To have been on my phone while driving

Okay okay… I know I was being unreasonable but I want to know what might happen next

I was Driving from nursery drop-off to pick up a prescription - turned onto the road where the doctors surgery and pharmacy are located.

I got a call from nursery and answered using hands free in my car but it wasn’t connecting so I picked up my phone from the seat next to me. I spoke to my daughters key worker briefly (around 30 seconds) while driving about 5mph slowly into a car park.

I noticed a man in a parked car (he was parked mounted on the kerb and idling!!!) was very obviously talking to his passenger about me being on the phone while driving and looked like he was taking a photo of me! He was holding his phone up sideways in my direction.

What will happen if he reports me? As I said I know what I did was wrong but he was also breaking the law by sitting there with his engine on!

Do you understand the meaning of “grassing up” @Paul85 or are you just trying to sound edgy? No one on here cares where you claim to come from.

Sorry i dont get your post

Loki64 · 25/08/2022 23:36

Do you have a problem in general?

You should probably read peoples posts properly before commenting on them.

Nowhere in my post did I say one was as bad as the other? You've agreed with my original post, that they are both offences. So what was your original reply to me for? You've agreed with exactly what I posted?

The law is quite straight.
No excuses.

Exactly. Some people think they can just do what they want, and the law should not apply to them!

I know a few people, who think 'grassing someone up' is a bigger crime than stealing, benefit fraud, or driving whilst using your phone. Clearly, you are one those people ... Nuff said. 😎

I would grass you - and anyone else up - in a heartbeat. I don't subscribe to the 'no grassing' bullshit.

The woman was in the wrong but i certainly wouldnt take a vid and hand it to the bizzies.Hopefully she learns her lesson. As i said everyone makes mistakes ..i know ive made plenty.

Pigeon05 · 25/08/2022 23:44

You've had a lapse in judgement. You know you fucked up. Really, he could send it to the police, a FB group, who knows. I don't know what will happen next.

Yes, something could've happened. It didn't. So I don't understand why PPs think you should feel guilty about something that didn't happen. It's quite hard to feel ill with guilt when you didn't cause any hurt or harm. I think if there was someone affected by your actions, you'd obviously feel terrible.

Just move on now and don't do it again.

That's what I thought about @Paul85

Hard because i wouldnt snitch 😂maybe you're just sad?

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 25/08/2022 23:49

Ihaveaquestionn · 25/08/2022 23:16

Yes I was holding a phone but no more distracted than I would have been on hands free!

Taking a call while driving is horrendously dangerous. It is proven to be just as distracting, and therefore dangerous, whether you are ‘hands-free’ or not. Please do not ask why it is still allowable by law. Just because something is not illegal this does not magically make it safe. Don’t be a twat. Save your phone calls for the moments when you’re not in charge of lethal machinery 🙄

What’s all this talk about “snitching” @Paul85 are we in prison or a gang?

If someone deliberately does something that’s an offence and could cause others danger, are we supposed to never speak out or contact the authorise because… we’re all capable of making “mistakes” like deliberately picking up a phone and answering it while driving?

Im sorry but all this snitching and grassing stuff has nothing to do with the OP at hand

Exactly this. @Paul85 talks like a 12 year old boy. Talks about 'snitching and grassing' and 'telling tales to teacher.' So childish and ridiculous. Hmm Grown-ups/sensible adults absolutely would call out, and report anti-social, and law breaking behaviour. I would.

There's a certain unsavoury type in society, who - as I said earlier - consider it worse to 'grass someone up' than to actually break the law. This type of person I actively avoid, and would never have in my social circle.

If she hit a car or a person then i could see why someone would video her but she didnt! If genuine she sounds like shes learned her lesson. As for Jail talk i wouldnt know because ive never been inside. In Liverpool if you talk to the cops youre a grass ..its the way it is here ..sorry if that offends you.

Toosadtocomprehend · 26/08/2022 00:03

Absolutely….idling on a pavement is less likely to kill someone than you on your mobile!! Just own your poor decision,be thankful no one injured and pay the fine!

I've seen loads of people driving on their phone and not once have i raced to get my phone out 😂and btw you wouldnt get in my circle either because you wouldnt be cool enough 😂

JuneJule · 26/08/2022 00:12

Police officer here. Attended several horrific RTCs as a result of someone being on their phone 'only for a few seconds' it's all it takes.

Please don't use your phone while driving.

WhistPie · 26/08/2022 00:13

Still school holidays, I see

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 25/08/2022 23:01

Have you never had a child in nursery? Or a child anywhere? Or a tiny bit of imagination?

Yes. I suspect most of us on this thread have had a child in Nursery, or maybe childminders and certainly school.

I still wouldn't answer my phone when driving.

In fact, there is an argument to say that once you become a parent you are possibly more likely to be cautious about doing something dangerous.

If the phone was ringing, I wouldn't know it was Nursery, but if it was unusual to get a call from anyone, or it was persistent, then I would pull over, and then look at the phone, not answer when driving.

SavoirFlair · 26/08/2022 00:19

If she hit a car or a person then i could see why someone would video her but she didnt

Yeah because it’s only an offence if you actually fell someone or strike them with your car … until then anything goes

Jesus I give up with this thread, it’s just full of self justification and weirdly specific codes of honour

I dont ever use the phone driving and i think the op is feeling worried enough without people getting on her case. There is no code of honour but i dont like the cops.I have my reasons.I dint think im a gangster 😂

ivykaty44 · 26/08/2022 00:25

Police do prosecute on evidence like this, but I reckon most people who take pictures like this never forward them, they are just making a (valid) point.

Motorists are sending 1000's of videos to different police forces across the country every month

then you have the chap in London who regularly catches drivers on his commute and sends in sometimes as many as 6 a morning on the phone whilst driving

ivykaty44 · 26/08/2022 00:34

people don't toot and put their fingers in the air - they just report bad driving

If you thought that was me being impressed I'd question your capacity for comprehension.
