and cover, special pillow, window open, brown noise playing, sleep mask, Squishmallow beside my head Blush)
  3. Sleeping under a sheet doesn't provide adequate protection from the monsters under the bed

@amusedbush I love everything about this answer. Best thing I’ve read on mumsnet in a long while.

ErrolTheDragon · 29/08/2022 22:59

And the best way to get any duvet cover on, is pick up your cover inside out, put your hands right into the top corners, grab your duvet and shake the cover over it.

If you're small and your duvet is big, you can refine this technique using a big Klippit on each corner.

CecilyP · 29/08/2022 23:01

Really? It just means you wash your duvet cover infrequently as it doesn’t touch your body, Just as in the old days, we washed our blankets infrequently.

Exactly that! The first time a changed a duvet cover, I thought, ‘and this is supposed to be labour saving?’ and put on a top sheet the following week.

You mean like I explained with the clothes pegs several posts ago?

ouch321 · 29/08/2022 23:06

What a strange idea.

Mattress protector then fitted sheet then duvet with duvet cover on.

Why introduce an extra layer to make you hotter and sweatier. No thanks.

Apl · 29/08/2022 23:07

Both are fine and both are normal. Just depends how often you wanna wash your duvet cover. And how much you sweat.

CecilyP · 29/08/2022 23:09

Washing duvet covers is no bother; taking the off no trouble either, it’s just the getting them back on again that’s trouble, except perhaps for a single. And if it’s equivalent to 2 top sheets, it’s double the amount of washing and drying!

Popcorncovered · 29/08/2022 23:11

Duvet cover or sheet and blanket.
