To say people posting pics of their fuel bills need to stop

I’ve decided that all the people posting screen shots of their energy bills on social media can fuck off !!!

IMO they are as bad as the ones all posting pictures of empty shelves at the beginning of covid / lockdown. and then of petrol stations that had ran out this time last year.

I get that people are worried and scared. I am too. However my bills are my private business and I will deal with them myself. And while it may be that their estimated bills are correct - to just post them up on socials for all to see when everyone is worrying with no real context, just these massive figures is out of order. It is just scaremongering for the sake of it (as everyones is going to be different due to their usage, their house size and house age, amount of people, how good their insulation is etc) so it is causing people even more mass panic and upset and for what end ???

Not seen it, but it's ridiculous. Absolutely nobody needs to know this stuff. And the media needs to stop making such a fuss too, but they just love a bit of unnecessary drama!

Manekinek0 · 26/08/2022 20:05

Just get off social media! The amount of posts bitching about Facebook is unreasonable. No one forces you to use it, just delete your account.

I haven’t seen any but wouldn’t be at all angry or upset if I did. They’re literally in blank and white, it’s not scare mongering, it’s their actual bill.

You seem more angry about people doing this than you are about the whole nation being fucked sideways by corporate greed and political incompetence. I’d spend some time looking into why you think that is.

100% this!

People dying from respiratory conditions, malnutrition and hypothermia this winter - that sort of unnecessary drama? Ffs.

Amipreg1 · 26/08/2022 20:16

Don't look then. Their bills are their problem (just like yours) and they can do what they like with them.

safetyfreak · 26/08/2022 20:18

Oh go away.

This is not the time to, 'just get on with it'

Have another....

drkpl · 26/08/2022 20:23

Dp and I will be on two full time salaries by September but we will have to turn our heating off this winter. If we don’t shout about it then what is going to be done? People are going to suffer.

People need to cut their cloth to suit. too many living lifestyles beyond their means on credit. the piper needs to be paid. People just need to accept it and move on

Touga · 26/08/2022 20:29

YABVU

How is it scaremongering if these are actual real bills causing real hardship and stress in real life and its actually happening right now??

I'm not a fan of social media and the selfie fascination, posting absolutely every last second of life online. But in these circumstances, I'm onboard with us all sharing the obscene bills in protest, to garner enough rage for a revolution.

I can't understand why anyone would be more upset at people posting proof of their hardship than the fact they are suffering hardship. It smacks of "your poverty offends me, I want to live in ignorant bliss because hardship has not reached me yet. Do bore off with your depressing life, I'm trying to enjoy my overpriced moccafrappaccino I splurged on in this hipster coffee shop in a trendy part of town!"

Tory voter by any chance OP?

Laiste · 26/08/2022 20:31

PP upthread says it causes 'panic'. What would actual panicing about this look like? Running about with a bill in your hand screaming?

Facing facts, worrying and sharing the worry with folks in the same boat is natural and a healthy approach right now.

StaunchMomma · 26/08/2022 20:31

Every example you gave is one of panic buying.

How does that relate to energy bills?!!

You're being incredibly precious. If anyone wants to post anything about their own life they are perfectly entitled to AND it's literally none of your business!!

Also, you can't fear monger with facts!!

the80sweregreat · 26/08/2022 20:32

I often think mumsnet is a bit like an online ' agony aunt ' and many people don't have anyone to talk to or just need to discuss it and you can get some very good advice and facts on this forum
If people want to vent or just show their bills then why not ? It is a worrying time and the rolling news on tv just makes matters worse too
I'm just sorry that many people are going to suffer hardship because of these huge rises and maybe being on here helps a bit ?

GhostFromTheOtherSide · 26/08/2022 20:32

It’s competitive hysteria.

Yes, some people are estimated to have high fuel bills, and when they post them on social media they will gain sympathy. But as soon as someone posts a bill which isn’t as high as Fred’s round the corner people will start branding them insensitive for daring to post a lower bill when other people are going to be paying more etc etc etc.

And pragmatic is being aware of what your actual usage is, rather than accepting the energy companies’ demand for an over-estimated direct debit.

Many of the energy companies are sending out estimates which are way over the price cap so are not accurate in the slightest but have certainly managed to scare people.

Sparklingbrook · 26/08/2022 20:45

I don't know why anyone needs to see your actual bill.

antelopevalley · 26/08/2022 20:47

I find people getting angry about this kind of thing are not those with serious worries about energy bills.

@GhostFromTheOtherSide you do realise that fuel bills are going up by 80% in October, don't you?

Many people have already made big cut backs in fuel consumption due to the last two hikes. There may not be anything left to cut.

Over 50% of households will be in fuel poverty.

Inflation is going to be rather interesting in an undesirable way.

oiltrader · 26/08/2022 20:49

Pumperthepumper · 26/08/2022 20:28

And how do they do that?

get rid of sky tv, mobiles, learn to cook. stop buying non essentials like alcohol, take aways, cigarettes etc. no need for new clothes

Everyone I know uses a smartmeter so they are not hysterical. They are shocked at their current energy cost when we have a very warm winter.

I feel calm until I see stupid comments like this.
Always I assume by rich people well insulated in their ignorance.
