To say people posting pics of their fuel bills need to stop

I’ve decided that all the people posting screen shots of their energy bills on social media can fuck off !!!

IMO they are as bad as the ones all posting pictures of empty shelves at the beginning of covid / lockdown. and then of petrol stations that had ran out this time last year.

I get that people are worried and scared. I am too. However my bills are my private business and I will deal with them myself. And while it may be that their estimated bills are correct - to just post them up on socials for all to see when everyone is worrying with no real context, just these massive figures is out of order. It is just scaremongering for the sake of it (as everyones is going to be different due to their usage, their house size and house age, amount of people, how good their insulation is etc) so it is causing people even more mass panic and upset and for what end ???

they do own it. no land, just the garden the house is on. Mum was a stay at home mum, so no pension only state one now

why such anger at me?

So your parents were so wealthy they could raise children with one salary and include treats for them?

It’s not anger, it’s mocking. You are so ignorant about modern life and you’re not even ashamed of it.

get rid of sky tv, mobiles, learn to cook. stop buying non essentials like alcohol, take aways, cigarettes etc. no need for new clothes

What happens when there's nothing left to cut?

The last thing I can do to reduce my costs is get rid of my car, but then I wouldn't be able to get to work (and before you say "just use public transport!!1!", there's none that goes anywhere near. Here's a pic of my commute

It's a fucking disgrace that people are going to struggle and possibly die when the companies are raking in such massive profits.

So are all energy bills ok to post online?

We’re all familiar with mn, this is the place where if someone posts about having a toccic and abusive parent someone will chime in that they should feel grateful that they have a parent because poster’s parent is dead and they’d give anything to have them back.

I 100% guarantee that the only people who will be allowed to say anything about their energy bills will be those who are paying 5/6/£700. If someone posts that their direct debit is e.g. £200 a month they will be flamed to hell and back and be told they’re insensitive.

So it might be worth knowing who will be permitted to be upset about their energy bill and who should shut the fuck up for fear of offending people.

Oldrockingchair · 26/08/2022 21:14

We have no sky, don’t drink, no takeaways, need 2 cars for work (no public transport), buy all clothes etc on eBay/charity shops/Vinted. Cars are from 2008. Where do you propose we cut back?

Pumperthepumper · 26/08/2022 21:15

I think a lot of people think the poor have to be completely devoid of any joy or comfort in their lives before they’re allowed to complain. It’s absolutely fucking outrageous that we’re in this position as a wealthy country in 2022. We have consistently voted to make things harder for our population for years and it’s absolutely ridiculous that some people still see fucking sky tv the reason people can’t feed their children.

when did i say treats? my first holiday abroad was in my 20s

we never had sweets, only at easter and xmas. and we got a portion of chips to share if we went to the beach

ouch321 · 26/08/2022 21:16

Agree - there's been so many threads on this topic over the past fortnight, it was the same with the U-R war outbreak a few months ago when people kept asking if they should flee to the airport then and there just in case they were called up to the UK army and whatnot.

And none of these threads are adding any new information, they're just churning out the same old 'I'm worried, I'm going to buy some extra blankets' type spiel. There's no need to start a hundred almost identical threads. The advice is the same for everyone.

People here just revel in creating panic.

that looks idyllic. reminds me of my childhood

I'm very glad I don't know anyone who is doing this. It's a really weird thing to do.

Your mum bought you an electric blanket. You should have done without that towards your bills.

Walkden · 26/08/2022 21:18

"I just think the posting pics of bills is unhelpful and unnecessary and adds to the panic in the same way as the covid panickers"

People were worried about covid because there was no way to tell if you would be the unlucky few. Most people thought this was an overreaction given 99% percent would be fine.

Fuel buying made people worry about filling up the cars and ironically made this more likely

Neither of these are comparable to the energy crisis because we know that anyone not on a fix will be paying 3 times what they did last year and nearly five times in January. No one is going to rush out and buy more energy and make it worse are they.

Th thing that would help Is the government letting us know what action they propose to take. No amount of cutting TV channels, husk Ng mobile n front of candles and batch cooking is going to cut 80% of your energy use to compensate for the price increases heading our way on top of what has already happened.

It's no really scaremongering when people are facing hundreds of pounds extra on their bills per month. Hopefully people will put pressure on the government because it's unsustainable for the majority of the country.

RewildingAmbridge · 26/08/2022 21:20

Are you worried people will start panic buying and stockpiling gas and electricity.......?

coodawoodashooda · 26/08/2022 21:20

Pumperthepumper · 26/08/2022 19:44

I honestly feel we’re on the brink of a revolution. It’s absolutely insane that professional couples on full-time salaries are worrying about bills - so I think YABU. The more people who say ‘this is absolutely fucking ridiculous’, the better.

Im not on social media so not seeing this but I think the biggest issue about this whole thing is that people dont understand what all the figures mean

Bandying around prices per month are meaningless.

Personally Im going hardcore, no heating this winter.

i could afford it. it was cheaper than having to use a fan heater. my work in the evenings paid for it. i LIVED WITHIN MY MEANS

No you didn’t, your mum had to supplement you.

Another middle class poster asking us working class to keep quiet whilst we drown!

Pumperthepumper · 26/08/2022 20:03

What pragmatic things are you doing to ensure 90% of your salary isn’t going to utilities?

Where has 90% come from?

I had my boiler serviced today, I asked the engineer what could be done to economise fuel costs with our boiler, gave him the go-ahead with his suggestion.

We will turn down the bedroom radiators to 2 (off may invite damp).

We will turn the central thermostat down to 19 between 8am and 11pm. Wr will turn it down further if the bill generated is too high.

We will use the oven as little as possible, and if we need to use it we will batch cook while it's on.

The slow cooker is going to be massively used.

The tumble dryer will be dusted.

We will shower every other day, wash bedding once a month. Towels same.

If I feel cold I won't just sit feeling cold, I can get up and do something or even go for a walk.

What about your plans?

Still, you could have done without it and saved on the electricity costs and parental support. Were you still drawing for entertainment at this point or did you have a TV by then?
