To think some Mumsnet advice is crap?

Lighthearted.

Lots of very good suggestions, kindness, support, not knocking anyone, just having a laugh here.

But there are a few tired old nuggets that keep finding their way onto threads.

Theres the super aggressive, over the top advice, like someone who is mildly annoyed with their husband has to SIT HIM DOWN. why does this always involve sitting him down, like a dog.

Ear plus or headphones as the answer to any excess noise. Does it not occur to people that we need to hear other stuff for a reason?

No, as in no is a complete sentence. No it isnt. I think my friend is a MNetter, I asked if she was free for coffee a couple of months ago. She said ‘no.’ I haven’t asked since!

what’s the worst advice you’ve seen on here?

OP posts:

Yeah i have seen this on legal ( I have no legal knowledge myself so have no place being on it i just find it interesting) there are couple of posters who have a legal background who regularly give advice particularly on child arrangements but other posters stick their two pennorth in and often the Op ignores the actual solicitor because they prefer the " advice" of others with no knowledge just their idea of what they think should happen.

Yeah I've seen this on many topics. The worst is when you can quite easily confirm the basic information if you google it so you know the person is or isn't bullshitting.

Allthegoodnamesaregoneffs · 30/08/2022 17:02

I've got it at the moment, trying to help someone as I have good knowledge about the subject, yet others are chiming in with what they "think" are the definitions of things and it's serving nothing more than to worry the op.

Cheap holiday = camping. Camping is shit (for some) and can be expensive. Plus you really need a car.

And you need all the equipment which can cost £££,s

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 30/08/2022 22:20

The thread currently running about a husband being expected to take in his ex-wife’s dog is a perfect example of crap advice. So many comments saying ‘Try to find a way to make it work’, but with no suggestions on how to do that, when the OP has already listed several reasons why it won’t work!

Absolutely!

However, I have had some wonderful advice by clearly very knowledgeable MNers, specifically in relation to my abusive 'D'M, which has changed my life.

It can be difficult to sort the wheat from the chaff but, after years on MN, you get used to it.

The 'no is a complete sentence' brigade really frustrate me. Who speaks like this to fellow humans in real life?

Or, 'but your child is 18, they're an adult and you're controlling to want to be involved in their life' Give me a break!

And of course, LTB. Need I go on 😂😂

Some people really need to cut the apron strings though. You're can't control every aspect of your adult child's life!

StopStartStop · 27/08/2022 11:10

It's perfectly ok to but your teenage son and daughter in a bedroom together every night for a fortnight. Because sexual abuse never happens in families and young people aren't entitled to privacy.

Oh it's you again still harping on about that...

GettingStuffed · 30/08/2022 22:33

The suggestion that if anyone over 50 does something disagreeable is that they may have dementia.

HintofVintagePink · 30/08/2022 22:49

Half baked legal advice from people who think ‘they’ know what they are talking about.

x2boys · 01/09/2022 09:49

All the hysterical threads throughout the pandemic, and I mean from both sides ,the pandemic what pandemic posters ,and the ww are all doomed posters were as bad as each other ,it was hard to get balanced views. I'm seeing the same with the cost of living crisis atm.

TartanGirl1 · 01/09/2022 10:11

SuperCamp · 27/08/2022 11:00

All the wild and wonderful suggestions that avoid actually talking to someone to explain the issue.

Just put up a fence! (£600 minimum)
Get bollards! (Everyone wants to get out and unlock bollards returning from work in a dark Feb night)
Slash their tyres! (ASBO pending
Get a neighbour to dress up as a traffic warden and put a fake ticket on their car (yes neighbour has nothing better to do, obv)
etc etc

Also: ‘take bubbles’ to entertain kids on a campsite. NO! Do not! Everyone will hate you. Detergent is the enemy of waterproofing.

I are the suggestion today that someone just needs to get a bigger house, simples... 🤯

NewDiary · 01/09/2022 10:48

On present ideas threads (e.g on the Christmas board) people sometimes ask for present suggestions for a child and list the things they already have, to save people wasting their time suggesting them.

Unhelpful advice- "It sounds like they already have more than a lot of children do, so I wouldn't get them anything at all".

Merry Christmas, everybody!

Those threads are crazy competitive.

"I'm super rich but got my kid a book and an orange and he was delighted"

"A book AND an orange, my kid got a segment of an orange, even though we are millionares, your kid is clearly spoiled"

"A segment of an orange? I actually took stuff away from my kid for christmas and he thanked me through tears of gratitude, we have a few billion in the bank so could afford anything we want, but decided not to"

🙄 sure. In reality their kid had a selection box for christmas breakfast and opened a load of shit they won't play with a week later, like the majority of the population.

Yeah those threads are terrible, they also like to sneer at the common folk who like to treat their kids at Xmas as they can't afford during the year
"All that plastic tat why won't people think of the environment, "now I'm just going to book my three week cruise in the caribbean, for new year ,and we will have a "cheap holiday " two Spain for two weeks all inclusive ,for Easter ,and then book a "main" holiday travelling north America for the summer, and maybe a skiing holiday in October half term ,but it's all justifie as holidays are very important to them 🙄
