To say people posting pics of their fuel bills need to stop

QuandaleDingle · 26/08/2022 19:30

I’ve decided that all the people posting screen shots of their energy bills on social media can fuck off !!!

IMO they are as bad as the ones all posting pictures of empty shelves at the beginning of covid / lockdown. and then of petrol stations that had ran out this time last year.

I get that people are worried and scared. I am too. However my bills are my private business and I will deal with them myself. And while it may be that their estimated bills are correct - to just post them up on socials for all to see when everyone is worrying with no real context, just these massive figures is out of order. It is just scaremongering for the sake of it (as everyones is going to be different due to their usage, their house size and house age, amount of people, how good their insulation is etc) so it is causing people even more mass panic and upset and for what end ???

I would just remind anyone sharing bills online to block out full name / address / account number / any bank details, to avoid the risk of identity theft. Otherwise people are free to share what they wish on social media, provided it doesn’t breach guidelines for that platform. And you’re free to unfollow if it bothers you. (It isn’t something I would personally do, but each of their own.)

All the ones I've seen have all their info for all to see 🤦‍♀️

some people here have no idea!!!! beyond help

I’m not the one who stole from my employer while lecturing others on how to save money.

I honestly feel we’re on the brink of a revolution. It’s absolutely insane that professional couples on full-time salaries are worrying about bills - so I think YABU. The more people who say ‘this is absolutely fucking ridiculous’, the better.

Hear, hear!

YABU OP. Bill have gone up over 100% for many people year on year. Think about that.

@oiltrader and @Pumperthepumper could you maybe take this argument elsewhere? It's getting annoying now.

fruitbrewhaha · 26/08/2022 22:33

We should be rioting!

I totally agree

Rioting. Not attention seeking and catastrophising on the internet

Jealous of your second hand christmas present heat source and stealing your employer’s tv? No, I could afford those things myself.

Friars23 · 26/08/2022 22:40

To the few on here saying it’s hysteria/cut your cloth accordingly, how ignorant can you be? For anyone not on a fixed tariff arranged a while back an 80% increase on the unit rate is going to massively increase people’s bills. I think read half of U.K. are not on fixed. People will cut down energy use but even so it’s a lot of money each month that now has to be budgeted for and for a fair few it’s going to be impossible. Not to mention the effect it will have on small businesses. Recession is inevitable.

It’s massively irresponsible of the govt to have not announced yet any plans to help. I am sure they will eventually but it will be causing a lot of anxiety for many. What Truss has indicated she will do, tax cuts, will not help the majority. She also suggests she will cut the green levy. In reality this is just a small amount, about £100-150 annually. And as we are already experiencing climate change the govt should be focusing on accelerating a move to more renewable energy not suggesting cutting funding for the move to switching all energy to renewable energy.

If people want to share their bills, let them. The people need to be demanding government come up with an action plan for both the short and long term. This isn’t going away.

I already had my thermostat set at 19 degrees every winter.“

wow. We’re on a good income, have to set ours at 16.

honestly have no idea how the hell people are going to get by this winter.

MoistBandana · 26/08/2022 23:04

Last winter, we couldn't afford heating the house at all and left the heating off.

What we did was live in our bedrooms.
We had duvets and blankets and wore fleeces. An electric blanket put.on for 5 minutes warms the bed and stays warm for a good while after.

The worst bits was showering though. The bathroom was cold, quick shower and dry and hop back into bed to warm up.
Have soups for tea as well, nice hot soups and bread to fill up.

It's not a cheerful existence tbh. I can see millions of people suddenly living this way though. It's likely that a lot of of them have never had to live this way before, it'll be a massive shock to them. But it's how the millions of the poorest of society have had to get through the years of Tory austerity.

AprilRae91 · 26/08/2022 23:07

@Pumperthepumper completely agree. All we do is work and we’re worried about affording food and keeping the baby warm enough

@Pumperthepumper

It’s not anger, it’s mocking. You are so ignorant about modern life and you’re not even ashamed of it.

In defense of that poster: many people aren't going to be able to afford modern life anymore. So thinking about alternatives might not be a dumb idea. If you can't afford sky then you simply can't have it. The choice is then to fuck up your childrens life by sitting depressed at home looking at your bills and crying and being a miserable parent or trying to make something of it and play board games and borrow library books while wearing fake primark oodies. I know which childhood I'd rather have. The choice is gone for many people, alternatives need to be found and plenty of older people did have a nice childhood without modern things.

Honestly telling normal everyday working people to get rid of mobile phones and not to have any treats at all so they can put the heating on, all whilst we are one of the richest countries in the world and have 177 billionaires is just downright depressing. Almost unbelievable

I never thought that something like this would happen. It feels like going back in time, doesn't it.

LouLou198 · 27/08/2022 06:38

"get rid of sky tv, mobiles, learn to cook. stop buying non essentials like alcohol, take aways, cigarettes etc. no need for new clothes"

We don't have sky tv, I always cook from scratch apart from on pay day when we have a take away. I rarely drink and don't smoke. I don't often buy myself new clothes unless really needed but unfortunately my dc won't stop growing. We both work but an 80% increase in our bill is going to have a massive effect on us. I have always been quiet frugal, and we sat down yesterday to see what we could cut back on but apart from the odd cinema trip/cake & coffee out we only spend on the essentials. I am really worried.

It's been happening in this country for years TBF.
Heat or eat is nothing new.
People being cold and hungry is nothing new.
People going to the local library because they can't afford heat at home is nothing new.
It was once restricted to the poor, unemployed, sick and disabled, now it's just spreading.
It's a shame nothing was done when it was only affecting the broken, but it was easy for the majority to ignore it then.. even though the winter of 2017 saw 50000 excess deaths for the period..

Oh ok. Wish I had thought about that.

It's predicted that our energy bill will be more than our rent in January. More than 5 x than it was last January. It really isn't about cutting your cloth to suit. I honestly don't know how we will afford it. Certainly no heating. Limit time lights are on. Limit the time the oven etc is used.

We aren't low earners (certainly not high earners) our wages should (and have done) cover basic bills. I shouldn't have to be worrying about how we will pay our energy bills.

Agree meanwhile the scummy corrupt in power get away with everything

tigger1001 · 27/08/2022 16:42

"get rid of sky tv, mobiles, learn to cook. stop buying non essentials like alcohol, take aways, cigarettes etc. no need for new clothes

What happens when there's nothing left to cut?

The last thing I can do to reduce my costs is get rid of my car, but then I wouldn't be able to get to work (and before you say "just use public transport!!1!", there's none that goes anywhere near. Here's a pic of my commute

It's a fucking disgrace that people are going to struggle and possibly die when the companies are raking in such massive profits."

I agree. It's easy for people to say cut back but when people are already feeling the pinch there isn't much left to cut back.

And that then causes further problems as the government need people to be spending money on luxuries. They need people to have disposable income.

I need my car - it's not a luxury. It's how I get to work. No car , no job.

Public transport is already a nightmare here, with huge reductions to the timetable proposed for the coming months. Very few will be able to rely on it for work, certainly if you don't work 9-5. And none on a Sunday. Fantastic for shift workers....

No, Oiltrader used to be a stripper, which on a previous thread they claimed was good money. They didn’t mention the handed down Christmas present or not being able to afford a tv on that thread, strangely enough.
