Adults who love regularly holidaying at Disneyland/Disneyworld and love buying all the Disney merch... what is it you love about it?

OP posts:
Isabelle70 · 28/08/2022 17:47

I am off to Disney next year with adult Dd and future SIL. I haven't been for 20 years so looking forward to seeing what it's like as all adults.
I won't be buying all the merch but I am wondering what Mulberry or LV I should take 😃

sayanythingelse · 28/08/2022 17:56

Super sad. I feel the same about Harry Potter adults aswell.

I've never liked Disney even as a kid though. We went to Disney World in Florida a few years ago because DH insisted that we HAD to go whilst we were there. It was shit. So expensive and looked tired and dated compared to Universal Studios (I actually loved the Harry Potter bit there).

Winterfellismyhome · 27/08/2022 21:42

Not a Disney adult btw

Completely agree

Okbye · 28/08/2022 17:57

People who don't 'get' it have obviously never been 😉

UndertheCedartree · 28/08/2022 18:02

I've taken my 2 to Disney Paris a couple of times. The first time we went I went purely for my DS. But I really enjoyed it. It was just pure escapism. Fun and laughter and everything larger than life. The second time we went my DD was 5 and I even planned 'Disney' outfits for her and got her some sparkly mouse ears. I have an Alice in Wonderland biscuit tin and a black and white Tinkerbell mug and they remind me of a happy time.

Nonsense ive been and its good fun but not made me a disney head

Tinktravels · 28/08/2022 18:08

This is me! Annual pass holder here to dlp go a few times a year 🥰

What I can't understand is how 'normal' people ie not wealthy people afford to go
Yes, thinking about it, this is the bit I don't "get". I can see the appeal, but the costs are insane. I can understand why people enjoy Disney, but I guess I can't quite understand why they think it is worth so much money.
We've got a six figure family income but I would never contemplate spending £10- 15k on a holiday, yet that seems the norm for people I know to spend on a Disney trip - to the USA at least. I would think that you'd have to be super rich to afford holidays that expensive but I know quite a lot of perfectly ordinary people who not only have been, but go repeatedly. It seems such a huge amount of money for what's basically a funfair.
Doing the same holiday (of any kind) more than once also doesn't really appeal to me. There is so much of the world that we want to see that we've not had the chance to visit yet so we go somewhere different every time. So I do wonder why people want to go to to Disney repeatedly. But then I also don't really see the appeal of owning a holiday home and going to it every Summer like my PILs do either.
Not that I lose any sleep over it - it's not my money or any of my business after all - but I suppose I am a bit mystified by what is so attractive about Disney that it draws people back so many times at such great expense. I have visited some amazing places round the world and really loved them, but nowhere has made me want to go back year after year.

The issue is you consider it essentially a fun fair

It's not

Disney world is the size of a large city in itself

We go every year and to other places to, so it's not a case of only going to Disney and never seeing anything else, but are lucky to be able to afford two+ holidays a year, one of which being a pricey one

Other families save

I grew up in a council house and my parents still took my brother and I to Disney a couple of times. They had to save for 5-6 years to do so though (and we never stayed on site so would be in the £5-£6k range not £12-£20k range)

DorritLittle · 28/08/2022 19:33

I am also mystified as to how 'normal' people afford Disney.

By adapting their trip

Most won't stay on site

You can easily do Disney for £5-£6k by stating in a villa or a local hotel outside the Disney bubble for example

Agrudge · 28/08/2022 17:46

Good luck with that in the future. Theres no more fast pass system . It's now a paid lightning lane system

We've been this summer using that system. It worked really well, you just have to plan and understand how to get the best ride times. You don't have to pay the extra lightening lane price on the top rides either if you play the ride slots well.

Agrudge · 28/08/2022 19:38

What I can't understand is how 'normal' people ie not wealthy people afford to go

When * *last time our total annual income was just under 50k . Neither of us smoke, we dont drink alot, both had old cars , no loans or financed items. No kids and live in social housing.

Last holiday cost around 10k .flights + moderate disney hotel. Premium seats on the plane , car hire 2wk disney ticket + spending money.

We are no where near considered wealthy but we do have a good amount of disposable income.

As posted above staying offsite would drop that price considerably

That's good to know

I have a friend who goes every year with her parents for a Disney cruise and then on to Disney Florida. Every year. It’s up to them and their money, but I do find it bizarre that a load of adults don’t want to… branch out, experience a different part of America? I’d definitely go once if we could afford it but for that kind of money I wouldn’t go back year on year, solely to Disney. I’d want to see a bit of the world.

Mommabear20 · 28/08/2022 19:45

Why does anyone like anything?

For me, I was raised with it, it's comforting, relatable and I just never grew out of it. I have amazing memories of Disneyland Paris and Disney world from being both a child and being an adult, and I now can't wait to take my DC so they can experience it.

Last time we went we done a few hours in the park then went a did other things. And we try to avoid the parks on weekends. There other stuff to do

Kennedy space centre
Beaches if that's your thing
Nature walks
A bit of shopping
Other theme parks
Rent boats out in the lakes in disney
Check out other Disney resorts
Disney also has some great dining

Disney property is around the same size as Manhattan. So plenty of things to do outside of the parks

IconicKitty · 28/08/2022 19:59

If it makes people happy then why not? There's enough sad things in the world. It's no worse than grown men playing on computer games until the early hours...

I've never had the Disney bug but I think for some it takes them back to childhood. I have only known one woman who was slightly over the top about it - she has a Disney themed house, Disney themed wedding, wears Disney clothes every day and just lives and breathes Disney. Live and let live.

That's still getting on for twice what I would spend on a Summer holiday for our family of 4. Ordinary people don't spent £6k on holidays do they?

£5-6K is still a lot of money. Some people here say they go every year and still have another holiday! This blows my mind tbh.

That’s kind of my point though. I honestly don’t think they do any of that- certainly they’ve never mentioned it, or shown photos. They fly over, do a Disney cruise (once they did the transatlantic cruise to get there), then go to the DW park. They have been to Animal Kingdom a couple of times and I’m sure they’ve done Universal too… but it’s still Disney isn’t it. Every year, endless Disney. I think I’d get a bit worn down and want to see something that wasn’t manufactured and ‘magical’ 😂😂

PatchworkElmer · 28/08/2022 20:44

… By which I mean, America is a huge, huge country and if I had that kind of money, I wouldn’t continue to travel there as an adult year in year out, just to go to a small corner of it for a manufactured experience.

FlibbertyGibbitt · 28/08/2022 20:47

DLP in 30;days 🥳🥳🥳 Disney World Florida in 2024. Love it 🥳

Agrudge · 28/08/2022 20:49

Is much rather have a small chunk of "manufactured magic" every year instead of a costa del sol or benidorm type holidays .

But your right there is so much to see and do in the states

Annieisalright · 28/08/2022 20:52

@DorritLittle

Most family holidays for 10-14 days cost that much tbh

All inclusive in summer holidays will rack up that kind of cost easily

When I was younger my dad worked for £9 a hour in a warehouse and mum part time as a HR assistant

They still managed to save up enough to take my brother and I a couple of times

It's really not that far out of reach for most people if they save for it
