ShockShock

I was folding laundry in my bedroom and this chap fell out, across my wrist and onto the floor.

I'm thinking of ways to catch it safely without hurting its legs. Normally I'd put it in my hands and out the window. Not happening this time!

Does anyone know what type of spider this is?

And did I say, HELP!!!!

I had a large spider in my bedroom the other night but compared to the one my friend sent me a picture of that he found in his garden it was just a baby

I learned on MN a few years back that the spindly, daddy-long-legs-looking spiders capture and kill the big ones. I've left those fellas alone ever since Grin

Ooh. How does that work then? Because the daddy long legs look pretty wimpy next to these thick legged dudes.

Christonabike37 · 28/08/2022 09:57

Just had this monster! Tried to get to out the door but it came for us so I had to smash it with the broom. I hate killing them and usually let them stay but fuck me, those fangs! It could have bit my toddlers arm off!

I too have had one of those where, when it jumped off the window sill, we heard the thud of it landing on the laminate flooring. I can still hear the thud in my head now as I'm typing. Urgh

I've also had one who after I'd glass & carded it outside, I watched it do an immediate full 360 degree turn and walk right back into my house via an air brick. CF.

I think it's the web they make that does the job. They are very strong and sticky, and once the larger spiders get stuck in them, the cellar spiders spin more silk around them. I've seen huge house spiders dead and half eaten in cellar spiders' webs. Amazing.

I bloody love cellar spiders. LOVE them.

Somethingsnappy · 28/08/2022 13:04

Me too!

I love spiders and follow all the subreddits, never kill them etc.. but there is something about these giant house spiders that gives me the willies still 😆 Think it's the size of the legs in relation to the body and the speed, and the dark colour.
I thought when we moved next to a field we'd be overrun with them (not sure why as they are indoor spiders!) but we're not, very rarely see them. But we do have tons of the translucent benign looking cellar spiders which eat them so maybe that's why.

i had the same worry when we moved next to fields/woods and in the first year my fears were realised as we had some absolute monsters.

However after keeping windows shut when lights are on, and letting cellar spiders do their thing, we’ve only had a few house spiders since (and even then, not very big ones)

See those cellar spiders things freak me out more than the big dudes ....
They vibrate in a weird way if you go near them and they also have a bloody annoying tendency to just suddenly drop like some spider SAS on a line of web and dangle just at face height ....

PumpkinPie2016 · 28/08/2022 15:39

Burn the house down.

Or move but don't tell anyone why or no one will move in!!

Less extreme options (if you can!) Large tupperware container and then take it outside about 20 miles away and release.

I'm terrified of spiders and in your shoes, I'd be decamping to a friend/relative.

Thankfully for me, DH can get a glass and move them, as can my dad who only lives a mile away!

Aw come on, they're just trying to be polite and make eye contact....

You all need one of these, you can remove the end to make a larger opening, doesn't hurt them no need to get too close.

I have a word with them whilst in there and tell them my house is not a nightclub or a knocking shop so him and his willy will have to find another place to mate.

Can cope with the spindly ones, several here. Tend to leave them alone. But the 2 inch across black ones, another story. Wondering, cross fingers, touching wood, if spindly ones are deterring them.
Can't help my reaction to the 2 inch ones, especially in only loo/ bathroom.

MarthaChuzzlewhit · 30/08/2022 12:46

If it's a house spider it will die outside. Why not just let it be?
It got to be that size from eating insects it found inside your house!

You're right, but it's my house too and phobia stops me from using loo or showering if not removed. Not a rational thing.

Similar to scary ones here.

Oh she is GORGEOUS!
Spiders are so cute. Have you ever googled spider feet?
Teeny tiny furry little paws 😍

IcakethereforeIam · 30/08/2022 13:12

I hope the link below works. If you're arachnophobia proceed with extreme caution. It's zefrank1 (funniest and informative youtuber) on peacock spiders. They're absolutely teeny tiny and they dance. They narration and music are both very amusing. The spiders are adorable.

All spiders are called Boris.

You do know there are at least 40 more just like him inside your house, right?

Imagine if we killed everything that we thought was ugly and/or that we were afraid of…

My mum used to say, the spider is a lot more scared of you than you are of him!

userxx · 30/08/2022 22:59

@MarthaChuzzlewhit We had a massive spider living in our kitchen in the late 1970's, he was called Boris.

Just remembered.... my last house the boiler was in the attic . It went in the fritz 7 times in 2 years. Every time I had to go up in the attic to read the error code .
Bloody attic was full of cellar spiders. It was like negotiating my way through a crack team of sas abseiling 8 legged critters.

In the end I went up there in a furry hat , rubber gloves and a cagoule . There was always one sat right in front of the boiler . And as soon as I opened the attic trap door they'd start abseiling down ....fucking things . Last time I had to go in there was the height of summer in my furry hat cagoule and rubber gloves , and goggles . Nearly died of heart exhaustion. If I had I bet they'd have feasted on my lifeless body for weeks and got fat .

Gimme a house spider anyday . At least they have the decency to run away . Those bloody cellar things are sinister. Lurky lurky spiders I call em .

It’s a mature male giant house spider (Eratigena sp.). You can tell the males from the females by the pedipalps (little front legs). He has emboli on his pedipalps to store sperm. Females don’t have this.
He will be fine outside, despite being called ‘house spiders’ they do fine outside. We have them in our shed, under the decking, and in various nooks and crannies around the garden!

Why do you know this lol im absolutely terrified of them
