ShockShock

I was folding laundry in my bedroom and this chap fell out, across my wrist and onto the floor.

I'm thinking of ways to catch it safely without hurting its legs. Normally I'd put it in my hands and out the window. Not happening this time!

Does anyone know what type of spider this is?

And did I say, HELP!!!!

I saw one this big in my kitchen once sadly for the spider im a reactive aracnaphobic which meant that I threw the washing basket at it and leapt into the air I landed on the part of the washing machine that stuck out (about two inches) with my feet in the sink not my finest hour (usually I would try to remove them) these days I cultivate celler spiders they keep the others away

Eddielizzard · 27/08/2022 21:31

We've got loads of these living in our house. They hide during the day and wander about at night. We give them names: Kevin, Jeff, Ermintraut, Giselda etc. Love them

Marmite17 · 27/08/2022 21:33

Threw a towel over last one and stamped on it. Cautiously approached several minutes later to check on and remove remains.

House spiders die once put outside, it'll need its own room, hope you've had a good chat about rules and expectations.

What are we meant to do with the fuckers then? I don't invite them in, but I don't want them to die much

If they fit under a pint glass I can deal with them. My late Dad refused to deal with spiders when we were kids so we had to learn how to handle them. If it looks like I'll trap its legs with the large glass casserole dish then I do get a bit wobbly.

TheNinny · 27/08/2022 21:36

Cup/Pyrex jug and a piece of paper. Put cup over it and slide the paper under it. They just sort of go onto it. Then out the window/door

NorthernChinchilla · 27/08/2022 21:39

We found what we thought was a false widow in my daughter's bedroom this week...

I was shaking and internally freaking out so much doing this once (struggling to open the window) that I threw the whole lot - paper, spider, pint glass out of the window. Poor thing - I hope it didn't cut its feet on the glass - a high risk if you have EIGHT of them.

Floogal · 27/08/2022 21:47

Pretty sure that's a cardinal spider.

So this thread now needs a trigger warning? jesus wept Ive seen it all now.

But people are so 'sensitive' aren't they, why should a TV programme like Midsomer Murders warn about violence? You're choosing to watch a murder programme! People need to keep a cushion handy if they're so 'sensitve'!

Dalaidramailama · 27/08/2022 21:47

@Marmite17

😂😂 Reminds me of when I splattered one with an old slipper on the wall. There was that much debris I had to paint over it.

TheTeddyBears · 27/08/2022 21:48

I had one exactly like this last week. Pint glass wasn't big enough for the legs but put it over it caught on one of the legs and my dh had to fix it to release the poor things legs. I then got a bit of thick paper coz that's all we cld fine. Put it under and then tried to get my hand under the paper! I was so brave lol then tipped it in the glass and flung it outside it's probably already made it's way bk in 😂

CaptHolt · 27/08/2022 21:48

Holy shit !! I had one of the bastards ( similar size to OP's) in a cupboard taking a nap in a cup , the other day
I almost died & went to heaven
DH got rid of it & I got rid of the cup

Cannot cope with them at all 😢

PeloAddict · 27/08/2022 21:50

I found one like that, on the stairs. It was so big I could see it glaring at me
Got the neighbour who laughed a lot and then went "Jesus Christ, we need a bigger container"

Wow that’s a big one.

Heres a photo of my pet spider. He’s called Artemis though we’ve shortened it down to Artie since we discovered he was male

I am terrified of spiders but those chaps are actually sort of, ever so slightly cute. I mean, I wouldn't have one as a pet but I've seen the Tik toks of their owners giving them a little fly treat and such.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 27/08/2022 20:42

Can I ask WHY everyone is scared of spiders?

Because some spiders, like the woodlice spider, can bite and it effing well hurts, no it won't kill me, but nor do I want to get bitten, just as I don't want to get stung by a hornet or wasp. Nor do I want to get bitten by an adder. Or by mosquitoes for that matter. I am not phobic, but I understand others can be, and in some countries it's sensible to have a bit of fear over something which could kill you!

LimboLass · 27/08/2022 21:55

Omg Pyrex jug

Pyrex jug? More like a bloody AK47!

Jamaisy82 · 27/08/2022 21:58

I hate spiders expecially the huge house spiders like that one. I don't k

I had one mahoosive one like that years ago when I lived in a flat with a paper lightshade. It actually woke me up from the sound of it's 'footsteps'

I got a pint glass and it wouldn't fit. I gently teased it in with paper and tipped it over the outside landing into the stairwell below. I heard it fookin land. It was an absolute unit.

Ah yeah, done the same, it's bad when you can hear them drop. And same as you, it's legs didn't fit in the pint glass. I couldn't believe it.

DH bought a spider catcher, I quite like that. It's like a grabbing brush on the end of a stick which grabs them without harming them. You can just take them outside and let them go (where they no doubt decide their first plan is to come back inside)

Pyrex jug?! But there'd be an esape route at the upturned spout - no thankyou! I'd want the Alcatraz of spider-catching cups.....

Itstrueiagree · 27/08/2022 22:05

You should've named it Arnie too OP as he'll be back! Prob at the end of the garden right now saying "oh ffs not again now I walk all the way back"
Another here who heard and then saw one emerge from a carrier bag. So noisy it woke me up! Huge it was! That'll teach me to not put my new clothes straight in the wardrobe. 🙂

Just so you know, entirely harmless and very good at keeping flies out. We have one in the bathroom. Every now and again there is a flurry of babies in the bath that I have to catch and let go on the floor. They all disperse around the house. They pop up every no and again, eating all the flies and keeping my house fly free!
Love them, such useful beasties 🥰

Er.....is there any particular reason your house is full of flies? Do you live on a farm?

Teenagehorrorbag · 27/08/2022 22:09

It's one of those you usually find in the bath....Grin. They don't bite, unlike some of the smaller ones that climb your walls. You should try to pick it up so your children don't get scared - but if you really can't then yes, a cup and a bit of cardboard will do the job for you.

We had one lived for months behind the drawers in our sitting room. It only appeared late at night so we left it alone - but it did die eventually. Poor Harry! (Harriet....).
