ShockShock

I was folding laundry in my bedroom and this chap fell out, across my wrist and onto the floor.

I'm thinking of ways to catch it safely without hurting its legs. Normally I'd put it in my hands and out the window. Not happening this time!

Does anyone know what type of spider this is?

And did I say, HELP!!!!

It's a miner spider. It has big hobnail boots and a miner's helmet on. You'll need a large skip to dispose of the corpse once you've machine gunned it. Then you'll need to burn the house to the ground.

It’s a mature male giant house spider (Eratigena sp.). You can tell the males from the females by the pedipalps (little front legs). He has emboli on his pedipalps to store sperm. Females don’t have this.
He will be fine outside, despite being called ‘house spiders’ they do fine outside. We have them in our shed, under the decking, and in various nooks and crannies around the garden!

Thanks. I'm glad they're ok outside!!

I don't put many out, just the ones that consistently break the house rules!!

I’d move fucking country

I suggest you don't go to Australia!

Keyansier · 27/08/2022 20:41

That would have freaked me out! That reminds me of my own experience with a huge spider that I found on my curtain last year:

ZeroFuchsGiven I was thinking lots of spider babies

ZeroFuchsGiven · 27/08/2022 20:42

Can I ask WHY everyone is scared of spiders?

x post but why do spider babies scare you?

OneLastWanderer · 27/08/2022 20:43

Just move out, OP. The housing market is brisk right now. It's what I'd be doing. 😱

CaptainFlubby · 27/08/2022 20:43

The fear is a learnt behaviour usually. Passed down from parents.

Wish I knew 😬I have a strong visceral reaction that I can’t seem to over-ride. It’s a problem.

Not in my case. I was the only arachnophobe in my household as a child.

OP could you please put a coke can next to him so we can see his size in comparison. I can’t tell otherwise.

@BecauseICan22 yep we definitely need a comparison photo. Can of coke, hand, small child, Ford Focus....

Grin DD and DH would be on their hands and knees inspecting it. I would be plastered against the fucking ceiling hyperventilating.

^ This
It would need to be relocated- cellar!

@ZeroFuchsGiven

It isn’t that difficult to comprehend really. Snakes also often cause fear responses in humans. It’s instinctive to be wary of venemous things even if we logically know a house spider will not hurt us.

So you’re not scared of them? Good for you. You’re sooooooo brave 🥱 yawn.

I agree but at the same time dont Grin My kids from 16 to 25 are terrified and I often show them huge spiders that I pick up and let run up my arm, my 14yo is like me and if they scream its us that goes and sorts the problem.

Milkywaychocolate · 27/08/2022 20:47

I'm actually going hot and cold all over 😩 rather you than me, OP!

Somethingsnappy · 27/08/2022 20:48

As a pp said, it's actually a male. A horny one! It's spider season and he's looking for a date.

Can I ask WHY everyone is scared of spiders?

I don't know. In my case anyway. My dad isn't. My mum is but not to the extent I am.

If I see a small spider I am ok. I can catch it and take care of it into the garden.

A massive house spider. No. Pure fear overwhelms anything rational. I don't know why. The fear just overrides any sensible thought. No idea why.

stillvicarinatutu · 27/08/2022 20:48

Now weirdly when I was a child I found them fascinating and wasn't frightened of them at all . I could happily pick them up . I could pick anything up - beetles, moths, butterflies, worms , mice , lizards- now I can still pick up anything except spiders and I can't pin point when I became afraid of them. The kids at school used to dare me to pick up the biggest critters they could find and I'd happily oblige !

Now I'm rubbish with them . Not so much small ones but the big fast house spiders I'm not great with . I do try and relocate them but I always thought they died outside?

Daisychainsandglitter · 27/08/2022 20:48

We had a similar size one on our stairs the other day. I struggle to cope with them and make DH sort it.
For emergencies when I'm on my own we have a spider catcher from Argos that I can just about do if I grit my teeth. Well worth the £15 spent and is also a humane way of dealing with them.

yawn away, you do do know that 7 spiders a year go in your mouth while you are sleeping, enjoy your yawns Wink

Milkywaychocolate · 27/08/2022 20:49

@ZeroFuchsGiven I just have this in-built intense sense of anguish and fear whenever I see one. I've been like this since childhood 😪 they always make me feel queasy but can't explain why

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 27/08/2022 20:50

ZeroFuchsGiven · 27/08/2022 20:42

Can I ask WHY everyone is scared of spiders?

Not everyone is. I'd happily remove spiders against you. Any day.

however, I have the intelligence to know that people have phobias of all kinds of things, spiders are one of the most common things people have a phobia of.

don't you ever tire of just being so horrible/goady/sarcastic/belittling on threads? Is there not a site you'd prefer?

Milkywaychocolate · 27/08/2022 20:50

I think for me it's the long, angular legs and how quickly they can move.
