To not understand this Disney obsession?

Adults who love regularly holidaying at Disneyland/Disneyworld and love buying all the Disney merch... what is it you love about it?

OP posts:
KyaClark · 27/08/2022 21:58

This comes up a lot. It's mean-spirited.

kittenkipping · 27/08/2022 21:59

Honestly it's just not a problem though is it? Oh no! Other people do and like perfectly innocuous things that I don't !! String them up!

I don't get Disney. Or Star Wars. Or marvel films. Or gaming. Or dungeons and dragons. I cannot understand why watching people play sport is fun?! (I DO understand why playing sport is fun) I'm not into clubbing, or drinking, or drugs. I don't like ice cream. Lots of people do like- LOVE, LIVE FOR all those things. Tell football supporters that their commitment, time and passion is weird and pointless, see how they react.

The judgemental attitude to others hobbies and interests is bizarre. Aside from dnagerous or illegal stuff- meh. I'm happy they're happy

Abouttimemum · 27/08/2022 22:01

I love ALL theme parks because I love thrill rides and the immersive experience etc, and it’s mine and my husband’s holiday of choice (not specifically Disney)

We have a son now and we’re off to Florida next year and he’s already been to a load of theme parks.

I don’t buy the merch though. And we also go on holiday to other places!

Fairislefandango · 27/08/2022 22:02

I'm not particularly into Disney, but I certainly don't find people's liking for it any 'harder to understand' than any other of the many things other people like which I don't.

There are quite often mean-spirited, disingenuous OPs on here who pretend they 'don't understand' things other people do or like. Understanding has nothing to do with it. People just have different likes and dislikes. Surely you 'understand' that?

Milkand2sugarsplease · 27/08/2022 22:03

But what's the difference to people loving

Beach holidays
19-30
Spa breaks
Cruises
Extreme sports trips
City breaks
Road trips

Everyone has something they like so what's the issue if it's Disney...? 🤷🏼‍♀️

user1484512193 · 27/08/2022 22:03

I love Disney because I didn't have a very good child hood. My mom struggled with 3 of us after leaving an abusive relationship. She always seemed snappy and tired and spent most of her time working... but whenever there was a new Disney film out she'd buy it with lots of snacks, we'd all snuggle and watch the film and when a trip to Disney came along with the school she bust her ass working to pay for me to go. Disney brought some magic into our lives and now as a parent and adult myself we go every few years and I do the same with my kids every time a new film comes out and my daughter loves anything with Mickey and so do I.

CanIHaveAHolidayPlease · 27/08/2022 22:04

I don't get it either. Maybe I'm just a miserable bitch. I'd rather lounge round a pool for two weeks drinking cocktails.

I am secretly jealous though, that people have something they are so passionately interested in and I just can't even stay awake to watch one Disney film.
It's not just Disney though. I can't enjoy Star Wars, Harry Potter etc. I just don't get it!!

fyn · 27/08/2022 22:04

I used to have an annual pass in my mid twenties with a friend. Not necessarily into the Disney merch but both into theme parks. It was cheaper to go to Disneyland parks for a few days with an annual pass than Alton towers.

Towcester · 27/08/2022 22:04

Worked at the Paris one for a summer in the 90s. I don't think the staff there really get into it in the same way the Americans do. Things like just standing around chatting amongst themselves with their backs to the long queue even though the training said not to do this nobody really cared.

There was an American colleague who wore a Mickey mouse coat when out and about (when not working) and a couple of apartments at the staff accommodation had Disney posters on the walls - last thing I wanted to see after another day at work!

It's probably not much different to grown up anime fans except Disney have this bells and whistles theme park where they can come and indulge that interest.

RandomUsernameHere · 27/08/2022 22:04

I love rides and I love the theming, it has a special feel about it. My DCs absolutely love it too (all theme parks, not just Disney). I'm not into the merch though, don't own anything.

DenholmElliot1 · 27/08/2022 22:05

aww thats a nice story @user1484512193

Crinkle77 · 27/08/2022 22:05

I agree with you OP. I also feel the same about adults who are obsessed with Harry Potter.

NoHomers · 27/08/2022 22:06

There's no accounting for taste

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 27/08/2022 22:07

Annieisalright · 27/08/2022 21:54

Considering there are many Disneyland's out there your experience can't be universal across them all

Plus Disney world of course

If we're going to be nitpicky, there are 6 castle parks (Disney resorts) and several parks. Of the 6 resorts (which includes Disney world) I have visited 4 and at each I have visited most if not all parks.

How many have you visited?

IHeartPepsi · 27/08/2022 22:09

I love Disney animation, it's something I've been watching my entire life and now to share it with my child is really lovely.

I also adore the theme parks. I just think they're beautifully constructed and well, it just makes me happy to be there!

I have been as an adult before kids and would again! I don't see anything wrong with it. If a middle aged couple want to go on the Little Mermaid ride who the hell am I to judge?!

SizzlerFizzler · 27/08/2022 22:11

As if the French would debase themselves by being enthusiastic and peppy in the American style! They'd rather die.

Annieisalright · 27/08/2022 22:15

@SliceOfCakeCupOfTea

All bar Paris!

I refuse to go to Paris as for some reason it doesn't seem Disney enough from what I've seen and heard.

Plus it's so close I don't think it would feel like a holiday

SnipSnipMrBurgess · 27/08/2022 22:16

Who is asking you to understand the reasons behind what other people do?

Are you being forced to understand?
Is there a reason you sit around thinking of why people enjoy things?
If so, do you not have a ife of your own?

I just don't get it.

Sceptre86 · 27/08/2022 22:18

I used to watch Disney shows and films as a child and it reminds me of my childhood. Mine was happy. I love themeparks and have always wanted to go. My eldest is 6 and would like to go and we are saving towards it. It's that bit if magic , the extra show that they put on that makes it special. I would happily buy merchandise and have minnie mouse pyjamas and hoodies.

If it's not your thing, fair enough. What I don't like is the tone of these kinds of posts, they always imply some kind of superiority. I wouldn't want to go on a cruise, have no interest in spending all my annual leave around a pool and a hiking type holiday holds absolutely no interest for me, that being said I'm not aghast at the fact that other people enjoy them.

Jalepenojello · 27/08/2022 22:19

I find Disney adults all the same. They all have the same feel about them and I’ve never met one who I can take seriously or can relate to in any way. They all have the same personality. But that’s fine, we’re just different and I like things that would probably never enter their brain. Boring stuff to many.

LouLou198 · 27/08/2022 22:19

Annieisalright · 27/08/2022 21:49

Because it's fun and a nice holiday

I've gone to Disney world every year since the age of 18 with DH. We now go every year with our kids (excluding 2020/2021)

Yes it is! We went last month. I enjoyed the complete escapism. After a couple of days I realised I had not thought about work/other difficult stuff I have going on at all! The shops are beautiful, I could happily just wander round and take in the atmosphere without even going on a ride.

Ooh then I doth my hat to you! Out disneyed.

Paris is also one I've missed. Did you not find them all chaotic and the other guests spoil it?

Exactly that
Let people enjoy what they like. They probably don't like your type of holiday or hobby either but who cares.

Haha true! I just can’t get into the whole Harry Potter thing

It's just badly written rehashed bobbins to me !
