Most restaurants serve it now, especially my favourite which is Indian food. Finding it more and more difficult to find somewhere that doesn't?

Maybe the OP is Sikh @Clymene. Or maybe she started the thread so that people would call her "racist".Wink

You never know with the internet these days.

Its either concern for animal welfare or an anti Islamic thread. Either way, there's only one answer for you dear. Don't eat meat if you don't have the stomach to research ALL aspects of the meat trade. Its not pretty or sweet, why do British people always assume they are more civilised just because they are protected from the realities of life. I have just been on training with a Syrian guy who is vegan. The reason he turned is because after being exposed to people burning on the streets, he realised that living bodies turn to meat. He can't even bear the smell and had a revelation about suffering. Its suffering regardless and if you are ok with that, fine but in some ways I have more respect (or less revulsion) for people who raise and kill animals to live on in an actually poor country than I do for someone wanting cheap Tesco sausages. They also don't waste most of the animal either.

BMW6 · 28/08/2022 13:52

I'm not Muslim but I prefer the Hallal method of slaughter.

erikbloodaxe · 28/08/2022 13:54

As a pp has already stated the only difference between halal and non halal slaughter in a UK abattoir is a recording of a prayer being played. That is it. So all you are opposed to is a prayer.

Topgub · 28/08/2022 13:54

@PriamFarrl

I think it just means that it's permitted. Ie doesn't break halal rules.

So it would still be OK for Sikhs as there's no prayer involved.

But maybe someone with a religious objection can clarify.

SmallPrawnEnergy · 28/08/2022 13:54

I find it strange that people are absolutely fine with the abhorrent standards of welfare our animals are kept in, the way below par slaughterhouses we have, but even a whiff of the world “halal” and faces sure do get red and sweaty huffing and puffing with outrage.
It’s a ridiculous hypocritical stance.

OlderParents · 28/08/2022 13:55

"The Federation of Veterinarians of Europe took the position in 2002 that "the practice of slaughtering animals without prior stunning is unacceptable under any circumstances" (from a BBC article in 2011 but I don't believe that position has changed).

I'll take their word for what is most humane way to slaughter an animal, over random people on mumsnet's opinions.

However - most Halal meat produced in the UK is thought to be stunned before dispatch. The problem I have with it all, is that nobody labels which packages of halal meat are from stunned-prior-to-slaughter animals, and which are from non-stunned. Often it's not declared that the meat is Halal at all, and imported Halal meat is more likely to have not been stunned prior to slaughter.

I find it utterly bizarre that somebody can care very much about the welfare of an animal during it's lifetime but not give a damn about how it is treated in the lead up to and during it's death. Both are important.

I’ve just looked into it and Sikhs can’t eat halal as they are forbidden from eating meat that has been slaughtered as part of a ritual. As I’m assuming there is no ritual slaughter involved in oven chips I’m guessing they are ok.

declutteringmymind · 28/08/2022 13:57

Eat pork.

I do not find it strange. They would not be concerned about halal if it was white Christians eating it.

Topgub · 28/08/2022 13:58

@PriamFarrl

Right.

That's what I said, lol.

antelopevalley · 28/08/2022 13:58

@old if you are not buying from a halal butcher you should be fine.

AgeofAdelaide · 28/08/2022 13:58

until you can confidently say you know how your no -halal portion of meat has been killed, how can you say which is more humane? Have you witnessed either? I smell a troll/clickbait/DM trainee

Fixyourself · 28/08/2022 13:59

Why don’t you like halal?
If you don’t like the slaughter process of halal meat but normal slaughter is fine then you are a huge hypocrite!

Littlegoth · 28/08/2022 14:00

I’ve worked in schools and halal options have never been standard for all students. Halal meat isn’t one size fits all - people from Jewish or Sikh faiths can’t eat it, pretty important for this to be accommodated if you are in a city centre school.

PriamFarrl · 28/08/2022 14:01

Still waiting for the op to say exactly what her problem is.

PleaseGoDontGoAgain · 28/08/2022 14:01

I have a bigger issue with the conditions battery hens are forced to live in.

Vegay · 28/08/2022 14:02

OP you haven't specified why, but if it's from an ethical POV, then you shouldn't be eating any meat. There is no humane way to kill an animal that wants to live, there are just less/more painful ways.

Don't kid yourself that taking part in killing animals, for our own palatable pleasure - not need, is kinder if you slaughter it one way or the other.

5zeds · 28/08/2022 14:03

What is it you don’t like about halal meat? Do you feel the same about kosher meat?

Why?

ReluctantCourier · 28/08/2022 14:04

As a life long veggie I find OP’s stance v odd… you know you don’t need to eat meat at all…?

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 28/08/2022 14:05

If you can't eat meat slaughtered under a different religious ritual then I have no problem with that.
If you don't want to eat unstunned meat so avoid unstunned halal and kosher meat - fine.

If you are a meat eater with no religious bar to eating stunned halal meat then I am wondering what the issue is?

ThirtyThreeTrees · 28/08/2022 14:08

No little chick ever hatched with the dream of being Sunday roast or a KFC takeaway.

I understand why some people are vegetarian (I'm not) but I don't see how there's an issue with Halal meat v other meal. It's all dead animals.

PurpleSky300 · 28/08/2022 14:09

If you eat meat, surely you have to accept that there is a level of pain and suffering that all animals endure in the process of slaughter - regardless of whether they are stunned or not. It's just choosing between different forms of cruelty, essentially.

Sooveritallnow · 28/08/2022 14:09

I avoid it but I also avoid most supermarket meat in general, as welfare standards are very low, so a bit hypocritical to avoid halal but eat the shit that supermarkets sell.

If you care about animal welfare either go vegetarian or buy from small local, free range and organic farmers, don't just single out halal.
