ShockShock

I was folding laundry in my bedroom and this chap fell out, across my wrist and onto the floor.

I'm thinking of ways to catch it safely without hurting its legs. Normally I'd put it in my hands and out the window. Not happening this time!

Does anyone know what type of spider this is?

And did I say, HELP!!!!

Be as scared as you like, you don't pass it on. I like spiders and have never been scared to catch one and put it outside, my son and daughter are absolutely terrified of them, and they're adults.

WildFlowerBees · 27/08/2022 20:26

House spiders die once put outside, it'll need its own room, hope you've had a good chat about rules and expectations.

And where there are females ...

Be scared. Be very scared.

SweetPetrichor · 27/08/2022 20:29

It’s a mature male giant house spider (Eratigena sp.). You can tell the males from the females by the pedipalps (little front legs). He has emboli on his pedipalps to store sperm. Females don’t have this.
He will be fine outside, despite being called ‘house spiders’ they do fine outside. We have them in our shed, under the decking, and in various nooks and crannies around the garden!

I once threw my own phone across a desk showing someone a pic on my phone and a spider pic popped up.

I know it's irrational. I know they won't hurt me. I'm not at the point where I need a trigger warning but sone people may be. It's horrible being so scared. For no real reason.

shinyhappybananaboat · 27/08/2022 20:31

Oh god! I found one not about the same size in my bedroom this week. I have to admit I clobbered him with a shoe and hoovered him up. That's pretty much why I do with Amy creature I haven't invited to live in my house.🤷🏼‍♀️

OliviaBond · 27/08/2022 20:31

I had one the other day. I went to hoover up a dead moth I'd spotted the night before and it had disappeared, guessing the spider ate it! Told DH there was a beast of a spider behind the bookcase. When he saw it 'you didn't tell me it was THAT big'. I mean I literally said it was a beast! Made Dh catch it, I'm usually happy too, but those buggers run fast and I wasn't sure I had a glass big enough 😂

Americano75 · 27/08/2022 20:32

Me after I spot this fucking beast.

A rolled up newspaper and it won't come back 👍

Don't be mean to the spider.

Skodacool · 27/08/2022 20:33

Aaah, bless!

DIanaRiggFan · 27/08/2022 20:33

I’d move fucking country

I had one mahoosive one like that years ago when I lived in a flat with a paper lightshade. It actually woke me up from the sound of it's 'footsteps'

I got a pint glass and it wouldn't fit. I gently teased it in with paper and tipped it over the outside landing into the stairwell below. I heard it fookin land. It was an absolute unit.

I had the same experience with one in a gift bag. I heard it before I saw it. I mean how??? Do they wear steel capped spider shoes ? 😂

Kindofcrunchy · 27/08/2022 20:34

I love spiders. They scare the bejesus out of me but they also eat the moths, flies and other pest insects we get in the house. So we let them cohabit and give me a little fright every now and again 😁

Thanks not harming it btw. So many people just go straight for the newspaper or slipper without a second thought. :(

TallTrees78 · 27/08/2022 20:34

What a huge hairy bastard!

Dalaidramailama · 27/08/2022 20:35

I hallucinate spiders when I’m stressed. Looks fucking awful.

thenewduchessoflapland · 27/08/2022 20:35

That eight legged biatch needs some Immac, the hair on those pins.

Please don't.

Americano75 · 27/08/2022 20:36

I mean, you can't hit that thing. You'd need a fucking mallet for a start, and the mess would be massive.

Mrsphilmiller · 27/08/2022 20:37

OP could you please put a coke can next to him so we can see his size in comparison. I can’t tell otherwise.

Why be sacred? whats it going to do realistically, and Females are way bigger than males!

Lookingforbargains · 27/08/2022 20:37

I’m really jealous of people who can actually deal with these things. Being arachnophobic is pretty grim and inconvenient.

Tell me that's not actually true 🥲

CaptainFlubby · 27/08/2022 20:37

Just so you know, entirely harmless and very good at keeping flies out. We have one in the bathroom. Every now and again there is a flurry of babies in the bath that I have to catch and let go on the floor. They all disperse around the house. They pop up every no and again, eating all the flies and keeping my house fly free!
Love them, such useful beasties 🥰

ScrambledSmegs · 27/08/2022 20:39

We have loads of these. We have an old house with loads of nooks and crannies that arachnids love. DD2 names them which gets a touch confusing as it's usually Bernard.

I'm quite happy to live with spiders, as long as they eat the daddy long-legs. I bloody hate those fuckers.
