To say people posting pics of their fuel bills need to stop

I’ve decided that all the people posting screen shots of their energy bills on social media can fuck off !!!

IMO they are as bad as the ones all posting pictures of empty shelves at the beginning of covid / lockdown. and then of petrol stations that had ran out this time last year.

I get that people are worried and scared. I am too. However my bills are my private business and I will deal with them myself. And while it may be that their estimated bills are correct - to just post them up on socials for all to see when everyone is worrying with no real context, just these massive figures is out of order. It is just scaremongering for the sake of it (as everyones is going to be different due to their usage, their house size and house age, amount of people, how good their insulation is etc) so it is causing people even more mass panic and upset and for what end ???

In other words "I can afford to pay my bills. I dont want to hear from people who cant. Its uncomfortable"

And when you're paying 90% of your income to keep warm? Will that be OK?

Chasingthefrog · 26/08/2022 21:39

Haven't rtft but if people start discussing how bad the cost of living crisis is going to affect them on a personal level the mainstream media will start reporting the issues that families are *actually facing.

The reality of this situation is heartbreaking and it is going to hit those who are already struggling the hardest.

The more people talk about this, the better imo. Nothing will ever change if we don't stand up for ourselves, we need the government to get the message that things need to be done before some of the most vulnerable members of our society suffer from ^their poor decisions.

Not seen it, but it's ridiculous. Absolutely nobody needs to know this stuff. And the media needs to stop making such a fuss too, but they just love a bit of unnecessary drama!

100% this. ^ The amount of ludicrous, scaremongering threads on here this week (about energy bills.) is farcical. People believing any old shit the media feeds them. You just can't tell them though. They won't have it that it's mostly scaremongeing bollocks that the news channels and bulletins are pushing. As a few posters have said, it was the same with covid and brexit. Histrionic scaremongering. I won't waste my time arguing with them. CBA.

I'm very glad I don't know anyone who is doing this. It's a really weird thing to do.

My fb is rife with it

I've had to hide so many people

Another middle class poster asking us working class to keep quiet whilst we drown!

Middle class 🤣🤣🤣

I'm working class as they come trust me I'm so far from the mn middle class

Have no issue with people being unhappy, I am too. but doing so on social media won't help one bit. Getting out on the streets might though

Where has 90% come from?

I had my boiler serviced today, I asked the engineer what could be done to economise fuel costs with our boiler, gave him the go-ahead with his suggestion.

We will turn down the bedroom radiators to 2 (off may invite damp).

We will turn the central thermostat down to 19 between 8am and 11pm. Wr will turn it down further if the bill generated is too high.

We will use the oven as little as possible, and if we need to use it we will batch cook while it's on.

The slow cooker is going to be massively used.

The tumble dryer will be dusted.

We will shower every other day, wash bedding once a month. Towels same.

If I feel cold I won't just sit feeling cold, I can get up and do something or even go for a walk.

What about your plans?

We dont have the rads on upstairs apart from the bathroom, its not good for you to have rads on in a bedroom

Our thermostat is already 18 or 19 dependent on the weather outside

We dont have a tumbledrier I would never have one

I wash bedding every week and that wont change. I shower every day and that wont change.

You were stealing from your employer! You were watching tv while working!

Libraries and museums are only open for a couple of hours per day these days, should people leave work early to go round for a heat?

oiltrader · 26/08/2022 21:46

we only put the heating on when needed. never leave it on with just the thermostat set.

The apathy I'm seeing about the energy costs is astounding.

Put your fingers in your ears, start chanting "La La La" and pretend it isn't happening. That'll do the trick!

I would expect nothing less from the head girls of Mumsnet to be honest. Hubby with his big important job deals with all that nasty money business anyway *tinkly laugh. They think it's all a lot of fuss about nothing, maybe some poor people will have to turn their heating down a bit and hubby was being awfully mean when he said perhaps they ought to holiday in Cornwall again next year.

Navigatingnewwaters · 26/08/2022 21:50

oiltrader · 26/08/2022 20:49

get rid of sky tv, mobiles, learn to cook. stop buying non essentials like alcohol, take aways, cigarettes etc. no need for new clothes

Get rid of mobiles?? Are you taking the piss

Are you worried people will start panic buying and stockpiling gas and electricity.......?

I'm planning to suck gas out of the hob and blow it into balloons for winter, should see me through I think, figure I can fill up the box room and have a fun feature for the kids to play in as well. Course will have to make sure to keep the curtains closed or everyone'll be doing it.

The electricity is harder, I haven't quite figured out a strategy for that one yet, any ideas?

Navigatingnewwaters · 26/08/2022 21:55

Pumperthepumper · 26/08/2022 21:15

I think a lot of people think the poor have to be completely devoid of any joy or comfort in their lives before they’re allowed to complain. It’s absolutely fucking outrageous that we’re in this position as a wealthy country in 2022. We have consistently voted to make things harder for our population for years and it’s absolutely ridiculous that some people still see fucking sky tv the reason people can’t feed their children.

🙌

tulipfancy · 26/08/2022 21:56

This isn't a conspiracy theory. These aren't fictional numbers. This is a real emergency that is hitting everyone. Good to hear it's being aired! Or would you rather we just sit and cry quietly with the blinds drawn and accept it instead
